Merley House

http://www.ghosthuntevents.co.uk/merley-house.php

History of Merley House
Merley House in Wimborne, Dorset was built in 1756. In 1875 the whole estate was sold by auction but there is little information as to whom it was sold until it was bought by Ivor Guest, 1st Lord of Wimborne. In 1927, the MP for South Dorset, Angus Valdemar Hambro purchased the estate in a dilapidated condition, spending two years renovating it.
In 1939 the outbreak of war meant that the house was requisitioned by the War office. When they left in 1946 the house was again sold at auction. The house was converted into flats.
During the 1960s a holiday park was started, by the present owners, to help finance the restoration of the house. The ground floor was opened to the public and contained a collection of model cars, lorries, airplanes, ships and train sets. Most recently the downstairs was restored again to create spacious and elegant areas.

Ghosts of Merley House
From our investigations we have found that the most active areas are in the cellar, although upstairs activity still happens, especially on the first floor with disembodied voices being heard as well as laughter and the sound of children running around.

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt – 18th April 2015

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt 18th April 2015
Colchester, Essex

This was our second investigation in Colchester of the week as we had been at The Town Hall the night before and were hoping that the spirits would make themselves known in the Hotel.

We split everyone into 4 groups and each group headed off to a different area with different team members. I chose the cellar as always because some things happen here which do not happen anywhere else in the hotel.

There was only really one spirit in the cellar, his name was Michael and he was a Dray man (he delivered ale and beer from the local brewery). He fell to his death at The Red Lion hotel (although it wasn’t called that then) in 1833 by falling down the keg drop and breaking his neck.

This wasn’t the only spirit that made an appearance although Michael was the most prominent or the strongest energy. There were also other male spirits who lurked in the background and a couple of female spirits who made themselves known to different people.

All but the last group to the cellar there was lots of arm movement on command, with the arms of people being lifted when they thought nothing was going to happen to them, people being pushed and swayed on their feet much to their surprise and amazement. Some of the guests saw what they thought were people lurking in the shadows, or people watching them.

Plus every so often one of the grates of the keg drop is loose so when people on the high street walked on it, it made a very loud bang. This didn’t help with people’s nerves, especially when they were standing closer to it!

There were also many strange noises and whispers heard by some people but not everyone, although those that heard the sounds could not always say in which direction the sound came from.

In the second group there was a male guest who said that he felt petrified, he didn’t know why but he was afraid of something, this was apparently very uncharacteristic of him as he usually wasn’t scared of anything. After the session had ended he went outside and when he came back in he felt fine.

The last group didn’t want to be moved and every time someone walked on the grate several people screamed and jumped. However another male guest in this group during the course of the séance started acting in an aggressive manner and when I looked at him he didn’t look himself and looked very angry and had the face of someone who wanted to fight. He also reported that he felt very cold and at one point unable to stand properly. I felt that had the conditions have been right he (the guest) would have gone into a trance to allow the spirit to talk, however I also felt that it wasn’t safe to do so. After I placed this guest in the centre of the circle he regained his normal look and stance and told me what he felt, although he didn’t know why he felt so aggressive.

We have held numerous ghost hunts at the Red Lion Hotel and I have held many séances in the cellar, but never has a person felt aggressive for no reason or been affected by spirit in this way, let alone two people in different groups behaving in similar ways.

Once again a very enjoyable ghost hunt that many people had paranormal encounters and experiences that they weren’t expecting.

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt – 7th March 2015 (Kym)

Wednesday, March 18th, 2015

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt 7th March 2015
Colchester, Essex

Area: Room’s 9 + 10
Equipment: Scrying, Dowsing Rods, Pendulums, Glass Work

Group B – Started in room 9 by showing the guests how to use the dowsing rods & pendulums, and all were amazed by the movement they received.  Most had a male spirit with them.  Louise (guest) had the name Simon.  Asking the rods confirmed yes that was his name.  We tried some scrying but wasn’t able to see much change.  We then went to room 10 to try some glasswork and after while we did get some movement on the glass.  One guest Shane stopped touching the glass and started asking spirit questions in his head, and was amazed that the glass started moving much faster, and moving to where he was asking.  The spirit was a boy aged 12 called Simon.  He drew the letter S for his first initial.  He was with his mum, but not his dad.  His dad wasn’t very nice.  They had both been killed by the dad.  They had lived here at the hotel.

