The Keep

http://www.ghosthuntevents.co.uk/the-keep.php

History of The Keep
The Keep Military Museum in Dorchester. Dorset was completed in 1879, it was designed to resemble a Norman Castle, and is built of Portland stone which gives it a white appearance.

The Keep was originally the gatehouse for the Depot Barracks of the Dorsetshire Regiment as well as the County Armoury.
The Depot Barracks were the administrative centre for the Dorsetshire Regiment and its centre for recruitment and training. The Depot carried out this function between 1879 and 1958 with only one break. This was during World War Two when the barracks was used by the 701st Ordnance Light Maintenance Company and the 1st Quartermaster Company of the American Armed Forces.

Devizes Town Hall

http://www.ghosthuntevents.co.uk/devizes-town-hall.php

History of Devizes Town Hall
The Town Hall in Devizes, Wiltshire was built in 1808, replacing a Yarn Hall built in 1575.

The lock-up is the oldest part of the building, dating back to around 1650, this is the dungeon below Devizes Town Hall and is where miscreants spent the night before being paraded in front of magistrates the following morning.

We have access to the Lock-Up, Council Chamber, Assembly Hall and Cheese Hall.

Ghosts of the Town Hall
The Town Hall is reputedly haunted by a ghostly lady who has been seen often on the stairwell. Visitors to the building and staff have complained of feeling uncomfortable in the lock up area (cells) and the sense of being watched.

The Mayor’s Parlour – Pendulums, Ouija, Writing Planchette

At the start of my first session we began by using the pendulums, and each guest had movement although some were taking longer to get going than others. Most of the guests established their yes and no directions and were communicating with spirit either out loud or in their heads.

We didn’t have much movement with the glass when doing Ouija, as it seemed spirit did not want to communicate in this way and kept moving the glass to goodbye.

We did however have a very successful session with the writing planchette, as it started moving more or less straight away, and was continuously doing so around the paper. We kept asking spirit to draw something for us or write their name or initial, and when we looked at what had been drawn, it looked like a bird. We also had a lot of activity on the ghost pros, and it was as though two different spirits were arguing with each other, as one kept contradicting the other. During this time, we started to hear taps on the table next to us where no one was sitting. I then asked spirit to copy my taps, to which it immediately did so. Guests were amazed by this, and a few of them also did some taps, to which spirit once again responded.

In another of my sessions spirit drew the letter J and the letter I with the writing planchette.

During my final session we contacted a spirit named Robert via the Ouija. He told us he was from 1865 and had a wife called Gill and a 6-year-old son, Anthony. He then told us that his son was strangled by a man called George, so Robert killed George and then killed himself by running under a horse and cart. He said that George was always with him tormenting him, and that they are both bad men. We asked Robert if he had a message for us, and he spelt out “will see you”. When asked if he meant he will see us in the cells downstairs, as this is where we were planning to go afterwards, he responded with yes.

At the end of the night we had a free session so we went down to the cells, and myself and Kym held a séance with the guests. Some of the guests including myself were being pushed slowly to the right and a couple of people’s arms were raised. We also heard some whistles, which sounded like they were coming from one of the cells.

Rye Castle (Ypres Tower) ghost hunt 25th April 2015
Rye, East Sussex

Area: Women’s Tower/Prison
Equipment: Writing Planchette, Glass Work, Table Tipping, Dowsing Rods, Pendulums

Group B – We started with table tipping, and could feel the table trying to move.  Some guests were feeling a tingly sensation under their hands whilst touching the table.  Two guests felt they were being touched on their shoulder at the same time.  But with only slight movement we switched to glasswork.  Ted (curator) was sensing a familiar female spirit nearby, and he was being pushed/pulled throughout, but with no movement on the glass we tried the writing planchette.  Again had no movement on the planchette but could feel the table gently moving again.  Whilst asking for the table to move, Ted & I could sense it was a child trying to move it.  As not much more movement we tried the pendulums & dowsing rods.  Everyone was able to ask spirit some questions, and yes it was a small boy aged around six.  He knew the female spirit, was a mother figure but not his mother.  Ted had the names Emma & John given to him.

