Fort Borstal ghost hunt – 1-3-2013

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 1st March 2013
Rochester, Kent

Once again the team were just as excited as the guests to return to Fort Borstal for the first of our visits to this magnificent fort in March, it was also the first of four Forts for the month of March.

This was our third visit this year and one thing that we have started to notice is that activity here happens to people in small groups of four or five people, any more than that and the activity is lessened.

As usual my area for the night was the counterscarp galleries since the majority of the team don’t like the staircase (200+ steps)

The first group we started in the left hand side of the galleries and almost immediately there were high levels of KII activity as well as some electronic communication. Various spirits were present including a couple of sergeants from The Second World War, a lady and a child.

Some guests felt touches on their legs and there was a strange breeze in the tunnels which was very unusual because there are no holes or gaps to the outside and once the door is closed (which it was) there should be no airflow within the complex.

Many guests and I also heard strange mumbling sounds and many guests were extremely jumpy in the dark, so much so that they didn’t want to do a séance, as that would have meant standing in the dark.

The second group to this area we started a séance almost immediately as I could see that the spirit were eager to show the guests what they could do. The spirit was called Captain Daniel, he looked to be a First World War soldier but he didn’t actually tell me.

Initially this started with lots of arm movement which then slowly progressed onto people hands being pushed into other people and poking them in the stomach. From this point as the spirit got more used to moving people he started to push people forwards and pull them backwards. Darren (guest) who was standing to my left felt that he was being held in place, as if someone was stood behind him, stopping him from moving. Darren felt this as well and kept looking behind him during the séance.

At the end of this session I held an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiment. There were many responses but the experts (independent Sound Engineers) and I couldn’t agree on the words being spoken, some of this was due to noise of the guests shuffling their feet or putting their hands in their pockets during the recording. The best one from this session can be heard at:-

http://youtu.be/HDePzen8ZF0

After this experiment I let the guests wander throughout all the galleries with some of our electronic equipment. High levels of EMF energy (Electromagnetic Fields) were picked up on our KII meters as well as some levels of electronic communication.

The third group to the counterscarp galleries had the most activity, as we went straight into a séance and the same spirit (Captain Daniel) was present and eager to demonstrate his presence to the guests. Arm movement started immediately and progressed around the circle until just about everyone had their arms moved and then Daniel moved onto pushing guests forwards and pulling them back as well as swaying them from side to side. Some guests were pulled by their hands to the ground. When asking for certain people to be moved (pushed or pulled) this usually happened on command until the majority of guests had been manipulated in some way.

At the end of this session I held another EVP experiment, once again there were lots of responses but there was too much background noise (from people) that hampered the technical analysis, however the best ones can be heard at:-

http://youtu.be/DMDCz0vxbpU

http://youtu.be/doino0rTRKA

Once again the guests were free to wander throughout the rest of galleries.

The rest of the night the guests were allowed to wander freely around the Fort to visit areas or activities they enjoyed the first time around with our equipment and to hold their own ghost hunt or do a solo vigil.

Once again the guests thoroughly enjoyed their ghost hunt with us and many had some very unusual paranormal experiences.

Fort Borstal private ghost hunt – 2-2-2013

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

Fort Borstal private ghost hunt 2nd February 2013
Rochester, Kent

This was a special ghost hunt for a Hen party as they wanted something scarier than a hotel, they couldn’t have picked a better location as the very nature of this Fort is meant to be hidden and the owners maintain that.

The best evidence to be had at this location is when there are very few people in a particular part, but because this group wanted to stay together (to start with) we all headed off to the old Officer’s Mess area.

After we gave the majority of the guests some of our kit to enable them to detect the spirit energies that were present, whilst I and Carl (a colleague) filmed them we noticed that any small amount of noise made the guests a bit jumpy, bearing in mind of course that we were in virtual darkness.

There were some extremely high levels of EMF detected and shown on our KII meters and the ghost communicator devices were also busy during this time. Many of the guests were asking the usual types of questions although several times someone asked whether the spirits would like us to leave and every time the answer was “Yes”.

