The SBox

The SBox is a spirit box scanner, similar in nature to a SB-7 Spirit box except this device can record the sweeps and play them back.

Like the SB7 the direction and speed of the frequency scan can be changed, it also does AM as well as FM radio. It has a rechargeable battery, built-in torch and headphone socket and it can be used as a Bluetooth speaker making this piece of kit very versatile.

When using the SBox if it detects a spike when scanning it will stay on that frequency a bit longer in case there is a voice trying to get through. This will hopefully allow multiple words or a full sentence to be heard rather than just one word.

The SBox uses a micro SD card to record (max 32Gb)

We have used this SBox just a few times and it has shown some very promising results and we cannot wait to use it in places which have been incredibly good for spirit box or EVP recordings in the past.
It is too early to say what the pros or cons of the device is, we need to test it some more. But it will be an improvement when trying to record a spirit box session, as previously we would have to have a voice recorder recording the spirit box, this will save having two devices. Whether we record any more spirit voices or it increases the chances of spirit communication remain to be seen.

This normally retails for about $120 / £105 and is available from Ghost Stop or Spirit Shack

Spirit Box SB7

P-SB7 Spirit Box ITC Research Device if used as intended it can enable real-time communication with spirits.
The idea and the research suggests that the generated white noise in the gaps of the radio signals enables spirits to talk to us and answer meaningful questions. These are often called Ghost boxes or Frank’s boxes too.

Gary Galka designed this version of the spirit box based on his own research and the tragic death of his daughter who he wanted to talk to from the other side. The ITC stands for Instrumental Trans-communication.

It is the white noise that’s important not the radio waves. We use the device on the FM band scanning at 100ms in reverse because as it picks up radio stations it picks up little snippets of voice, if we were scanning forwards then these could be misinterpreted (For example if you asked “What day is it?” There’s a far chance that one radio station may say the day of the week), this is still true in reverse but there is no chance that you would hear “Sunday” because everything is backwards.

The older models were better because they didn’t receive as many radio signals as the newer versions of the device. However the newer devices have noise cancelling built in on the FM band.
The spirit box really needs an external speaker to hear the responses clearly, or for the person to wear headphones.

The is a really useful and portable piece of kit and over the years we have had some really good responses to questions. For best results you can use a faraday cage or wallet which stops the radio waves from getting to the spirit box, so there is no chance you can hear anything that is broadcast on the radio. The best ever was when a customer asked “what’s my postcode?” and he received a full and accurate answer to which he replied “What colour underwear am I wearing?” Again he had an immediate answer, but this time he had to excuse himself and go and check. The spirit was correct!

There is an SB-11 a so-called improvement, but in reality it didn’t work as well, it was very expensive and not very portable due to its size. Many paranormal investigators and ghost hunters don’t use the SB-11, the SB-7 is the preferred device.

When we bought ours, they cost about £45-55 from either Amazon or eBay although you could buy them direct from ghost shops in the US (you still can, look at ghoststop.com) and the current price is anywhere between £65 and £75. Sometimes it can be cheaper to buy the item from a US store and have it shipped to the UK as some UK sellers have over-inflated the price due to the device being used on many ghost hunting TV shows.

Charlton House ghost hunt 20th November 2015
Greenwich, London

charlton-house

This was the last time that we had planned to visit Charlton House, the reason for this is simple, the start time of the event is too late and the Management won’t let us start earlier. We were hoping for a good ghost hunt and it was another excellent night.

All groups in the séance sessions felt the resident spirits move or touch them. Some of the movements especially with the third group were pulling us towards the floor, why this is so common we have no idea but there must be a reason otherwise spirit wouldn’t do it.

Have of the session I held a séance the half of the time I was introducing the guests to certain electronic gadgets and kit that we use. Many guests had useful communication via a spirit box including saying the guests’ names, which was scary to some of them.

This was an enjoyable ghost hunt and one in which all the guests had some form a paranormal encounter, either from using the gadgets or from the séances.

We would like to return but until the event times are earlier this will not be possible.

Explosion Museum – 6th February 2016 – Kym

Explosion Museum ghost hunt 6th February 2016
Gosport, Hampshire

explosion-museum-1

AREA: P-BUILDING
EQUIPMENT: OUIJA, TABLE TIPPING, WRITING PLANCHETTE, GLASSWORK

We started the evening by having a tour around the Explosion Museum with the VIP’s, being led into some interesting areas that are not seen by the general public.  I chose to work in a huge building that would have been used, and still was being used, for storage and boat building/renovation.  The weather was very wet and windy at the start of the evening, with the door being continuously blown open and closed, but the skies became clear and still later.