Group A – We started with table tipping and the table started rocking immediately.  Asking spirit to move the table to show a yes & no, we established the spirit was a male jailor.  He was the nicer jailor, who didn’t like the other jailor.  The table would move however we asked, lifting a particular way, spinning, and walking towards the door when asked.  We asked spirit to lift/move the table to show us where is was standing, and it lifted towards the corner of the room next to us.  Asking spirit if he would like to communicate with us using the glass or writing planchette he chose the glass.  Again the glass started moving straight away, in very fast circles around the table.  We asked spirit to take the glass towards where he was, the glass now moved towards the door.  Ted commented he often stands in those two places when here.  The jailor answered a few more questions:  he worked in the main building in 1840, the women’s tower was built when he was here, and he was scared of the other jailor who was his boss and not nice to the women.  He was aged 34 and died of natural causes, and was buried in Rye church graveyard.  He was married with no children.  We asked spirit to draw using the glass, his first initial.  He drew what looked like a M or W.  Moving the glass to yes he confirmed it was the letter M.  We asked spirit to try and tell us his name and one guest had the name Matthew, the spirit confirmed this was his name.  We then tried the writing planchette and the pen/planchette started moving in lots of random circles.  We asked again for spirit to draw his initials, which looked like M – O or D – S.  Louise (guest) was feeling unwell during this and had to sit down, and didn’t start feeling better until she left the area.  We did try table tipping again, and again had lots of tipping and spinning.  We also tried pushing the table back down when it was lifted up, and with all taking it in turns was amazed by the strength we had to use to push the table back down on to the floor.  When Ted tried he was unable to push the table back down.  This amazed us all, and we could not believe the power/force behind it.

I love Rye Castle – a fantastic venue, with something different happening every time we go!

Shire Hall – 24th January 2015 (Wayne)

Friday, April 24th, 2015

Shire Hall ghost hunt 24th January
Hereford, Herefordshire

Courtroom 2 and Cells with Sean

Session 1
We used ghost pros, Mel meters and SB7

We handed out ghost pros to the guests who were quite happy to go off to investigate the areas.
Near the toilet at the end of the cell corridor the guests managed to get information of a male spirit in his 30’s with a horse and cart who was hung, his wife didn’t live long after his death, they also had children and claimed to be together as a family.

In the cell areas we had good activity with guests and team experiencing feelings, smells and being physically touched.
Sean and Wayne had feelings in cell 4 of dizziness and headaches but only in this cell
Wayne used the SB7 in cell 4 and heard the name “Brian” and shortly after “get out!” came through and at the same time felt a brushing across the left ear while Sean at exactly the same time whilst standing in the doorway of cell 4 felt his shoulder being grabbed.
Paula felt “cobwebs” across her face in the cell corridor near the toilet and also noticed towards the end of the session that cell 2 had its panic alarm light on which we then turned off.

Session 2
We used ghost pros, Mel meters and SB7

Again we handed out ghost pros to the guests who incidentally we all female and in their early 20’s. Ghost pros were lighting straight away so we split the guests into pairs and put each pair in to a cell and shut the doors. They all had some communication on the ghost pros.
Sean then brought all the guests back to cell 4 and asked them to stand in a circle to build energy, which had an effect on a spirit in cell 3 as it seemed as though it was a male spirit trying to push past Wayne and Paula who were standing in the doorway to cell 4 to see the female guests. As Paula was filming she said that she noticed a feeling of tingling down the back of both of her legs and felt a cold spot behind her with goose bumps on her right hand side, Wayne was also feeling the cold spot on his left between them and noticed Paula’s hair being played with by an unseen force in the light given off by the LCD screen.
Next we noticed that cell 2’s panic light had come back on which we all investigated on each of the cells and came to the conclusion that it was impossible for the panic buttons to be accidentally pushed or leaned on and at the time we noticed the light being on none of us were near the button inside the cell.
Sean and Wayne were again both being affected by spirit in cell 4 with dizziness.
We then ventured to courtroom 2 where we had ghost pro activity once more with the name Robert or Bob being very prominent. Tapping and creaking was being heard by us all in the gallery at the back of the room, again none of us were in that area at the time.
Loud footsteps were heard and felt through the floor walking away from and down the stairway to the cells from the accused chair.

