Event Showcase: Fort Amherst

https://www.ghosthuntevents.co.uk/fort-amherst.php

History of Fort Amherst

Fort Amherst in Chatham, Kent was built to protect Chatham Dockyard after the invasion by the Dutch in 1667.

Construction of the fortifications started in 1755. The site chosen included a chalk pit with a number of caves. These caves were extended between 1776 and 1805 to provide an underground labyrinth of tunnels. The tunnels contain many interesting and important features including; a well, privies, loopholed defences, cannon positions and defendable gateways.

In 1820 the defences were declared obsolete due to better artillery equipment with a greater firing range. The whole of the fortifications were used as a training ground during the Victorian period.

During WWII the tunnels were utilised by the Anti-Invasion Planning Unit and Civil Defence, who used a section as their headquarters. This is where Civil Defence was coordinated for the North Kent.

Ghost Hunting

We have been investigating #FortAmherst since December 2014 and we have had lots of very good nights with loads of paranormal occurrences. Lots of good evidence has been witnessed, not necessarily recorded but our guests have had some amazing personal evidence.

We have also heard disembodied whispers, voices, coughs, whistles and spoken sentences, some of which have been recorded, but the best evidence is never recorded and when it happens to a guest they either can’t explain what happened or don’t believe what they just witnessed. Fort Amherst is one of those places where the evidence has to be witnessed.

Our favourite areas are; The Upper Gun floor for all activities especially table tilting and séances, the Civil Defense rooms for EVP’s, tech & gadgets

You can watch our evidence at https://youtu.be/c5Gu_bqXIbQ?list=PLqWQMrZeI7VR61H-eGQNs2ssITzXng4CR

Fort Amherst ghost hunt 20th May 2016
Chatham, Kent

fort-amherst-1

Area: Upper Gun Floor

Ouija & Table Tipping, Dowsing Rods, Pendulums & Human Pendulum
We started with half the group on Ouija, and the other half on Table Tipping.  We had slight movement on both.  We then tried the Human Pendulum and had the spirit of a male soldier step forward.  He had passed in his 20’s from a head injury.  His wife was also with us.  One of the guests had his name as Archibald.  He had murdered someone, for stealing his money.  He was happily married, who then stepped forward, her name was Elizabeth.  We did try the table tipping again and had a lot of rocking but no more.  We then used the dowsing rods & pendulums, and guests enjoyed exploring and communicating with the spirits.

With my second group again we started with table tipping and had some rocking, one more than another with a lot of spins, rocking and walking across the room to where the spirit was standing, after hearing noises from that area.  We then all tried the very large table and was able to get a lot of movement, rocking rapidly, tipping up and holding to one side when asked.  Two guests at one end of the table both had blowing in their ears at the same time.  Jenny (guest) kept feeling like someone was pulling on her trousers.  We tried the Ouija and had the spirit of Edgar, from 1943 aged 23.  He was pushed down the stairs here in this room and died of a head injury.  The man that pushed him was having an affair with his wife.  People have experienced being pushed on these stairs.  Was this the reason why?  His wife Charlotte who was a nurse, had tried to make him better.  Others were using the rods & pendulums to communicate with the spirits, a male spirit confirmed he was the one that had moved the large table.

With my last group we had a little movement on the Ouija & table tipping, but not enough to communicate.  Tried the large table and had some gently rocking.  Used the rods & pendulums for a short while, but everyone wanted to try the human pendulum.  We had a spirit come through that had known Mark (guest).  He was able to communicate with him.
In the free session I joined Mark and his family in the Salle Port, we started with table tipping and had some slight movement.  We then switched to glass work, and with a yes & no established communicated with the spirit with us.  We were hearing noises around us, and did hear and feel a breath.
A great night at Fort Amherst again!

Fort Amherst ghost hunt 20th May 2016
Chatham, Kent

fort-amherst-003

Fort Amherst is one of our favourite venues as there is never a dull moment during the event. It is also one of the spookiest as long tunnels and underground rooms often are.

During the séance sessions that I held we were joined by a spirit called Christopher who was aged in his late 30s and an Army Sergeant from the Second World War era.