Other guests felt some light touches and lights were seen in the room and after a while once everyone had got used to the dark I decided to hold a séance. The spirit energies that were present; two prisoners Timothy & Jeremy from the 1880s were able to move some people’s arms and also gently push some people, not to the point of falling over, but enough for them to know that it wasn’t them losing their balance.

After a short break the guests all went off with the other two members of my team; Marc & Jo to use Ouija boards and to do some table tilting whilst Carl & myself went off to a separate area to do some EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiments and to test some new hearing enhancement kit.

Once the guests came back from this session we then let them decide what they wanted to do & where they wanted to go. Most of the guests wanted to go to the counterscarp galleries as this was the only area in which they hadn’t visited during the first two sessions, so the whole group was split into two groups and I took the first group to the galleries.

As soon as we arrived in the area and after the guests wandered throughout the galleries I decided the best way the guests could experience spirit activity was to hold a séance. Captain Daniel Bedford was the spirit energy that was keen to demonstrate his abilities. He was about 6’3” in his late 20s and of a slim build. He seemed to be a very strict man and angry that he had passed away during the First World War, he considered himself too young.

Throughout the séance Daniel was able to manipulate the guests’ arms as well as push them forward and pull them backwards. He was also able to twist people and pull them down onto the floor. Some guests tried to resist this movement but the spirit energy was far greater than their strength and eventually all guests were moved, some pinned against a wall.

At the end of this séance I conducted an EVP experiment the best results can be heard at:-
http://youtu.be/prEBSLiGhzo
http://youtu.be/4oqhNyUcmXg
http://youtu.be/5fdvZiJM_nQ

The second group to this area were also treated to some unusual arm movement by Daniel although this time and with these guests many felt pains in their knees and this was before any pushing and pulling had started. Many guests in this group were also swayed and twisted and eventually the same types of movements were felt by this group as well and even though there were more people in this group than the first once again many people were pushing against a wall, resisting the force turned out to be futile as the spirit energy just wanted us against a wall, once we were moved to the wall the pressure felt in peoples arms and legs just dissipated away.

Once again a very enjoyable ghost hunt and one which everyone present are unlikely to forget as this was one of the most physical ghost hunts at Fort Borstal that we have undertaken.

Fort Borstal ghost hunt – 12-1-2013

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 12th January 2013

Rochester, Kent

As with any of the Forts that we investigate, we always look forward to each event as paranormal activity usually happens in a surprising manner and since Fort Borstal is relatively new to us (our first event was October 2012) we are still looking for the “gems” of the Fort.

As usual I took the area that few of my team wanted to go to, mainly due to the wonderful [sic] staircase, all 200 steps of it!

The first group started in the left-hand counterscarp gallery and we were joined by a prisoner who was in his early 20s, six foot tall and had a very stocky build. This spirit who didn’t give his name was however very happy to talk to the guests via our electronic equipment, although he told me that he was at the Fort in 1885, which meant that it is likely that he was one of the prisoners who built the Fort. He also answered questions posed by the guests and one of the questions was whether he was stuck here, to which he answered “Yes”. I asked if he wanted to leave and needed help to do so, but he did not confirm, in fact he seemed to be undecided on this.

During the séance this spirit energy was able to move some of the guests arms and also gently push the guests. The arm movements however were limited to just one half of the circle. There was also a female spirit energy present although she was watching us and didn’t want to talk to anyone.

Throughout the whole session there were high levels of EMF (Electromagnetic Fields) as shown on our KII meters and high level of electronic communication. Many guests also felt cold spots and drafts, even though this is a sealed space with the only access to the outside from the entrance that we had walked down and once the door is closed no sounds or air movement should affect us.

The second group to the same area felt the presence of the same prisoner energy and another male spirit who also didn’t want to give his name. Once again during the séance there was some minor arm movement and several guests including me felt items of clothing being touched or moved. One guest said that she felt a “proper” poke in her back.