Session 3
We used ghost pros, Mel meters,SB7 and Ovilus 3

Handing out the ghost pros we had immediate activity again in cell 4 with communication from a female spirit called Veronica. She died in the 1800’s and had 1 child, she was in love with an inmate but although she carried on coming back to the lady and gentlemen guests that were both holding ghost pros that she was communicating through we didn’t manage to get any more information about her.
We then tried the Ovilus 3 device in cell 4 which amazingly gave us 3 names which were Nick, Jim and Veronica. We tried to establish which spirit was giving us these names and if Nick or Jim was the inmate that Veronica was in love with but had no more communication through this device.

We then moved the session into courtroom 2.
Wayne used the SB7 in the stairwell from the accused chair to the cells with the couple that were talking to Veronica. We established from this spirit box session that there were 5 spirits with us and that both Veronica and Jim were 2 of the spirits present as they said their names clearly and with tone through this device.
Creaking was again heard from the gallery at the back of courtroom 2 with none of us in that area.

Police Cells Museum – 8th November 2014 (Kym)

Thursday, January 8th, 2015

Police Cells Museum 8th November 2014
Brighton

Area: Men & Women’s Cells
Equipment: Ouija, Dowsing Rods, Pendulums
Group B – We all explored the cells briefly, and one guest felt a finger touch her throat, quite forcefully.  We then all started using the dowsing rods and pendulums to find out which spirits were with us.  One guest felt she had a teenage boy with her aged 17 however when we started using the ouija it was a young boy called Harry aged 7.  He had come here in 1934 with his parent who had been arrested.  He only stayed a short while before taking the glass to goodbye.
We then had another spirit wishing to talk with us.  He was a Prison Warden, from Poland, and had worked here for 5/6 years in 1929.  He was 23 years old with the initials V K.  Asked if he had affected the female guest earlier touching her throat, he said yes.  Asked if he had strangled someone, he said yes but was sorry for what he had done.  Whilst we were all in the cell we heard footsteps in the corridor but no-one there.  We were also feeling cold spots around us in the corridor, and some guests saw a light.
We did explore the ladies cell next door, and as some guests went to walk into the last cell, they felt a cold draught pass them and the flag hanging above the door was swaying.
Group A – Starting with the rods & pendulums we had a male prisoner with us.  We tried the Ouija but no movement.  As one of the guests from the previous group was sensing the name of a spirit in the womens cells we decided to try the Ouija there.  Although we had no movement with the glass, we were feeling cold on our legs and hands touching the glass, feeling tingling sensations in different places, and could smell cigarette smoke.  Lots of creaking and taps under the table too.
Area: Court Room
Equipment: Writing Planchette & Table Tipping
Group B – Guests Lesley, Paula & Louise started with the automatic writing and immediately the pen started moving around the paper.  They had lots of random writing but did get the initial J, and numbers 8 and 0.  We also heard a bell ring near us but couldn’t find anything to identify it.  Meanwhile near the entrance guests Karen, Justin, Paul & Terri started with table tipping.  None of them had tried this before and were literally amazed when the table started moving, more so when I stepped away and left them to it.  They all knew each other so trusted each other not to manipulate the table.  The also took it in turns with just two of them at a time and it still moved on command.  With four of them touching the table they had it spinning on one leg.  I then swapped the groups so they could try both activities, and whilst I was with the four guests doing automatic writing we could all hear heavy footsteps walking around both groups.  We heard one particular loud noise and when I went to investigate it sounded like a big heavy bench sliding across the floor, and when looking one of them was not in line with all the others.  The guests doing the table tipping felt they had a female spirit with them, the table was moving very gently, as if the female spirit was dancing with them.  Just as we were finishing a guests KII started lighting up to red.
Group A – Guests Andrew, Karen & Sue started with the table tipping and had a lovely female spirit with them, possibly the same as the previous session.  She was able to move the table everywhere she was asked, even when all the guests turned their hands palm side up.  With the other group the picture drawn looked like a male fist pointing.  Cold spots were felt and noises heard by all.  I swapped the groups over and just as I was starting with the table tipping Mark was suddenly surprised to see a  shadow behind me.  Both groups again had activity immediately, Christmas trees being drawn on the paper which was relevant to the guests, and the table was spinning a lot, and would continue to rock with just Mark & Katie.
This was a great venue, with fantastic guests, and lots of activity in every session.