Group A – With the next group we again started in room 9 with the rods & pendulums and had lots of movement.  We tried some scrying but couldn’t see any changes.  We moved to room 10.  Whilst some guests were trying some glass work, others were taking it in turns to stand in the short corridor joining the two rooms.  Taps were being heard in the door to room 9 but no-one was in there.  We did get some glass movement when our time was up, stayed for a short while longer and the glass was moving around the table rapidly.

Area: Restaurant
Equipment: Ouija, Table Tipping, Writing Planchette

Group B – This group decided not to stay so I joined Steve in room 10 for the Tech Session.  We were initially using Ghost Pro’s & Mel Meter.  Also our newest member of the team, Tarquin the Boo Buddy Bear was with us.  It was noted when the bear said it was getting warm in here, the temperature on the Mel meter increased, but not by significant amounts i.e.. 73.4 to 73.9.  We then turned on the Ovilus and was receiving words that did seem to match the bear i.e.. Play time and the word “play” being shown.  We turned on the Spirit Box but had no words at all.  Throughout the ghost pro’s were lighting up and guests were asking various questions.  Some guests in room 9 came through asking if we had whistled, as they had been hearing whistling the room, but we hadn’t and had not heard the whistling at all.

Group A – This last controlled session we started with the four male guests on the ouija and Steve assisting.  I joined the remaining four guests on the writing planchette but had no movement at all.  On the ouija the spirit of Timothy was with them.  He was six years old and seemed to just want to play.  We then tried some table tipping and immediately the table started lifting.  The table then lifted on one corner and started turning, faster when we asked.  We then asked if spirit could take the table into the adjoining room to the bar, and the table started sliding, similar to skiing, towards the bar.  It then continued to lift and spin when we asked.

For the free session myself and Louise joined four guests in the cellar who had the ouija board.  They had a male spirit with them who had worked in this building in the 1400’s before it was the Red Lion.  He had died in the cellar of a heart attack.  They had heard him talking next to them before we had come down.

Fun night with some lovely guests!

Shire Hall – 24th January 2015

Shire Hall ghost hunt 24th January 2015
Hereford, Herefordshire

This was the second time that we have visited this venue, we would like to visit more frequently but Hereford is a four hour drive for us.

I held all three of my sessions in the cellar and every time we started with a séance. Spirit were quiet playful and a little mischievous, especially with a group of all girls. The male spirits had fun making them feel uncomfortable. This resulted in the first group being quite a lot more scared that subsequent groups but also this group had far more experiences and sensations with about half of the group feeling feint, one girl had to sit down as she virtually collapsed. All groups though felt the sensations of their arms being moved and being pushed, pulled, swayed and rocked by unseen hands.

I was joined on more than one occasion by two spirits, one called Tony (Antony) who was an old fashioned Bobby (Policeman) from the 1880’s. The other was a farmer type of person, probably a labourer although he never said anything apart from that he worked with pigs. He gave no name. Both these spirits joined me on every session in the cellar although they took turns trying to affect the guests.

Every group to the cellar saw shadows or lights that they could not explain. This cellar had windows at one end although this was an L shape corridor and the lights from outside did not shine through the main corridor, yet several guests saw shadows (as if someone walked across the corridor) and lights which looked like miniature shooting stars according to the people that saw them.

Two groups (the first two) both smelt something that they described as being disgusting, rotting meat was one description the other of decaying and dampness. Several people also smelt a sulphuric smell (rotten eggs) however this was not something that affected everyone as I and the people either side of me on both occasions smelt nothing out of the ordinary.

This was an excellent ghost hunt as all guests had some paranormal occurrences in different parts of the building. Many enjoyed the fact that after we had finished our controlled sessions we allowed the guests to wander around the building of their own accord whilst they held their own style ghost hunt and we also allowed them to borrow our equipment during this time.

