Newhaven Fort ghost hunt 18th March 2017
Newhaven, East Sussex

Newhaven Fort is a new venue for us in 2017, and after a site visit back in January I was really looking forward to the event itself.

I started both my sessions in the Laboratory, in both sessions we were joined by spirit, the strongest spirit was a chap called Stanley, a Second World War soldier aged in his mid-40s who could lift peoples’ hands and arms, push people and pull people backward off their feet.

The second session the spirits were less forthcoming but nevertheless they were still able to move us.
After both sessions, I asked everyone to think of a question to ask spirit and recorded their questions and a gap after each question for spirit to respond in the hope of recording a spirit voice (a.k.a. EVP – Electronic Voice Phenomena). At the time of writing, the audio files are still being analysed.

After the second session, I asked questions via a spirit box in the hope of hearing a spirit voice but unfortunately none were forthcoming.

The East Bastion and Caponier were strange places to be and many guests wandered (quite quickly!) through them, on several occasions footsteps and other noises we heard behind the person exploring and whilst this area is known for ghostly whistles, none were heard.

We are looking forward to our return to this fort in October 2017.

True Crime Museum – 4th June 2016 – Steve

True Crime Museum ghost hunt 4th June 2016
Hastings, East Sussex

true-crime-museum

The True Crime Museum is an odd place, hence why we hold ghost hunts here, but our first event in February didn’t reveal anything unusual or menacing. This time though, is a different story.

This was in many ways, one of the strangest ghost hunts that I have ever undertaken. There were only a few guests, which may explain why it happened but the team were all affected by spirit at one point or another. Some of us were only affected once in a minor way, whilst others were affected all night.

We started the ghost hunt with a séance in the aptly named “Death Chamber”, the idea behind this was to build the energy that would last throughout the rest of the evening.

It all started well, with two brother spirits who joined us, starting to move guests by their hands and arms and as happened on our previous visit in February, the spirits tried to pull people backwards over the railings. The two male energies were Royal Mail post men from the year 1900, only one gave his name as David Webb.

Sue (team) was picking up on a smell of horses and was telling us about what she was sensing, when she announced that she wasn’t feeling right. So I made my way over to remove her from the circle. After she came out she explained that she became dizzy and didn’t feel right. Emma (guest) during this time also had dropped her head and was unresponsive to us calling her name. As Sue and myself made our way to Emma, she collapsed on the floor. I decided that closing the séance circle was the safest thing to do.

When then took a break so that those that were affected could recover.

After a tea break we continued with a table tilting session which was something sporadic, one minute the table was walking and moving, next it was stationary followed by some more movement. At one point this table was walking between the two rooms (the two rooms were linked by a small tunnel) which was interesting in itself.

After a short break we handed out equipment to the guests (and instructed them on how to use them) and let them wander around the museum, communicating and asking questions of the spirit.

I had just walked back into another room to collect another piece of kit, when Louise (team) came out of the “Death Chamber” and looked at me in an odd way, it was more of a surprised look. When I spoke to Louise and asked if she was alright it became clear that she wasn’t as her eyes were glazed over and she was unresponsive. It was necessary that Louise should exit the venue as the spirit that had more control over her than she did herself. It took three of us to remove her from the Museum and she was kicking and fighting with us that she didn’t want to leave, although gave no reason as to why.

After she was outside she couldn’t remember anything that had happened and only remembered going into the “Death Chamber” with a KII (EMF Meter).

As I walked back into the Museum on my own I could feel a malicious spirit energy present, although didn’t pay much attention to him as I was heading to see how the guests were getting on. At this time, I felt disorientated, dizzy and lost.  As I stood there I was aware of these feelings but unable to do much about it and then whatever had stopped me, had gone away and I was able to move again, although I had no idea what I was doing or going to do, so I returned to the base room.

Jason (team) also felt a sensation of being confused and disorientated once in the “Death Chamber” during the séance and at other times throughout the evening.

Guests continued to communicate with spirit and had a long conversation with a spirit using a Ouija board which revealed truths about what had happened on the night. Unfortunately, I wasn’t present so don’t know the full details. Louise during this time was still recovering as she felt weak.

Once we left the venue everyone felt OK, albeit tired.

All in all, this was a very unusual ghost hunt with some strange activity felt by various people including guests and team.