Due to the fact that the level of activity was low, the group spilt up with half of the guests venturing down to the other end which is also another counterscarp gallery which looks out over the other side of the dry moat. They held a séance here as well and also had some light arm movement, but one guest felt some touches by spirit on his arm which scared him and the séance circle was broken.

After these two controlled sessions, like the majority of our ghost hunts, we then let the guests roam and go to whichever area they would like to do their own ghost hunting. Many of the guests opted for The Officer’s Mess area, as this area was not used during the controlled sessions.

Four guests however asked me if I would join them back in the counterscarp galleries as they wanted to get a similar level of activity they experienced the first time. On enetering the area for the third time I noticed that the atmosphere felt different, a good different. After the guests wandered around the right-hand side gallery and made their way to the left-hand, I set up my laser grid in one of the tunnels and although nothing interesting was seen, it did allow me to take some interesting photos. I then joined the group and suggested that we hold a séance as I could see spirit energies wanting to “play”.

As soon as we started the séance a male spirit energy called David joined us, he was a high ranking Officer in the British Army from the Second World War era and he had 3 pips on his shoulder, which I have since found out means that he was a Captain. He was in his 50s and about 5’8” in height. He sported a full beard which was “Salt & Pepper” in colour and he wore round rimmed spectacles. David was very polite but also very stern, but when I asked whether he would move the guests he immediately said to be “Fine” and then everyone felt their arms being moved along with lots of swaying and pushing, followed by lots of twisting sensations and people being pushed into other people.

Scott (guest) was also able to ask questions in his head and use us as pendulums for yes and no answers, all of which were answered correctly according to Scott.

At the end of this session I held an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiment and played it back immediately as I thought I heard some answers to the questions posed by guests, however the biggest surprise was the question that I asked, everyone could hear the answer when the recording was playing, without any enhancement, which is quite rare.

The EVP can be heard at http://youtu.be/RpVS3t_x6LE

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the ghost hunt with many people getting their own paranormal experiences, many guests experienced the most activity when they were in small groups of just 4-5 people.

Fort Borstal – 12-1-2013

FORT BORSTAL GHOST HUNT 12th January 2013

I was with Steve most of the night but a couple of highlights for me were; during our second session in the casement galleries I went with some guests to the opposite end to Steve and three guests.  We held a séance circle and initially most of the guests felt like they were being swayed, like on a boat.  Then some guests had some gentle arm movement, to their amazement.  All were enjoying the feeling, until one guest felt like a hand around his wrist.  This unnerved him somewhat and after calming down we realised our session had ended.

After our two controlled sessions I took a group of guests to the Officers Mess.  We tried table tipping but unfortunately only heard the odd taps under the table, however we did hear heavy footsteps in the corridor.  Helen (team) who was filming went to investigate but it stopped.  When she came back into the room we would hear them again.  We then decided to try a séance circle in the corridor, this was very enjoyable as all the guests had some gentle arm movement.  The guests would ask in their head for spirit to move their arms a particular way, and to their surprise they got what they asked.

I then went with a group of guests to the Caponier.  As we went in a group of guests were just finishing talking to spirit on the Ouija table, however when we tried only slight movement on the glass was felt.  But to our amazement we heard a stone thrown on to the ground next to us.  We looked for the stone and found one in a small gulley.  Just when we resumed with the Ouija table we heard another stone fall to the ground.  Again when looking saw a white stone next to the first one, and we knew that one had not been there before.  Then whilst trying the Ouija table again we heard a third stone being thrown onto the wet concrete, however after much searching could not find it.  Here is a photo of the two stones.

Fort Borstal ghost hunt – 20-10-2012

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

FORT BORSTAL 20th October 2012

The team were all very excited to have the opportunity to investigate this venue for the first ever time, and we were not disappointed.