Hopefully we will return next year

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt – 31-5-2014

Thursday, June 26th, 2014

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt 31st May 2014
Colchester, Essex

This was our third visit to the Red Lion Hotel in 2014 and with different team members attending I was personally hoping for a different ghost hunt. My sessions however were much the same but to be honest I wasn’t expecting a change.

The cellar itself doesn’t change however the spirit that we have encountered here all seem to be from a particular period in history, this I find odd and unusual because there should be no reason for this.

The first group to the cellar we met a male spirit called George who was from the 1920s, very well dressed gentleman about 5’9” and aged in his 30s. Asking George to touch and move guests resulted in some very quick and unusual movements felt by the guests. Many of the guests were pushed in a circular motion or rocked gently from side to side. Some people were pushed down towards the floor and two guests found that their limbs didn’t work as expected, with one guest unable to move her knees and the other being made to lift one of her feet. This proved very funny with the people who weren’t being affected!

During the séance we all heard a number of noises that sounded unusual or unexplainable, considering I have held about twenty ghost hunts at the Red Lion Hotel, I know what most of the “normal” sounds are and what causes them. This sound however was different, it sounded very similar to someone opening a can of carbonated drink within the same room as us or discharging an old fashioned soda bottle. The soda bottle was more likely because the cellar had a few old bottles which were being sent for recycling, these old soda bottles had been in the cellar for many years, one of the members of staff said that they were in the cellar when they started working at the hotel, 16 years ago, was the spirit letting us know he was there by manipulating these?

The second group to the cellar we were joined by Michael a spirit who was 71 years old and someone that I have seen on several occasions, he is a very jovial character and likes to “play” but only with the right people. Unfortunately this group wasn’t the right group of people for this activity and whilst some people felt their arms being moved, others didn’t.

The third group to the cellar were the right people for Michael to play with and we were joined by Annabel who was wearing a Georgian style dress. Annabel was in her 20s. Plus George the spirit the first group met also joined us. Between the three spirits, although it was mostly Michael and George the guests were pushed, and pulled backwards, swayed and rocked as well as their arms being lifted and moved, mostly on command and several times the sensation and the feeling of being pulled down to the floor by our arms and hands.

This was another excellent ghost hunt with the majority of the guests having some form of paranormal encounter which they thoroughly enjoyed but couldn’t necessarily explain.

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt – 25-5-2013

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt 25th May 2013
Colchester, Essex

Normally at this ghost hunt we set up the majority of our remote cameras so that we and our guests can monitor the whole hotel during the ghost hunt, however due to a technical problem and the fact that we didn’t have enough time to set up all the equipment before the ghost hunt we only had half of our usual cameras. However those we set up in the most active areas and people were transfixed all night with the different activity seen from those cameras.

As usual I spent most of the night in the cellar, as it is a strange energy that resides here, people often experience the same types of feelings and sensations every time we visit.

More or less as soon as we started the séance a male spirit energy called Tommy Belcher (or Bletcher) joined us. He was about 34 years old and quite tall at 5’11”. A wealthy man who was wearing a three piece black suit with a top hat. He also sported a silver pocket watch and was from 1850s – 1860s and many would describe him as being a typical “Hooray Henry”. This energy was present throughout all three sessions that I held in the cellar.

The first group of guests experienced some light and gentle arm movement, which was generally on command and affected the majority of the guests. Tommy was also able to gently push some of the guests, once again this happened on command.

Some guests also felt tingling or warm sensations in their hands, although one guest had very cold hands, which he said was unusual for him.

The second group to the cellar had much more activity, mainly because they were more open minded and did not restrict the sensations that Tommy was trying to achieve with them. Everybody had some form of spiritual movement, either their arms being moved at will and sometimes against their will or being pushed, swayed or pulled to the floor. Being pulled to the floor is a very common occurrence within the cellar. The staff of the hotel don’t like the cellar either and if they ever have to get something from the cellar they don’t hang about getting it!

One group of friends were being pulled to the floor, so one of them said to their friends “think up thoughts” and the more that they said up, the further down Tommy pulled them.