Rye Castle ghost hunt – 10th October 2014

Tuesday, November 11th, 2014

Rye Castle ghost hunt 10th October 2014
Rye, East Sussex

It is always with a little bit of sadness  when we come to end of the year, as this was the last investigation at Rye until April 2015 and often the last event is memorable for lots of reasons. This event was no different.

As usual I headed to the first floor of the Keep and started to hold a séance circle. Within a few minutes we were joined by Philip aged in his early 40s, quite a portly gent who gave the impression that he locked prisoners up.

Arm movement was felt by the guests as Philip went around the circle and affected the guests one by one, some guests were pulled backwards and other forwards. As is becoming relatively normal, the people either side of me were being pulled down to the floor. The people opposite me were pulled backwards and onto a table.

However the more time that passed the feeling was that there was more than one spirit responsible and then I heard a spirit say his name; Ezekiel was the name the spirit gave which didn’t correspond to the person I saw. The person I saw was not nice and possibly a murderer as some of the guests were sensing some discomfort around their necks. At the same time other guests saw shadows and movement in the shadows especially in the direction of the terrace doorway.

The second group, we started as normal and once again Philip returned and started to move the arms of the guests but once all guests had been moved at least once I saw Ezekiel and once again guests started to feel odd. I decided at this point to end the séance just in case things got out of hand (which has happened in the past).

At one point one guest was lying down and their head was banged on the floor. Tasha (guest) who was standing in one of the cells felt pinching on the back of her legs.

Many times we all heard a strange tapping sound, like someone rapping their fingers on a wooden desk or cabinet.

After the guests chose what activity they wished to do and I joined some in the Women’s Tower who were having some mixed responses with glass divination. However once I stepped into the room the energy levels increased and the guests had useful movements and answers to their questions. Thankfully I didn’t need to touch the glass.

This was a great ghost hunt and we cannot wait to return in 2015.

Old Police Cells Museum ghost hunt (Sue) -1-2-2014

The Old Police Cells 1st February 2014
Brighton

This was my first visit to police cells so I was really looking forward to this investigation. I was based upstairs in The Council Chambers. When I first arrived I went in alone to set up the room and sort out any equipment I would be using. I kept having the feeling I was being watched and found myself looking behind me. The Chambers is a huge very impressive room with an adjuring room to the side that although a lot smaller and not as grand gave me an uncomfortable feeling.

My first group was the famous Boo Club. On entering the room we heard a noise and discovered the dowsing rods that were placed on a chair had suddenly appeared on the floor, there is no reason this should have happened and we did ask spirit to push them on the floor again but this never happened. Firstly we tried the Ouija board and some glass work but unfortunately we had very little movement on the glass. As these guests have been on many events I wanted to try and see what they could sense and feel. We spread out and stood or sat in different areas of the room. We began calling out and I asked spirit to make the guests feel how they had once felt when they was in this room. We did get some great results with several people feeling the same thing at the same time. Jason (Team) and Rusty (Guest) both said they had a metal taste in their mouth. This indicates they had got the taste of blood. Later on two guests both said they felt they had bitten through their tongue. Audrey (Guest) was drawn to a particular chair and when she was sat here she said she felt very emotional and upset but also that she had the feeling that she just didn’t care, almost as if whatever was going to happen would happen and she had no control over the outcome. She was also feeling cold spots down her right side. Audrey was picking up on how the person had felt when they once sat there. Some on the guests and me were feeling sick, light headed and dizzy especially when they were stood by the window.  Most people generally felt agitated and uncomfortable with a knotted feeling in their stomach. Darren and Mark (Guests) decided to sit in the area of the accused. They both felt very upset and emotional when sat here so much so that Mark said he felt like he wanted to cry. As the boys had had such strong feelings in the accused area three of the female guests sat in the same area. However they felt completely comfortable here so it was only affecting the men. Darren (Guest) chose to sit in the Judge’s chair. Myself and a few of the others guests stood close to him. We could feel cold breezes sweep across our hands and different parts of our bodies. There was no draught causing this. Darren said it felt a lot colder above his head than it did at waist height and when we used the digital thermometer there was a 6 degrees difference. Which is quite odd that it felt 6 degrees colder above his head than by his waist, normally heat rises so this did have us all intrigued.   The whole time the vigil was taking place we had almost constant activity with the Ghost Box Pros lighting up and flashing once for yes or twice for no to our questions. We heard a groaning noise coming from the adjuring room next door. But the most impressive noise we heard was the sound of a chair being scrapped across the floor. Jo (Guest) tried to see if any of the chairs had moved and tried to replicate this noise by dragging a chair but it was carpeted floors in this room and we could not recreate this noise and we could not find any chair that had been moved. Spirit gave Jo (Guest) the name of Michael, liked to be called Mickey aged 55yrs who had been sent to prison, although he would not tell her exactly what he had done just something bad.