Carl was with me in the Officers Mess all night, and with our first group of guests we had a lot of communication with our Ghost Pro Meters. The spirit that was with us was a prisoner from the prison opposite aged between 20 and 30 years.  He passed over within the last 50 years.  He had murdered someone but was sorry for what he had done.  Later the name Jim came through on the P-SB7 and Jim confirmed that was his name.  We also had a German Airman come through on the Ghost Pro.

The second session brought through the same two spirits, and guests were feeling unexplained touches.  Carl had the taste of blood and had to leave the area.

At the start of the third session we had excessive KII activity and extreme coldness.  We held a seance circle, and immediately guests were being moved in many different directions, with their arms being stretched to the ceiling then down to the floor.  Team and guests were asking out loud and in their heads where to move people and spirit were obliging.

The final session of the night guests were given the opportunity to choose where to go.  I stayed in the base room with some guests.  We tried communicating with spirit using the ouija board but nothing, so used the ghost pro.  We established a young boy was with us, aged under 10 and liked playing here with his friends.  I had the name Ben which he confirmed was correct.  We placed a led ball on the floor encouraging movement but nothing.

Great night ~ can’t wait to return.

Fort Borstal ghost hunt – 30-11-2012

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

FORT BORSTAL 30th November 2012

Group B
Myself & Jo were in the Officers Mess area, and started with a seance circle.  Immediately spirit made themselves known on the Ghost Pro’s and KII’s, by moving guests with gentle swaying and arm movement.  We heard a whistle, and one of the guests reported seeing a white shadow in the corridor.  As the spirit got used to moving us, we all ended up being in very different positions to when we started.  We then tried some glass movement which proved successful, but just as we were starting one of the guests watching had her arm moved up.  We established the spirit of James was present (he had made himself known to us previously) and some of the guests had established the name Greta from a spirit they were communicating with through the Ghost Pro.  Jo stayed in the first room with some guests and continued with a séance circle. A young girl called Emily made herself known, enjoying moving the guests arms, and they had the urge to sing Ring O Roses and Oranges & Lemons.

Group C
Our second group was very large, and we started with 17 persons doing a séance circle.  Many guests were gently swayed, and some had their arms moved.  We then split up into smaller groups, with myself staying with four guests and continuing with a séance circle.  We had gentle arm movement and being pushed.  We heard what sounded like a male burp/growl next to us, and one guest had her hair tugged several times.  Jo assisted a group doing glass movement – they had a female spirit called Sam aged in her thirties.

Group A
Again we started with a séance circle, and had some arm movement and swaying.  We also heard an unexplained noise in the corridor.  We then split into smaller groups, with myself with a group doing glass movement.  We established James was still with us, and seemed to enjoy taking the glass to the edge of the table.  He continued to do this throughout and would also take the glass all around the edge of the table, quite rapidly at items.  The KII and Ghost Pro that were under the table were lit up constantly.  I then took some of the guests back to base while Jo stayed behind with some guests that wanted to try glass movement and table tipping.  Jo & guests had a very active session with table tipping.

Free Session
For the last session I took a group of guests to the Caponier for a ouija board session.  The spirit that came forward said they were called Emily age 9 and needed help to pass over.  However when I got Steve to help, he said the spirit present was a male called Geoff age 79 from 1944, and that he was tricking us.  Geoff also said he was the ‘Emily’ from the earlier séance session.  Just a reminder that spirits like to play tricks on us too. Great night again at Fort Borstal and look forward to returning.

Fort Borstal ghost hunt – 30-11-2012

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 30th November 2012
Rochester, Kent

Fort Borstal is still new to us as this is our second investigation here, however the evidence that we encountered on our first investigation surprised us (the EVPs especially) and we were hoping that the ghost hunt would reveal more to us. We and our guests were not disappointed.

I spent most of the night in the casement galleries which turned out to be the warmest area albeit the most walking to get there.

The first session started with some KII activity and some communication via our electronic equipment but within a matter of minutes we started a séance to get the guests to sense the spirit energy that was present.