The Third group also had some gentle arm movement forced upon them by Tommy, but it seemed that Tommy wore himself out with the second group and even though the movements were defined, they were slow.

Many guests reported seeing shadows and movements through the tunnel part of the cellar, this is also a common occurrence as well as hearing footsteps and shuffling when at the other end of the cellar.

A very enjoyable ghost hunt was had by all, although after our controlled sessions few guests wanted to go back to the cellar as they did not want to be pushed, which always seems to occur to the guests that venture into the cellar by themselves.

No EVP’s (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiments were undertaken by me in the cellar because there was too much noise outside the hotel.

There is however a video from the night of the best bits from all groups, which is available to watch at www.ghosthuntevents.tv

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt – 31-10-2012

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

RED LION HOTEL 31st October 2012

I was using the coffee shop for the evening, and started with the ouija board and writing planchette.  We had some small movement with the writing, but nothing with the ouija so we amalgamated into one group and tried glass movement, with some of the group going down to the cellar of the coffee shop.  This was successful with Alice Millar identifying herself to us.    I asked Alice to draw a circle which she did.  Then the guests took it in turns to ask in their head for shapes to be drawn which Alice duly obliged.  The guests were also asking Alice to take the glass to certain people around the table which she did.  We did notice the KII would light up when questions were asked as if responding with a yes.

In my second group four guests wanted to spend time alone in the cellar, whilst the remainder tried the writing planchette.  Alice identified herself as being with us still.  We had a lot of random writing on the paper, nothing legible.  The guests were all taking it in turns to remove their fingers, the pencil still moving around the paper, even with just two left.  The guests downstairs were hearing noises around them, and with many random names being asked to spirit present, they established the spirit was called Barry, liked to be known as Baz.

For my third group three female guests chose to go downstairs, whilst the remaining guests tried the writing planchette.  Alice was no longer with us, but a male energy had stepped forward and tried moving the pencil a little.  Whilst this was happening the girls downstairs had a fright and came running upstairs screaming – they had heard a scratching noise next to them.  We finished the session with all of us going down to the cellar for a short while.

For the free session at the end, two female guests wanted to go back to the coffee shop cellar which we did.  We had the spirit of Baz with us and managed to ask a few questions.  Baz was in his forties and worked as a chef at the hotel cooking breakfasts.

Red Lion hotel hen night 9-3-2012

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Hen night ghost hunt at the Red Lion Hotel, Colchester – 9th March 2012.

As a team we were thoroughly looking forward to returning to the Red Lion as it was a brilliant ghost hunt the first time around, this time we were hoping for more of the same. We also came prepared with more of our kit, this time four infra-red remote cameras, which our guests can control throughout the night.

Colchester is a very interesting place, not least because about 30mins before we started a group walked by outside dressed as Cavaliers, random and strange!

The Hen party group had not done anything like this before and my introductory talk didn’t help matters when I told them that we would be predominately in the dark, some guests became scared at this.

However once we spilt into two groups, one heading for the haunted bedrooms, the other into the Parliamentary Restaurant and bar. Each group had a range of electronic kit, namely K2 metres and our ghost communicators, alongside some of our less technical kit, bouncy led balls.

After a while a young male energy 8-9 years old made himself known to me, he was dressed in a smart suit with knee length trousers, not a school uniform and he was from the 1850s and as I said at the time he would have grown up to be a gentleman as he was from a well to do family.

I also sensed another male energy who I met on our last visit, he was a grumpy old bugger as I put it. He mainly stayed near to the bar or public toilet entrance. The guests enjoyed their time communicating with the energy. The energy however didn’t like me the first time and he surely didn’t like me this time. The energy was about 70 years old, fairly short wearing a flat cap and smoking a pipe. Whilst Michelle was communicating with him and asking him to touch her, another guest who was in the restaurant felt a touch on her elbow. During Michelle’s questions I recorded some audio and a very clear EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena, a.k.a. ghost voice) was recorded.

http://youtu.be/Rw3oXpq-Ffs

One of the guests proclaimed his name was Robert. When asked if this was true the communicator responded with a “Yes” answer. The guest in question (Julie) stated that the energy held her hand when we were in the restaurant and that it was a pleasant experience for her. Although at this point Julie was rather tearful.