Second Vigil – Group A

In my second vigil I was joined by my fellow team members Sean & Kerry.  We started off in the Chambers / Court Room but I was drawn to the adjuring room next door.  We began an Ouija board session and almost immediately the glass began to move around the table but could not spell out anything that made sense. Establishing the male spirit could not spell we got the spirit to move towards my torch for Yes of towards the triangle that was placed on the other side of the board on the table for No. We all took it in turns to ask the spirit questions and he seemed to respond better when the two male guests asked the questions. The Male spirit didn’t really want to answer any of our questions but was very happy drawing shapes circles, square, straight line etc. with the glass. He had once worked here. The energy on the glass changed and became very gentle. I instantly see a little girl aged 6 with brown bobbed hair, chin length with a fringe. She was wearing a brown shirt, white blouse type top and something was tied around her waist. She had no shoes on and her feet and legs looked dirty and grubby. Our spirit child was called Elizabeth and she liked moving the glass. Sean (Team) went off to get a ball that lights up. We threw the ball and asked Elizabeth if she would be able to move the ball for us but unfortunately she didn’t move the ball (This would take a lot of energy for a small child to do this) but she said she could see the ball. She had always lived her. Whilst we were in this room we did hear several noises.

Third Vigil –Group B

My last vigil was very similar to the first. We started off in the court room. I sat guests in the same places as I had with my first group and some of their experiences were very similar. The male guest stood by the window felt sick. A lot of the guests felt very uncomfortable, uneasy and just generally wanted to leave this room. When a guest was sat in the same chair as Audrey had sat, she also felt cold spots down her side and also felt someone was stood behind her. The Ghost Box pros were lighting up and responding well to our questions. We moved to the adjuring room next door and had a little activity on the glass but not as much as my second group had experienced. But it was all women on the glass and previously it had responded better when the men asked questions. (I later learned that women would not have been allowed into this room it would have only been men) We heard a lot of noises and one brave guest went off and stood on her own to see if she could figure where the noises were coming from. After a few minutes she came back saying how strange it was as she could hear the noise but couldn’t figure what was making the noise. The session came to a end and one of the guests said to me she was glad she was leaving as this whole area just made her feel so uneasy and anxious she also kept rubbing her stomach.

An interesting evening with many guests having very strong feelings. Most people did not want to stay in these rooms and wanted to just get out. Some good photographs were also taken with strange mists appearing in the photos. I look forward to returning to the police cells in the future as this place has left me intrigued and wanting to find out more.

Special thanks to all the guests. Till next time.

Old Police Cells Museum ghost hunt – 01-02-2014

Sunday, February 2nd, 2014

The Old Police Cells Museum 1st February 2014
Brighton, East Sussex

On the previous two occasions that we have visited the Old Police Cells the activity has been really great but sporadic with some people getting lots more activity than others and different rooms having different sensations.

However this evening that changed for the better, lots of activity was experienced by the guests in all areas, albeit some of the activity was exceptional.