His name was Jake and he was a prisoner who had helped to build the Fort, he had short dark hair and was about 6’ tall and of a well-built stature. Although he did not look friendly he seemed a happy sort of person. Jake started by lifting the arms of some of the guests and then some light pushing sensations. Some guests were swayed and twisted.

During the séance heavy breathing, whistles, mumbling and groans were heard from further along the tunnel and since we were the only people in this area and no other group was anywhere near us these remain unexplained. Some guests also reported strange cold spots that emerged and faded around them at various intervals. The area we were in is a sealed area with no possibility for a breeze as all doors were closed and there are no holes for air from outside to come in.

We moved down to the other end of the gallery as the guests wanted to explore, whilst down here I set up a laser grid, which some guests reported seeing the lights change and flicker, two guests volunteered to investigate but came back very quickly because they heard a scream, the rest of us didn’t hear anything.

As we were leaving the area, myself and a guest who were at the back heard footsteps behind us and it sounded like someone wearing dress shoes as opposed to boots, which made everyone want to leave the area quicker!

I took the second group to the same area, as I could still sense that Jake was still around and now had the desire to manipulate the guests more forcefully.

The séance started with lots of arm movement, just about all the guests felt Jake’s energy as he lifted their arms as per the guests requests (which was certain guests asking in their heads). I noticed that there were also two other spirit energies present, both WWII Soldiers, called Dave & Justin. These two energies could obviously see what was happening, they didn’t join in but I could see them laughing at us.

As Jake got more used to moving certain guests the intensity of the movements increased with some guests being pulled downwards to the floor. There were also incidents of peoples arms being moved to stroke the stomachs and hair of other guests. Several guests were twisted and moved into very uncomfortable positions and generally tangled up with each other. Some guests were even forced to the floor and couldn’t get up.

Whilst all this was going on not many noises were heard as we were too busy laughing however just before the end of the séance we all heard a name being called out, I thought it sounded like my name spoken in a female voice. However not all guests could agree on the name spoken.

The third session was also in the same area and room as the second group as the guests wanted to experience the same types of movements.

Once again Jake was present as well as the WWII soldier Justin, once again the spirit energies started to lift the guests arms and move them according to their non-verbal instructions. There was also the same type of stroking attempted, although the guest that this was happening to didn’t like the idea and kept ducking and diving out of the way, which only increased the amount of activity as the spirit energies wouldn’t give up.

Many guests were also swayed and pushed but not quite as spectacular as the second group, this time it was more gentle and controlled.

During this séance many whistles were heard as well as other strange noises which we all heard but couldn’t decide what we were actually hearing, although the noises did sound of a metallic nature.

A couple of times Mercedes (guest) who was opposite me didn’t look well, she also complained of feeling nauseous and on both occasions I had to step out of the séance circle to help her. Both occasions after a few minutes she felt better although on the last occasion she felt drained.

After leaving the area Mercedes felt better although still quite drained.

After we finished our controlled sessions we then let the guests go back to any area they wished to try to get more activity or experience any further activity. All of the guests wanted to experience the Ouija boards again or to investigate the Officer’s Mess. No-one, least of all me, wanted to go back to the galleries, as the staircase to get to this area is a hard one to climb (approx. 130 steps) and it is a lot harder going back up!

Once again a very enjoyable ghost hunt with the level of physical activity much higher than our first investigation unfortunately this time I didn’t record any interesting EVPs or videos, but since we will be returning to this venue in 2013, there will be lots of opportunities to gather more tangible evidence.

Fort Borstal ghost hunt, Rochester – 20-10-2012

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 20th October 2012
Fort Borstal, Rochester, Kent

Fort Borstal is one of those sites as a Ghost Hunt company we never thought we would be able to investigate, because it is privately owned. However we were nicely surprised after the owners contacted us wanting to know whether we would be interested in investigating their Fort.