We also started using the writing planchette and some writing did occur, although the results were not conclusive. All the while Michelle was communicating to the spirit via our ghost communicator.

Our communicator device also flashed quite a lot which we have never seen before. The energy asked if I would move further away, which I duly complied with.

The energy also stood very close to Michelle and during this time our camera was out of focus, as soon as the energy stepped away from Michelle the camera refocused. Although when the energy returned and stood beside another guest (also Michelle) the camera went out of focus again.

Many guests saw a shadow within the restaurant which due to the lighting could have only come from within the restaurant (as the lights were outside on the wall) at the same time everyone heard a sound, although we have no idea what it could have been. Also one of our motion sensors was set off when no-one was near it.

Many guests commented that they felt uncomfortable in the ladies toilet, this seems to be a recurring feature of the ghost hunts that we have undertaken at the Red Lion hotel.

After a short break we headed for the cellar, which is one of the most interesting cellars I have encountered. On speaking to the manager he hold us that there is reputed to be a tunnel which goes to the Castle from these cellar, whether this is true or not remains a mystery.

As usual when a person walk heavily on the gratings outside the noise reverberates throughout the cellar, and when this happens all the guests jump!

A male energy was fairly quick to join us, his name was Archie de Marquis and he proceeded to give the guests some sense of his presence in the form of gentle touching and moving the guests arms.

Many guests felt pins and needles in their arms, cobweb sensations around their faces and numbness throughout their arms.

All in all a very enjoyable evening for the guests and us.

RED LION, COLCHESTER GHOST HUNT 21ST JANUARY 2012
KYM & LYNN’S REPORT

Our first group went to the Tudor Room, this is where the hotel holds meetings.  We started with a séance, and immediately we had spirit present.  The spirit of Jeffery at first came close to Rachel (guest). She could feel very cold behind her and was moved.  Spirit then moved around the whole circle, giving guests a cold sensation on their backs, and giving them some movement of their arms, or pushing/pulling them.  We could also sense the spirits of an elderly couple observing what we were doing.

We dropped hands for a short while and Jo (guest) sat in a chair at the back of the room, and whilst sitting there felt and heard what sounded like someone jumping in front of her.

We then all decided to sit very quietly around the large table with our hands on the table.  Immediately we had the spirit of a large male energy present who didn’t like us.  He gave his name of Henry James.  He was known to use this hotel to lure his prey of young women, raping and murdering them.  He was later hanged nearby for his wrong doings.  We could hear his footsteps moving up and down the room with various other unexplained noises around us.  One of the guests had a laser pen with a grid filter on it pointing towards one end of the room.  This displayed an array of small lights.  This did go off and on, we asked Henry if he was doing this to do it again which it did a couple of times.

For our second group of the night we all went to the cellar.  After starting a séance we immediately felt Henry had followed us.  We were looking towards the entrance of the cellar and could see shadows.  We then heard a very loud bang which made everyone jump.  On checking it out we established the noise came from people walking on the cellar door on the path above.  Marc & Kate (guests) went to stand underneath the cellar door in case it happened again.  The noise occurred again but much quieter and each time Marc & Kate could see the shadows of people walking over it.  Then there was a very loud bang again, which came from the cellar door but no shadows were seen.  We couldn’t explain this.  Marc stayed under the cellar door and whilst looking towards the entrance of the cellar he saw a beam of light on the floor.  This later corresponded with what Sean saw whilst filming later in the same place.

Lynn had also been feeling unwell, so she was put in the centre of the circle for protection.

For our third group of the night we went to the Coffee Shop downstairs, but after only seeing one light anomaly and the EMF going of just once we returned to the Tudor room.  Once in the Tudor room we settled around the table again and asked out for spirit to make some noises.  Immediately Marc (guest) felt a sharp stabbing pain in his left lower back.  I was seated next to him and the second time he had the pain I had it too but on my right lower back.  We had the EMF on between us which was lighting up.  The pains continued several times each of us feeling the pain at the same time.  Marc sensed a young lady had fallen to her death down the stairs outside the room, were we feeling her pain?