I had chosen the sub-sub-basement for two reasons, firstly this was the most interesting area to me as it is quite a big space and there are quite a few “active” areas and secondly it was also the coolest area, the temperature down here was a pleasant 15 degrees Celsius. Upstairs it was closer to 25.

On previous occasions there have been two areas where guests have stood on their own and unusual things have happened to them, nothing sinister but also unexpected. I held all my sessions in this area.

The spirit that we present here remained throughout the whole evening with every group, one was a male spirit energy called Tommy in his late-30s who was about 5’10” in height. He also wore a “warehouse” style brown three-quarter length jacket and seemed to be from the early 1900s. He never actually told me the year but I assumed this based on the way he spoke and acted.

The second was a very well dressed man with a large stature, he never told me his name, as he seemed disinterested in telling me. He was about 6’ in height and of a portly build, and he had a full length bushy beard. Wearing a smart three piece black suit, he had the air of authority about him and at first I thought he was a councillor however it later transpired he was a council solicitor who wrote law reports and documents for the council. The area in which we were standing was where all the law report books were stored, some dating back to the early 1800s.

The first group to this area we started a séance circle and almost immediately after I asked for Tommy to move us in some way, Mark (guest) was pushed backwards against the shelving and he stated that he could not lift himself back upright. At around the same time both of my hands started to lift (which is nothing unusual, as spirit usually start with me) Jeanette (guest) however was not expecting this as she was holding my right hand. Kerry (GHE team) who was on my left wasn’t surprised and very quickly Tommy was able to move our arms into more uncomfortable positions!

As Tommy became more confident and more adept at moving us he progressed the activity around the circle with other guests having their hands moved or being gently swayed or rocked, some people were pushed backwards into more of the book shelves.

Whilst all this was happening several of us heard some odd noises, these ranged from footfall sounds to the sound of various things being clicked or dropped and one particularly loud noise which everyone heard, sounded like a pebble being rolled across the floor.

Several times the two people either side of me were dragged (by our arms) to the floor and my hands being dragged across the floor, fortunately there was (this time) a piece of paper on the floor which protected my knuckles from scraping across the floor.

Carl (GHE Team & Camera) was supposed to be filming this session but due to a problem with the camera it just didn’t want to work, so Carl was standing at the end of the shelving looked back towards us. Many time he heard the sound of something around him and every time this was due to the well-dressed solicitor spirit. On one occasion Carl felt a prod in the back of neck. This is something which has happened to other guests who have stood in this spot on previous investigations.

After we finished the séance I asked everyone to stand in between the book shelves as on previous occasions people have felt physical sensations. It is always much better in my opinion when people are not part of a séance circle to be touched or moved as the guests generally cannot find any logical reason for this.

Those guests who stood with their backs near to the wall facing out all felt the same sensation. This was the sensation of being pulled back which can be quite unnerving when standing in total darkness!

Whilst the guests were taking turns to stand in these areas noises kept being heard from the only entrance to this room. It was unfortunate that this wasn’t recorded but this is relatively normal, when good activity happens it is rare to have it filmed.

The second group to this area, we started the séance circle in much the same area, Tommy once again joined us very quickly as did the Solicitor spirit, although he stood closer this time. The two people standing either side of me (both called Emma) felt their arms being gently lifted which surprised them both a little as neither was expecting this to happen so quickly. This very quickly progressed around certain people in the circle and then Tommy started to rock, sway and push people which they were not expecting because all of sudden people would feel their balance go and then would fall into the person standing next to them.

Once again some of the guests were pushed backwards into the book shelves and Emma (the one on my right) was dragged by our arms to the floor again, however this time the sheet of paper wasn’t underneath my hand and my knuckles were dragged across the floor. This wasn’t painful to start with but became painful!

Tommy quickly tired of trying to move some people, however the Solicitor chap stepped in and started to move my arm in a purposeful method (Emma, on the right). I asked the guests to then use our arms as a pointer to ask simple yes and no questions. So a yes was pointing at one person, a no another person.

Several questions were asked by the guests and this is when it transpired that this spirit was a Solicitor, he also didn’t like his job as he found it boring. We also found out that he was a local man who in his day lived in the countryside (now this is part of Brighton) and that he was married and had two boys. Apparently he lived a happy life, but just didn’t enjoy his job.