Considering this is one of the five that was built especially to protect Chatham and we already investigate Fort Horsted (which is the largest) we were very keen to see what this Fort had in terms of spiritual activity. We were not disappointed.

The approach to this Fort is strange, not least because of the lack of lighting and it certainly looks a scary place upon arrival and as my team said to me, very atmospheric.

For this ghost hunt we had three distinctly different areas to investigate; The Caponier, which as the worst staircase in the world to navigate, 92 steps down (and back up!), The Officers Mess, which was a secret area even to those soldiers stationed there in The Second World War and a third underground Caponier.

My area for the night was the main Caponier (with the wonderful staircase [sic])

The first group had varying degrees of activity on our electronic equipment; some spikes of KII activity and some communication, but I thought it would be better to hold a séance since this particular place doesn’t get any people visiting and the energy levels would naturally be low.

A male energy by the name of Thomas came forward, he told me that he was a Colour Sergeant (Sergeant Major) in the Army. He was about 6’2” aged in his 20s and of stocky build and he was wearing civilian clothing (a blue shirt). He also gave me the impression that he was a funny character and had a wicked sense of humour. The was also another male energy present; Dave a private. Both were from the Second World War era.

During the séance many voices, mumbling and footsteps were heard, although given where the other two groups were, no person on site could have been responsible for these noises.

Both Thomas and Dave treated most of the guests to some gentle arm movement as they in turn went from one person to another to manipulate them.

At the end of the séance I conducted an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiment. Due to the natural echo because of the long tunnels cancelling out the background noise was quite difficult, as was listening for ghost voices, however the clearest and most audible from this session can be heard at:-

http://youtu.be/9euwDXfViZc

The Second group I took to the other end of the Caponier (as it is a double Caponier).  Almost immediately there was good communication from our electronic equipment but no KII spikes. During the resulting séance a WWII Soldier by the name of Jeremy came forward and was able to move some of the guests arms. There was also a female energy present, aged about 20 years old and called Isabelle. During the séance we heard lots of noises, some in the tunnels and one very loud sound that came from the dry moat, this sounded like wood being banged (an impact sound). Several whistles we also heard, although when we heard them no-one could say in which direction the sound came from.

The Third group I took to the same area as the first group, although very little happened because the group were busy laughing and joking with each other and paying little interest to the reason why we were there i.e. ghost hunting.

The strangest sound that we heard was the sound of footfalls, as if someone was approaching but given the staircase and the fact that it was dark, we would have easily seen someone approach, as they would have needed a torch to navigate the staircase.

After we finished our controlled part of the night, we let the guests (under supervision) return to any area which they enjoyed or wanted to experience again in a smaller group or on their own.

I spent some time with another member of my team in the Officer’s Mess just for about 10 minutes or so but during those 10 minutes the both of us heard; a door slam (there are no doors to slam), lots of footsteps, knocking sounds and female voices. We also did several EVP recordings as there was a male energy present who seemed to be of great importance. This energy didn’t like either of us being there and made us feel uncomfortable. Carl who was listening with sound enhancement equipment heard some responses when I asked whether this spirit energy was from Yorkshire. Carl heard “go” “leave” and some laughing.

I too also heard sounds but couldn’t hear any words although I did have a strange chemical taste in my mouth. We both also saw some strange lights further along the corridor.

On analysing our EVP recordings the following results can be heard at:-

http://youtu.be/CZe02y2bBJw
http://youtu.be/ad4R00PIaHE

After this the remaining guests joined us in this area to experience the same feelings that we had both just felt. Although the uncomfortable feeling had dissipated, probably due to the fact that any area isn’t scary when there are lots of people about, we did hear some noises, taps, knocking, whistles and some loud bangs.

However one of the guests did capture a strange photograph, which seems to have the shape of a person at the end of the corridor. Both the photographs below are copyrighted to Emma Coyle.

All in all a very enjoyable ghost hunt, especially since we were the first ghost hunting company to investigate Fort Borstal, hopefully future visits to this location we will have more activity experienced by us and our guests.