We were then all spilt into smaller groups and went to some of the rooms that were occupied by the team for the night.  Myself & Lynn took a small group to Room 9, and after settling down we started hearing noises around the room.  There were noises coming from the bathroom where the taps and shower had been found turned on earlier in the day.  We were also hearing knocks on the dressing table and footsteps around the room.  Lights were being seen too.

I then returned to this room with two guests and again we were hearing noises and saw two flashes of light.

Thank you to the Red Lion and all guests for making this a truly memorable night, I can’t wait to return, Kym

Red Lion Hotel, Colchester ghost hunt – 21-1-2012

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt – 21st January 2012

Ever since this venue had been booked for a ghost hunt my team and I were anxious to investigate this amazing location, a building which has plenty of history and known ghosts and the very fact that just about every room that we were staying in had some interesting history, usually macabre.

After many guests (and team) enjoyed another kind of spirit at the bar, for nerves obviously! We started by splitting the guests into two groups, one group stayed in the Tudor Room, the other, my group headed into The Parliament Restaurant where we let the guests use our equipment which consisted of K2 meters, dialogue meters and a tricorder, many hotspots were detected and spirit generally stepped forward to be noticed, the dialogue meters proved to be quite active and spirit was able to communicate with guests through basic yes and no questioning.

After a while I suggested that we hold a séance to try to get spirit to come forward and give the group some form of personal evidence. After a short amount of time a young boy called Timothy aged about 6-7 years old came forward, the group had already detected him via the tricorder and our other electronic equipment. Timothy was wearing a smart suit with short trousers, not a school uniform, and by his appearance he looked as if he came from the 1810s. He also brought his Sister with him, called Mary but she was rather shy. However between them they managed to move the arms of some of the guests. Hot and cold spots were also felt by the guests, but generally the energy seemed only to interact with those nearest to the kitchen.

There was also another female energy present, she was about 23 years old and was very shy, and she emerged from the kitchen area and stayed within an invisible boundary from the kitchen door to mid-way into the restaurant. She did not interact with the guests, but she could see that Timothy and Mary were interacting with us.

Throughout the séance I could sense a male energy sitting near the bar, he appeared to be very grumpy almost angry and he appeared to be dressed in clothing which I would associate as being from 1920s – 1930s. He did not want to interact with the group and stayed in the same place, muttering to himself.

After we broke the séance circle I conducted an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) experiment, which was stopped mid-flow due to a very noisy crowd making their way along the walkway just outside, but after we re-commenced the experiment there were two EVPs recorded. One which has been added to our website as it is very clear and the other which we cannot establish what exactly is being said.

You can listen to the clear one at http://youtu.be/XnZ-HpNAgvM

Many guests wandered over to where this disgruntled gentleman appeared to me and our electronic equipment picked up his energy. Some of the guests also photographed orbs in this location.

During this part of our investigation I set up the laser grid in the hope of seeing a spirit manifestation, as we have had some success with this in the past; however nothing notable happened at the time.

Some photographs were taken of the ceiling in the area which separates the bar and the restaurant and someone noticed that there seemed to be a woman’s face looking down through the window, but alas this turned out to be a mannequin! However during this time many people photographed what seemed to be a patch of brickwork on the ceiling, there was no brickwork. At the time the photographs looked very real however on examining the photos that we took and those taken by some of the guests we can conclude that it wasn’t brickwork, it was the wooden beam, which although doesn’t look anything like brickwork under certain circumstances the wood of the beam is reflected in the flash, which lightens the wood and since the beam is etched this looks like brickwork because the beam is out of focus. A mystery solved!

The second session we swapped the groups and my group headed into the café since the noise on the street had quietened down. We were assembled in the cellar of the café and although there were spirit energies present the activity was rather subdued. We did however hear some very loud bangs and crashes which sounded like they were emanating from right above us, but we know that we were the only people in this area. A male energy called David made himself known to the group via a electronic equipment, I could also sense him and he told me that he was involved in an RTA (Road Traffic Accident) in the 1980s. I thought that he was riding a motorcycle as he was dressed in leathers, but he answered via our dialogue meter that he was not on a motorcycle. What his fate was I do not know because he didn’t provide us with answers.