After quickly looking through the wash room area so that the guests could read some of the macabre stories about the Museum and the murders and criminals who were imprisoned here we finished the session.

The third group, who have attended numerous ghost hunts with us and are collectively called “The Boo Club” I didn’t need to explain what we were about to do. However several people who will remain anonymous were very jumpy looking down to the entrance of the room, they kept saying that it “freaked them out” and none of them really wanted to stand with their backs to the doorway. Both spirits were still present and very quickly started to move and lift our arms, some of the positions were more painful than others and the spirit were able to move the majority of people. Rusty (guest & new member of the Boo Club) stood next to me because he wanted to experience the movements, the rest of the guests had no problem with this as they knew what was going to happen!

Very quickly the whole group were being manipulated and arms twisted and entangled with each other and people forced to move into extremely painful positions, at one point two guests (who usually stand together, Mark & Darren) who this time stood far away from each other each ended up on the floor, both of them were pushed down wards by their heads and both at one point but at different times had their heads touching the floor. Several times various people were pushed into others and at one point most of us were on the floor on top of someone else, this proved to be a lot of amusement for Carl (who was now successfully filming) and the two spirit energies.

In a rare moment when were we all standing upright, after being pulled one by one around the circle, we all heard a loud crash of paperwork, everyone in the room was suddenly very awake and alert and Carl was swearing. This was because a box file of paperwork which was on the top shelf above Carl suddenly fell or jumped from its position on the shelf and landed on the opposite side on the gangway (so really not a fall, as things don’t fall in arcs, unless pushed). Even though it happened in front of Carl it wasn’t recorded because the box file fell above the camera’s view point. Which is a great shame, but you can definitely hear the sound and the resulting swearing on the video!

After we finished getting up from the floor for the fifth or sixth time, I suggested that people stand at the end of the gangways to see if something would happen to them, like the first group. The majority of people who stood in a particular spot all got pushed or pulled, some quite violently, which did unnerve them.

After briefly spending time in the washroom part of this area, as there was a spirit in the wash rooms who didn’t like us and impolitely asked us to leave. He was a Policeman from the 1970s who seemed to have the belief that he was a Policeman “do as I say” not “what I do” personality.

After our controlled sessions finished all guests were allowed then to venture throughout the building and hold their own ghost hunt or participate in activities they enjoyed during our controlled sessions and as always we let them use our ghost hunting equipment.

This was a very enjoyable ghost hunt with the majority of the guests having some form of physical paranormal activity happen to them.

The Old Police Cells Museum ghost hunt – 3-8-2013

Friday, September 6th, 2013

The Old Police Cells Museum ghost hunt 3rd August 2013
Brighton, East Sussex

When choosing the date for this ghost hunt we didn’t check to see what was on in Brighton to see if it would impact us in any way. However as it turned out this was Brighton Pride weekend, which had we known beforehand we probably wouldn’t have booked it because of the likelihood of a lot of loud noise and music playing all night because The Old Police cells museum is situated at the Town Hall which is in the middle of Brighton, however it turned out that it didn’t make any difference as little of the noise could be heard in the basement of the Town Hall and the traffic wasn’t a problem either, in fact it was harder to get out of Brighton than to get in.

This event was also a little strange because normally our Locations team visit every venue before the event so that areas can be allocated to team members, but because the preceding two months were very hectic for our Locations team, no visit was made and thus the investigation team were going in blind not knowing the building nor where the interesting areas were. However being professionals we quickly toured the building on arrival and separated the areas for the investigation.

Carl (GHE team) chose the Female cells and I chose the Male cells to start our investigation.

Whilst I was unlocking all the cells I noticed that certain cells had very uneasy and oppressive feelings and it had nothing to do with the mannequins placed in the cells, some were quite unusual!

As I reached the last cell I noticed that a spirit energy called Gerald was standing at the other end of the corridor, he was a jailer and carried a bunch of keys which was similar to the keys that I was holding. Gerald was aged in his early 50s, quite a portly chap who uttered the words “be careful” as he swung his jailer keys. What he was talking about remains unknown.