Rye Castle – 23rd April 2016 – Steve

Rye Castle ghost hunt 23rd April 2016
Rye, East Sussex

rye_castle

Rye Castle is a small venue which is why there are only a small amount of guests allowed for the ghost hunt, however on this evening a number of guests failed to turn up so the group was smaller than previous ghost hunts. This meant that the ghost hunt was more intimate for those who were present and the personal evidence that these guests encountered was brilliant.

We kept all the guests together since the group was about half the size it should have been and held three sessions.

The first session was a tech and gadget session in the main Keep where the guests we able to get basic yes and no answers to their questions as well as experiencing strange energy spikes on our meters.

The second session was a table tilting session in which we had some movement on the table and the third session was a séance session where we were joined by a male spirit aged in his 50s from the 1890s. He was called Anthony Dwight and he was a well-dressed gentlemen wearing a smart pin striped suit and had a pocket watch.

Anthony was able to move the majority of the guests by their arms and pull various people by their arms to the floor, which was all very amusing to us.

During the free session (when guests can venture off on their own) guests were coming back to us in the base room after being upstairs in the Keep or in the Woman’s Tower and reporting that something unusual happened to them. On all occasions they had thought there was someone else in the room with them, when in fact they had all been on their own (in pairs). One pair of guests reported that first they thought someone spoke to the them and then they heard the “woosh” of a lady’s dress as it passed them by.

All in all, a very interesting ghost hunt and we look forward to our return in September 2016.

True Crime Museum – 13th February 2016 – Kym

True Crime Museum 13th February 2016
Hastings, East Sussex

Human Pendulum
This was the first time we had visited the True Crime Museum, and we were all looking forward to the night very much.  Just looking around the museum and seeing the artefacts and stories was disturbing but fascinating.  Who would we talk to tonight?

With only a small amount of guests we kept the group together and each team member took turns to control a session.  Mine was the Human Pendulum, and we had three male spirits that came through, all knowing each other.  The first spirit was a soldier in his 30’s, had lived in Hastings and was married.  He had passed in the First World War, 1915, in water, with an explosion to his face.  Enemy fire from the Germans at the French Maginot Line.  It was very wet and muddy.  His two friends who were with him, who were medics, couldn’t save him.  Donna (guest) was in the circle at the time and she could visualise him with blond curly hair and blue eyes.  I asked all to clear their minds, and I asked spirit to tell us his name.  Donna had the name James, which was correct.  Myself and Kerry (team) had the names Bob and Eric, these were the names of his two friends.

The next spirit was his friend Eric, and confirmed he was with James when he died, he was a medic, and had passed in 1916.

Bob then came through, and again he was a medic and had died in 1916. Bob was married with two children.  His family were farmers, arable farming, in Hastings, but there were houses on his land now.

All three were childhood friends from Hastings.  All three were together when James had died but couldn’t save him.  When talking to James Kerry had felt a feeling on her face and nose, James confirmed there was an explosion on his face when he died.

True Crime Museum 13th February 2016
Hastings, East Sussex

true-crime-museum

On this first ghost hunt (at this location) I thought I would aim for something that many wouldn’t; 13 people on the 13th February. It proved to be a good decision as we had lots of activity on Ouija board and table tilting as well as the séance held in part of the museum called the Death Chamber.

During the séance we had a number of spirit present, the two most prominent ones were an Army Captain and a Bobby (an old fashioned Policeman) both of whom were able to move us beyond what we thought possible. Some of the movements were painful, but were actually on command of what someone had asked for, not necessarily the people who were being moved!

The Ouija board had lots of communication as well as our electronic gadgets and dowsing rods and pendulums.

It was an interesting ghost hunt and a location we look forward to returning to in the summer.

Rye Castle – 9th October 2015 (Kym)

Rye Castle ghost hunt 9th October 2015
Rye, East Sussex

Area: Womens Tower/Prison
Equipment: Writing Planchette, Glass Work, Table Tipping, Dowsing Rods, Pendulums

Group B – We started by using the dowsing rods & pendulums and everyone had movement except the male guest and Ted (curator).  There were several female spirits communicating with us, and we could feel the energies walking amongst us.  Ted was getting pushed back, sensing the energies didn’t want the men in the room.  We tried some table tipping and had continuous gentle rocking, no difference with females only touching.  We tried the writing planchette, but the table just kept rocking.  Tried some glasswork but only a little movement and again the table still rocked.  Switched back to table tipping which moved a lot, but gently.  Chloe (guest) started feeling sick, and felt like someone was holding her hips and gently rocking her.  She went outside for a short while, and came back when feeling better.  She also had an odd sensation of feeling like she had been here before.  We were all feeling a lot of energy around us, and were also being rocked with the table.