I found this café area strange, not because of the lack of spirit energy, but when I first visited The Red Lion this room seemed to be electric and I felt vitalised and full of energy, yet on the night the reverse was true, everyone including me felt drained and tired which was a huge disappointment as I was hoping for some great activity to take place in this room.

After this session we headed into the cellar which is situated on the other side of the public walkway. This was a very spooky place and the group was split. The majority of us were in the main cellar and a couple of guests were near to the beer cask entrance as the other group reported some strangeness when they were here.

A male energy joined us he was from Norfolk aged between 17 and 19 years old, called Phillip and seemed to be a very simple minded chap. He did not physically interact with the group instead we heard all manner of strange noises like groaning, whistling, loud bangs, knocking and all round weird noises. Every time something happened all the guests jumped, as these noises came with no warning and were not caused from people walking on the pavement above us, as we could hear everything that was happening on the street above, the noises in the cellar were coming from the floor or from within the hotel.

The group of people who stayed by the beer cask entrance heard and felt much more than they bargained for and on many occasions some very loud bangs and crashes were heard in this area and just after the noises the guests who were near that area screamed!

During this session a guest felt a party popper (which was stored there) hit his leg which made him jump! And two guests witnessed a Christmas tree (which was being stored) move in front of their eyes. Some of this session has been videoed and hopefully the noises especially the whistling have been recorded. Many orbs were definitely recorded.

The final session of the evening we allowed the guest to roam between the rooms, as my team were all staying overnight and we had the majority of the haunted rooms.

In room 7 which has many stories, a mist formation was photographed by a guest and an EVP was recorded, however the EVP is unintelligible and has been sent off for further analysis.

In room 6 we tried a scrying experiment and all guests who stood in front on the mirror could feel their features change, the spectators could see the results and on several occasions the spirit energy that people could see looked either scary or malicious which frightened some of the guests!

One of my team members who was staying in room 9 reported that when he entered the room the shower was on, much to his amazement. He was not responsible for this as when we arrived he just dumped his overnight bag in the room and then joined the rest of the group in the bar.

After the public investigation had finished, those who were staying in the hotel overnight, which included some guests as well as the team members decided to re-visit the cellar, as it was now much quieter on the streets of Colchester. As before some of us were near the beer cask drop and the rest of the group in the main part of the cellar. I stayed by the Christmas tree in the hope of seeing it move and to experience some of the noises which seem to be related to this old opening. We heard many strange noises here but during the séance which was being conducted in the main cellar I felt that there was an unwelcome spirit energy and although this energy was doing what was asked of him – gentle movements etc. – I felt that one of the guests would soon need my help. I thought I knew which guest it was going to be as this guest (who will remain nameless) has had a similar experience at another investigation of mine.

When I entered the room the guest that needed help was Andy, his partner Wendy was scared of him and said that she felt that Andy was looking menacing and threatening even though Andy was feeling generally fine, he could feel an unusual force or energy around him and I realised what was in progress and stepped in to help Andy, and ultimately Wendy! The spirit energy that was responsible was called Adrian Muller and he was able to push Andy with great force whilst I was standing directly behind Andy, which was probably just as well because otherwise I think Andy would have fallen over.

After giving Andy some much needed energy in the form of emergency healing and placing him in the circle the feeling that he had and his appearance to the group had changed, Wendy could now look at him without being scared!

This event was a huge success and the guests thoroughly enjoyed themselves, we as a team also had a fantastic night and we cannot wait to return to The Red Lion Hotel as I believe there is so much more to experience at this venue.

We have recorded many hours of video footage which is currently being analysed for audio-visual anomalies; any results will be published on our website in due course.

Our next public event at The Red Lion is scheduled for 14th April 2012 and tickets are available from our website. http://www.ghosthuntevents.co.uk

This venue is also available for private events (birthdays, hen nights etc.), for more information please see our website.

I would like to thank all the staff, especially Warren the General Manager for making this event run smoothly and Jason the Night Porter who although sceptical helped us with the event into the early hours.