Whilst the majority of the guests were standing at the same end of the corridor as me apart from one person who was in a cell we all heard a metal clanking sound which we all assumed was Bob (guest) as he was in the cell, however when we asked Bob what the noise was he said that he had not heard the sound let alone made it. On inspecting the cell where Bob was nothing in this cell could have been responsible for the noise that we heard.

After spending some time in each of the cells, the general consensus was that two cells everyone felt uncomfortable when inside on their own but when another person joined them the feeling dissipated.

After leaving an audio recorder in one of the cells, one in which many of us believed the door would rattle of its own accord we moved down the hall to the washroom area. On analysis of this audio file nothing interesting or unexplained was recorded and certainly no EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voices).

Whilst in the toilet end of this area strange feelings were felt by many people, mostly that of a threatening feeling but once again this was only felt when a small amount of people were in the room, as more people entered the feelings disappeared. This room wasn’t a small room and had nothing to do with being claustrophobic as the ceiling was about 12 feet high.

Some guests stayed in this area whilst other joined me in what I shall call the library as it was full of old books, some dating from the 1800s.

Andy (guest) saw a white light on his shirt and dismissed this as he thought it was from a smoke alarm, however later when the rest of the group joined us this happened again although no-one could find a source of the light.

There was a strange spirit in this area, his name was Silus who was aged in his 80s and told me he passed in 1908. However Silus seemed more than just a random spirit, he seemed very knowledgeable and was able to answer some truly difficult questions posed by the guests and he was able to show me an incident that happened to one of the guests many years ago that started this persons quest to find out more about ghosts/spirits. The guest confirmed to me that what I described was in fact what had happened to him.

Whilst Andy was standing in a particular area he felt a sharp pain in his neck, to me it looked like Silus had “stabbed” Andy with a screwdriver or a sharp implement shaped like a screwdriver. Silus also made Emily (guest) feel dizzy and she reported that her arms felt odd.

As another guest entered the room we all heard a cough, the guest didn’t hear a cough nor had he coughed himself, later when the same guest excited the room he too heard a couch coming from in front of him but there was no one in that room as we were all in the library. We didn’t hear that cough either.

The second group we started in the Male cells as before and I was keen to know if these guests felt the same about certain cells as the first group, which after much deliberation from the guests they all agreed one cell felt the same as what the first group felt. Although they didn’t feel that there was a second unpleasant cell.

Some of the guests wanted to dress up as police officers and had an amusing time doing so. As we were about to leave this area to go to the washroom area one guest thought she saw a person or the shadow of a person at the end of the cell block behind the gate. This is the same area that I first saw Gerald from the first group.

In the library area some of the guests happened to be standing where Andy from the first group stood and one by one everyone that stood in this area felt a touch on their head or the their neck even though they were expecting it we continued to talk about other things as to take their minds off the incident and then to their surprise when the guests were least expecting something they all felt a touch. Silus (the spirit from the first group) was responsible.

When asking for spirit to make a sound Karen (guest) heard a “Whoo” sound, which could have come from outside but the first group also heard exactly the same sound in exactly the same place but there was a good hour’s difference in time.

Back in the main washroom I held a séance and we were joined by a spirit energy called Simon, he was able to push and sway some people and move their arms on command. Some of the guests including me felt very warm during this séance, other on the other side of the circle opposite me felt very cold.

During the free time (where guests may hold their own ghost hunt or vigil with our equipment) a lot of us were in the washroom area and Carl (GHE Team) had the name Harry repeating in his head over and over. The spirit that was with us might have been called Harry, but I don’t know because he wouldn’t talk to me. This spirit was about 19 or 20 years old, quite skinny with blonde hair and freckles. Whilst I was describing him to the guests some saw a strange light, as did I but none of us could decide what we had actually seen, although the light came from the place where this spirit stood. This spirit didn’t do anything of a physical nature to any guest so we all moved off to different areas of the building.

This was a very enjoyable ghost hunt and one in which many of the guests had some form of paranormal activity happen to them, mostly physical that defied any rational or obvious explanation. This location we will be happy to return to as hopefully more activity will present itself as some of the areas that were available to us I didn’t visit and will look forward to that on our next visit.