Whilst Christopher was able to push and manipulate people we also heard a lot of strange noises, doors banging and footsteps. This was all very odd as there wasn’t a slight breeze outside let alone a strong wind to slam a door.

During the final séance session many of the group, including me had numb or tingling toes. What this meant or what it was supposed to mean is unknown, maybe we’ll find out on a return visit to Fort Amherst later this year.

This was another excellent ghost hunt at the Fort with lots of paranormal activity felt and experienced by the guests.

Fort Amherst ghost hunt 4th March 2016

Area: Lower Gun Floor
Ouija & Table Tipping

With my first group we had a female spirit called Olivia come through on the Ouija, who may have come through to the guests at a previous event elsewhere.  With the table we only had slight movement, so switched to glass, and they were able to communicate with a General connected to the fort.  Back on the Ouija a male soldier had come through, and kept spelling N and Z.  Asking if he could spell he said no.  So asking spirit to try and communicate through us, we worked with yes/no.  We got the word “hang”, spirit had hung someone for doing something bad to his wife.  We asked if his wife could spell, answered yes, and she stepped forward.  However, all we got was O and Z, asking if they were from Australia – yes.  We asked if the spirits would join us for some table tipping and they said yes, so we did just that.  We had a lot of movement with the table rocking and moving a lot.  We were also feeling a lot of coldness around us, and the feelings of being touched.

With my second group we had a female spirit come through on the Ouija, that may have been connected to the guests there.  I joined two guests on the table tipping, but only had slight movement so with the other guests finished on the Ouija, we all tried the table tipping again.  We did have some slight movement, but had a little more from the glasswork, however we couldn’t determine who the spirit was.

With my last group we tried the Ouija first, and immediately had a male soldier come through, however couldn’t quite determine his name, age or year.  We did ask if he liked what we were doing and he said no.  Simon (guest) thought he saw someone standing behind me, asking spirit to take the glass to where he was standing, the glass went to me.  We then switched to table tipping, and had some incredible movement, with the table rocking fast, tipping and twisting at random.  Moving across the room too.  We were also asking spirit to copy our taps on the table, which we did hear and feel back.

With the free session I joined guests on the Upper Gun Floor, who wanted to do a human pendulum.  The spirit that came through was female that seemed to be looking for someone.  She was killed by her father, was also pregnant by her father.  We asked if she wanted any help but she said no.  The guests all were amazed that spirit were able to move them to answer yes and no, saying quite an odd feeling.

A fun night, with evidence of spirit coming through, and a lovely group of guests who were all willing to join in and participate.

Fort Amherst ghost hunt 4th March 2016
Chatham, Kent.

fort-amherst-003

This marks 10 years of me going to Fort Amherst for ghost hunts, I have no idea how many times I’ve visited, one day I’ll work it out but needless to say that every time I visit something different or interesting happens on a paranormal level.

My first session in the Upper Gun floor the guests experienced lots of movement; arms being lifted, swaying, pushing and being pulled backwards. One guest also felt being prodded in his back as well as feeling cold spots. This was all attributed to a young male spirit called Jez or Jeremia. He was 15 or 16 years old and from 1660s and was a Soldier.

In the Sally Port I saw a dark mass, like a shadow behind two of the guests although there was a female spirit in the room as she was waiting for us to leave.

The second group once again experienced lots of arm movement, pushing and swaying. Although this time there was a more Nordic feel about it. The arm movements were that of a Nordic greeting.

Once again cold and warm spots were felt by the guests.

There was also a female spirit from 1700s but she did not give her name and continued to watch us.

The third group didn’t experience much at all, although they didn’t ask for anything to happen or seem to engage with the activity.

All in all, an excellent ghost hunt with the majority of the guests getting some paranormal occurrence or evidence of the paranormal in their sessions.

Fort Amherst ghost hunt 29th January 2016
Chatham, Kent

fort-amherst-1

For this event I chose the Guardhouse for all my sessions

The first group experienced Thomas (spirit) downstairs who pushed some of the guests, upstairs there was a Captain and a Sergeant who seemed to only make noises (footsteps) upstairs when we were downstairs. Odd smells were smelt by many including some very unpleasant ones. Hot and cold spots were also detected but it was a windy cold night in Chatham.