We started with half the group on the Ouija, and the remainder of the group on the table tipping, but with only slight movement on both all seven guests tried the table tipping together.  However, before this we were hearing whistles when asking out for them, and one guest felt his chair move whilst sitting in it.  The table started moving immediately, lifting up at the side, twisting and spinning randomly.  We were also experiencing a coldness moving around us, and some felt they were being touched.  We did hear what sounded like the glass being moved across the Ouija table, but on checking the glass had not moved, or if it had, it had been moved back.

With my second group we had a little movement on the Ouija, with the glass twisting, but no communication.  The group on the table had some slight movement, they tried the writing planchette, but the table tried moving again.  So I brought all the guests together and we all tried the table tipping.  We had some gentle rocking, and were hearing noises around us, a mumble or murmur in one area, one guest saw a shadow in a different area at the same time were heard a rustle/movement there too.  We all tried the Ouija, the glass moved to the numbers 4 and 5, was this his age?  The glass started moving to yes but then stopped.

With my last group we had a little movement on the Ouija but no communication.  We then all tried the table tipping and it did start rocking very gently.  I encouraged the guests to interact with the spirit, and the more they did this, the more the table moved.  We then tried the writing planchette, had no movement, but the table was moving again, so we switched back to that.  And again with the guests asking, especially Janet, the table moved and spun as they asked.

With the controlled sessions over, and an hour left of the night, I joined three guests, in the Admin Building.  We went to the shower/toilet area in the back left of the building and started with the Ouija board on the table we use for table tipping.  The planchette started moving immediately, and went to “Hello”.  We then asked for spirit to spell his first name and got “OFUK” – interesting!  The planchette went to “goodbye”, but we asked spirit to stay with us for some table tipping.  With our fingertips lightly on the table, the table started moving.  We managed to get the table to lift towards Mark for yes, and opposite for no, and was able to ask spirit some questions.  He was a male spirit from WW2 who had murdered someone here.  Mark suddenly felt a coldness behind him and heard a footstep next to him, which made him jump.  We had also heard a footstep earlier in a different place.  We then put the Ouija board back on the table without the planchette, and with us touching the board asked spirit to move it, to our surprise the Ouija board started moving on the table.  We then asked it to rotate, which it did.  With only a short time left, we went back to the table tipping, and again the table started lifting, spinning and started to walk out the room.  We did also have a spirit box on for some of the time and were hearing corresponding words to the answers on the board i.e. hello and yes.

A fabulous end to the night at a terrific venue!

Fort Amherst – 29th January 2016 – Kym

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2016

Fort Amherst ghost hunt 29th January 2016
Chatham, Kent

fort-amherst-1

Area: Radio Room
Kit & Human Pendulum

I started the night by giving the VIP’s a personal tour around the tunnels, showing them how to use the Ghost Pro’s and KII’s.  We stopped for a short while on the Gun Floor, and immediately we were sensing spirit around us.  I started feeling a static energy around me, and a pressure on my head, as if I was wearing a very tight hat.  I was also being pulled back.  I asked spirit to do this to others, and Pat (guest) to my left started being pushed & pulled back too.  We were also asking spirit to copy our whistles, and were very surprised when we heard whistles back twice, especially Luke & Jay (guests) when they heard it right next to them.

With the event starting we headed back to the guest’s area, and commenced with the three controlled sessions.  I started with the first group by showing them all the equipment, and we explored the Radio Room.  No activity on the KII’s and Sprit Box, but a lot of interaction with the Ghost Pro’s.  We then did a human pendulum, and was able to communicate with a French male from the 1600’s, aged 40+ and not married.  He was not connected to this fort.  We then had a young female spirit who had a small child, was not married, and had died young.  Then we had a male prisoner from Fort Horsted.  He had killed someone, but said he deserved it.  He had killed another person, and the prisoner had seeked revenge.  The prisoner had escaped once but had been recaptured.

With my second group again just activity on the Ghost Pro’s.  With the human pendulum we first communicated with a female who had miscarried.  Her husband was in the Navy and connected with the fort.  The second spirit that came through was her husband, who confirmed he was in the navy in WW1.  He said his ship was bombed, but by the Russians.  The ship sank but he survived.  He worked as a deck hand cleaning the ship.  After his wife had lost their child, he had an affair and fathered two children.  He was born and lived in Kent.  I wanted to know the spirit’s name, so I asked all the guests to clear their mind and ask spirit to tell them his name.  Initially we had John, then Sam, but three of us all had George, including Jenny (guest) who was in the middle with me.  Spirit confirmed that was his name but moving Jenny to yes.