Group A – Started with the rods & pendulums but not much movement, although using my pendulum spirit confirmed he was the male spirit I had encountered before, and he would move the table for us, so we tried table tipping.  The table moved immediately however Tania (guest) felt the spirit did not want her on the table, and when she stepped back the table moved a lot more.  Again we were sensing when the spirit was behind us, and some of us felt unwelcome prods to our backs and arms.  We did also hear one heavy footstep near us, then a loud tap, then also a tap on the door, but when we looked out there was no-one there, and we hadn’t heard anything in the gravel outside.  We did some glasswork and got some answers: male spirit, was a jailer here, abused 30 women prisoners here, and other women that he brought here.  He was here in the 1200’s.  Using the writing planchette he drew the letter B.  Asked if this was his first initial he said no, asked if this was the initial of someone here – yes, however no-one had a name starting with B.  I asked if he knew someone here from a past life, he said yes, and that person’s name started with B.  Not everyone was comfortable knowing who it was so we didn’t ask.  We had some more random writing, then finished that session with some table tipping.

In the free session we wanted to try an experiment:  in the main tower we had some guests on the top level doing writing planchette, and some guests in the basement doing glasswork.  Some guests with Steve chose a number/shape for spirit to copy on both experiments, and was very pleased when the glass copied the number correctly.

I then joined some guests in the Women’s Tower and we started with table tipping.  We had the male spirit again, and were amazed by the amount of energy the spirit had.  We felt this by trying to push the table back down but was unable to.  The table would spin and walk around the room too.  We tried some glasswork and the spirit confirmed he was the jailer.  Asked if had done another job, yes he was a fisherman.  Neither paid well, but he stole.  He was caught and sent to prison.  He was murdered in prison.  Whilst he was a jailer he confirmed again that he abused the women here, but that he also liked men sexually.  Asking the colour of his hair, he had ginger hair and beard.  As the spirit seemed very willing to work with us we asked him to rotate the glass fast around the table, and then guests took it in turns whilst not touching the glass asking in their head for spirit to stop the glass and change directions, and to their amazement this happened correctly every time.  Guests also took it in turns to think of a shape/letter/number, and spirit would draw this about 50% of the time.

A fabulous night at Rye Castle, and we all look forward to returning there in Spring 2016.

Rye Castle ghost hunt – 9th October 2015

Rye Castle ghost hunt 9th October 2015
Rye, East Sussex

Being that this event was the last ghost hunt here for 2015 we had decided to try an experiment after our normal controlled sessions. It was a partial success and one in which we will try again at other venues as well as Rye Castle.

As usual my sessions were in the upper floor of the Keep, both sessions we had active spirit in the room with us and both times they (the spirit) were able to move people on command. In the first session there were two jailer spirits, one aged about 18, the other 32, both were dressed more in military uniforms than what we would regard to be police or jailer uniforms. White or cream trousers with red jackets and black hats. Both looked a little scruffy but gave the year as 1735. Neither one gave their name, but both responded to us and when people asked to be moved or pushed eventually the request was fulfilled.

The second group we were joined by Tobias who preferred to be called Toby, aged in his late 30s, Toby was able to move just about everyone in the circle either by lifting their arms, pushing or swaying them or by dragging people to the floor by their arms.

The Experiment was carried out by using a glass on a table and a writing planchette, with each table in different parts of the tower. The writing planchette on the top floor of the Keep and the glass on a table on the lower floor (the old mortuary). I stayed on the ground floor and held a numbered set of cards (0-10) and selected one at random. The object was to ask the spirit to move either the glass or the writing planchette and once movement was underway, someone on each table was to ask “their” spirit to go and see what card I was holding and the shape that I drew on a piece of paper and then repeat it on either the glass or the planchette. The first experiment didn’t really work as few people understood what they were supposed to be doing. However once we swapped the groups for another chance. The number was successfully drawn by the glass table but not the planchette. The shape no group managed to get.