The second group didn’t feel the same spirit energy as the first group, mainly because no one really asked for anything or even spoke. There were a few odd smells again but they were not as strong as the first group session.

The third group experienced lots of movement in the séance including pushing and pulling of different people and everyone experienced their arms being moved in some way or spirit pushing down on their shoulders. There were two spirits with us at the time George; a key holder to the building and Thomas who I met with the first group who said that he wanted to talk, although I have no idea what was meant by this statement as he didn’t say anything.

This was another excellent ghost hunt and as ever we look forward to returning later in the year.

Fort Amherst ghost hunt 29th January 2016
Chatham, Kent

fort-amherst-1

Area: Radio Room
Kit & Human Pendulum

I started the night by giving the VIP’s a personal tour around the tunnels, showing them how to use the Ghost Pro’s and KII’s.  We stopped for a short while on the Gun Floor, and immediately we were sensing spirit around us.  I started feeling a static energy around me, and a pressure on my head, as if I was wearing a very tight hat.  I was also being pulled back.  I asked spirit to do this to others, and Pat (guest) to my left started being pushed & pulled back too.  We were also asking spirit to copy our whistles, and were very surprised when we heard whistles back twice, especially Luke & Jay (guests) when they heard it right next to them.

With the event starting we headed back to the guest’s area, and commenced with the three controlled sessions.  I started with the first group by showing them all the equipment, and we explored the Radio Room.  No activity on the KII’s and Sprit Box, but a lot of interaction with the Ghost Pro’s.  We then did a human pendulum, and was able to communicate with a French male from the 1600’s, aged 40+ and not married.  He was not connected to this fort.  We then had a young female spirit who had a small child, was not married, and had died young.  Then we had a male prisoner from Fort Horsted.  He had killed someone, but said he deserved it.  He had killed another person, and the prisoner had seeked revenge.  The prisoner had escaped once but had been recaptured.

With my second group again just activity on the Ghost Pro’s.  With the human pendulum we first communicated with a female who had miscarried.  Her husband was in the Navy and connected with the fort.  The second spirit that came through was her husband, who confirmed he was in the navy in WW1.  He said his ship was bombed, but by the Russians.  The ship sank but he survived.  He worked as a deck hand cleaning the ship.  After his wife had lost their child, he had an affair and fathered two children.  He was born and lived in Kent.  I wanted to know the spirit’s name, so I asked all the guests to clear their mind and ask spirit to tell them his name.  Initially we had John, then Sam, but three of us all had George, including Jenny (guest) who was in the middle with me.  Spirit confirmed that was his name but moving Jenny to yes.

My last group was too small to do a human pendulum so we just concentrated on kit.  We had a lot of activity on the ghost pro’s, communicating with George again.  On the spirit box we kept hearing a female calling what sounded like “help”.
Throughout all the sessions, people did comment that they felt they were being touched.
At the end of the night I joined most of the guests on the Gun Floor for some amazing Table Tipping with a very large table.

Fort Amherst ghost hunt 11th December 2015
Chatham, Kent

fort-amherst-1

Area: Upper Gun Floor
Human Pendulum

We had kept all the guests together for this event as the numbers were low enough, therefore I only had one controlled session.  My first guest in the middle was Nina, and the spirit we were communicating with was a male in his thirties.  He had murdered someone, over a woman.  He had children but had not married.  The second guest in the middle was Dean, and we had a female spirit, who was the daughter of the previous spirit.  Then we had a female friend of the daughter.  The last spirit to come through was connected to one of the guests called Sharon, she was an Aunt who had passed away just a short time ago.  Sharon was thrilled to have her come through, and although this isn’t normal for spirits we know to come through, she obviously need to receive that message.