We have tried this type of experiment before at other venues and have previously had some great results. Usually it is with a child spirit that this can work well, but we will continue to experiment with this idea at future events.

Whilst this event was the last of 2015 and we will be returning in 2016 although we are only holding two events at Rye Castle in 2016.

Rye Castle – 22nd August 2015 (Louise)

Rye Castle ghost hunt 22nd August 2015
Rye, East Sussex

Rye Castle is an interesting Venue, albeit small the activity and atmosphere is different on every occasion, which makes it one of my favourite places to visit.
Only having one group made the ghost hunt more interesting as the guests had all got to know each other before I started my table tipping and glass work session in the Women’s Tower. This meant that the guests were much more comfortable, willing and not afraid to encourage spirit to come forward

Women’s Tower
Table tipping and glass work
At the start of each session, I split the group of eight guests into four so everybody had a chance to participate in each activity. Some of the guests had already done table tipping so were eager to get started.

Group 1
The first group of guests on the table immediately started to encourage spirit and the table begun to move straight away. Movement was slow at first, but with a bit more encouragement the table started to spin and carry out random movements having us running around in circles.
One of the guests then asked spirit if they could possibly walk the table, and to our amazement the table started walking towards the door, up the steps and into the courtyard. All guest were shocked by the way spirit seemed to keep stopping the table as if to work out how to move the table in the right direction to negotiate the steps.

Group 2
With the second group, we had some light movement of the table, but it was quieter. I then asked spirit if they would like to communicate to us by using the glass instead of table tipping. We asked spirit to move the table to the right for a yes answer, and to the left for a no answer. Spirit agreed to speak through the glass work. Some of the guests didn’t want to participate in this activity, but were more than happy to watch.
Once again asking spirit to move the glass left or right for yes and no answers the glass moved immediately. We had a male spirit come through who told us he was a guard at the tower and looked after the ladies, and told us he very much enjoyed his job as he liked making the ladies laugh.

Very enjoyable sessions with some amazing table tipping, can’t wait for our next visit

Rye Castle ghost hunt – 22nd August 2015

Rye Castle ghost hunt 22nd August 2015
Rye, East Sussex

Each visit to Rye Castle has involved a different experience for us and our guests, tonight was no different.

Since there were few guests we didn’t split them up and therefore held three sessions, the first a tech and gadget session in the keep, followed by a table tilting and glass movement session and finally a séance session back in the keep.

The first session saw the guests get lots of communication on our various gadgets plus there we lots of unusual smells smelt by the guests at different times.

The table tilting session was most unusual since the table was moved from inside the Woman’s Tower out onto the gravel of the old exercise yard not once but twice!

The séance session we were joined by a spirit called Carmichael aged 52 and he stated he was a Jailer. The room seemed to be very busy with various spirit, but they were not interested in us and various people picked up on this strange phenomena. During the séance however many people were moved, including arm movement but also some people were pushed and swayed.

All in all this was a very interesting ghost hunt with activity which hasn’t been experienced before, namely the table tilting, which we hope to repeat on another ghost hunt at the Castle.

Rye Castle ghost hunt – 30th May 2015

Rye Castle ghost hunt 30th May 2015
Rye, East Sussex

I often wonder why we don’t come across more criminal spirits at this venue, however I now believe that this is because what we call criminal today is not as bad as it were 200, 300 or even 600 years ago. This Castle has seen many people over the years and that stealing a loaf of bread is looked down upon in today’s society, but 300 years ago it could have meant spending several days in a cell where fights and disease might have killed a person.

The first group in the Keep the séance started with lots of arm movements, which quickly evolved into twisting and dragging people towards the cells and sometimes the movement would drag a person to the floor, but generally the movement was always towards one particular cell. Once in this cell Amber felt arms around her neck which freaked her out.

However once we came out of the cell the atmosphere for the room had changed, before it was this maleficent sensation, now it was a calm feeling. So I asked each guest in turn to stand by the front window to see what happens. Each guest reported that they felt pushed or pulled (depending on which way they were facing) into the wall. Why this should happen we have no idea, but it happens most of the time to the majority of people.

The second group had a more placid time although there were different spirit around; Gordon a gentleman and Percy, a guard I think I have come across before here. Both who tried to manipulate the guests which did result in some arm movement but nothing like the distinctive movements of the first group.

Once again this was an interesting ghost hunt and we look forward to returning later in the year