The Radio Room – Ouija, table tilting

We began this session by trying some table tilting, and for quite a long time, nothing happened but eventually the table started to rock gently, and after a while it tilted up on two legs. After much encouragement for spirit to do more with the table, it still was not responding very well, so I decided to move on to the Ouija. First of all, we were joined by a female spirit by the name of Wendy who was from 1885, and was 62-years-old. She seemed happy to communicate and told us that there were 6 spirits in the room with us including herself, but that not all of them were friendly. When we asked if she knew any of the other spirits, she replied no. The glass then stopped moving and we realised she had left us, but we were then joined by a male spirit called Timothy. Interestingly, our medium Steve had seen a spirit called Timothy in the same room during the previous session. Timothy then went on to tell us that he had been shot during the war in 1945, he was never married and had no children. One of the guests asked if he was happy that we were there and he replied yes. We asked if he had a message for us, to which he spelt out “say goodbye”. When asked if he wanted to say goodbye to someone who was still living, he responded with yes, and proceeded to tell us that he wanted to say goodbye to his sister, Ruth. He told us that he is always at the fort and likes being there. We also had a lot of responses on the ghost pro which was corresponding to the responses on the Ouija board.

Unfortunately, in the second session we had no movement on the Ouija after several attempts at asking spirit to join us, so we tried some table tilting. It was slow to start with but the table did start to rock and tilt, and eventually we had some random spins, which the guests enjoyed. Spirit also walked the table a little.

Fort Amherst – 21-03-2015 (Kerry)

Monday, March 30th, 2015

Fort Amherst ghost hunt 21st March 2015
Chatham. Kent

Location: The Cave
Equipment: Ouija and table tilting.

Session 1 – Group C (VIPs)

We began the session by splitting the group so that some were on the Ouija and the others around the table. As soon as we placed our hands on the table it began to rock gently and the movement gradually got stronger. When requested to do so, spirit tilted the table up onto one leg and did a complete rotation. I came off the table at this point and asked spirit to try and walk the table down the two steps beside us, which it did to the guests amazement. We continued encouraging spirit to walk the table and it continued walking towards the barrels and tried to manoeuvre between two of them. It was a bit of a struggle as there wasn’t much room between them, but spirit seemed very persistent and eventually managed to squeeze the table through! The table then started picking up speed and continued walking down into the tunnel. Kym and I started calling out asking spirit to bring the table back, but the table just kept going! After a while the table did stop walking and started rocking from side to side quite violently as if in protest. It seemed it didn’t want to go back to where we started, and just wanted to keep going! We continued asking spirit to bring the table back and after a while it started walking back up the tunnel, re-tracing its steps, and took the table right back to where we started. The guests were amazed by what they had just experienced.
Sue was with the other guests on the Ouija table and they connected with a male spirit of 71 years, although they were unable to get a name. Sue sensed this man had breathing problems. He was never married, had no children, and he used to do maintenance work at the fort. After giving this information it became clear that he did not wish to communicate further.
The guests then swapped round so the others who were doing the table tilting could try the Ouija, and a male spirit by the name of Alan came through. He was 34 years old and died in 1904 via a gunshot to the head, his right temple. He said he was a civilian and not a soldier, was shot by his friend and was sad that his life had ended so early.
Before our session ended we thought we would try asking spirit if they were able to move one of the large barrels in the same way it had moved the table. So we gathered around one of them and placed our hands on the top and to our amazement the barrel started rocking from side to side, gradually getting faster and making lots of noise. Our time was up after a short time so we thanked spirit for their cooperation and finished the session.

Session 2 – Group A

Unfortunately on this session we didn’t get much activity. The group was split once again, and we had no movement from the glass at all on the Ouija, so a couple of the guests moved over to try the table tilting. There was a slight rocking on the table initially but even with all our encouragement it was difficult to get much more movement than that. Although the table did eventually tilt up on two legs and held this position for a while. The table then moved back to its starting position and there was no more movement. The guests who hadn’t tried the Ouija decided to have a go, and again there was no movement on the glass for quite some time. It was only about 10 minutes before the end of the session that the glass started moving, but we were unable to get any information as spirit only seemed interested in randomly moving the glass around the table.

Session 3 – Group B

Once again at the start of this session there was no movement on the Ouija so the guests decided to try the table tilting. The table took a while to move, but it eventually started to rock gently. The guests were very quiet so I kept urging them to join me in encouraging spirit to move the table. When everyone started to join in, the table started moving faster and spirit seemed to respond better to the noise we made. Whenever everyone went quiet the table would slow down and stop moving. We eventually managed to get spirit to spin the table on one leg and walk the table down the steps.