My last group was too small to do a human pendulum so we just concentrated on kit.  We had a lot of activity on the ghost pro’s, communicating with George again.  On the spirit box we kept hearing a female calling what sounded like “help”.
Throughout all the sessions, people did comment that they felt they were being touched.
At the end of the night I joined most of the guests on the Gun Floor for some amazing Table Tipping with a very large table.

Fort Borstal – 30th October 2015 (Kym)

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 30th October 2015
Rochester, Kent.

fort-borstal-front

Area: Caponier
Equipment: Rods, Pendulums, Ghost Pro, KII, SB7, Ovilus III, Mel Meter
Once everyone knew how to use the rods & pendulums (some were familiar to the equipment), we all communicated with the spirits there, of which were several.  We were feeling coldness around us, and felt like we were being touched too.  We also heard a loud male breath near us.  We then used the rest of the equipment, and felt there was a spirit in the corridor.  Every now and again he would come into the room, then venture back out to the corridor.  The Mel Meter showed the temp to be 13 degrees, and 0.4 to 0.5 mg.  We also had various words on the Ovilus, but nothing on the SB7.  With the second group again we had spirit communication using all the equipment.  On the Ovilus we had the following words: general – pat – fly – Africa – disaster.  Were we talking to the pilot that had come down here at the fort.  With the controlled sessions over I joined most of the guests and Trudi (team) back in the caponier doing Ouija and table tipping.  Both were very active, with the guests amazed by what they were able to experience.

Charlton House – 10th October 2015 (Kym)

Friday, October 23rd, 2015

Charlton House ghost hunt 10th October 2015
London

Area: Attic
Equipment: Dowsing Rods, Pendulums, Ghost Pro, KII, Spirit Box, Ovilus III, Mel Meter

Group C – This was a new area for us to work in, we had ventured into this area in the free session before, but it was a great opportunity to experience this place more.  We started by using the dowsing rods & pendulums, many had used these before, and had visited this venue before.  Two female guests were communicating with a female spirit, her husband and a son.  They were feeling them too by the static energies moving around them.  They were also sensing a small girl too.  They were hearing tapping, and when asking spirit to repeat, they would hear it again.  We then started using the equipment, no activity all night on the KII’s, but a lot of communication with the Ghost Pro’s.  Some were experiencing headaches, and feeling sick in a certain room.  On the Ovilus when asking spirit his name we got Paul, when asking if that was his name we got “rewind”.  Seemed quite apt.

Group A – Started with the rods & pendulums, and guests went off to explore the area communicating with spirit.  I also handed out kit for the guests to use.  Jo (guest) wanted to know the name of the spirit she was communicating with, and as I often say we are all receptive to spirit communication if we allow, so I left her on her own for a short while, asking spirit their name, and she had two names given to her in her head: Michael & Sam.  We asked the ghost pro if Michael was his name, and it answered yes.  Asked a few more questions; Michael had lived here, he didn’t own the house, but his family did.  Then a different spirit started communicating with us on the ghost pro, I suggested Jo ask if it was Sam, and answered yes.  He was the brother of Michael.  We asked how old Sam was, and the Ovilus answered “six”.  Whilst we were all standing at the top of the stairs, we all heard a loud bang in one of the rooms behind us.  This was the door to the roof, but checking, it was securely closed.  We continued to communicate with Sam, and I felt a touch on my leg.  I then felt a touch & coldness to my right hand, asking for Sam to touch Jo she immediately felt a coldness on her hand, and a tug on her little finger.

Group B – Again we started by using the rods & pendulums, and most had spirit communication.  Female & male spirits.  One guest had the name “Sam Moore” in her head.  Guests were feeling cold areas around them.  They were also being touched and pushed.  Someone felt her arm being moved up whilst holding the dowsing rods.  Whilst we were all standing at the top of the stairs, we asked the spirit to touch us, and two guests felt a cold touch on their thighs, in the same place at the same time.
An interesting area, and when entering at the start of the evening on my own I had the feeling of being watched, sensing there were many that wanted to communicate with us.  We were not disappointed.

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt – 3rd October 2015

Thursday, October 22nd, 2015

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt 3rd October 2015
Colchester, Essex

Due to the management at the hotel this event did not go as smoothly as previous events and we had to use public parts of the hotel that we would not normally use for the ghost hunt. That said the information and activity experienced by the guests was relatively normal for the venue.

The first two sessions that I undertook were using our ghost hunting equipment and gadgets, all guests had communication with various spirits including a spirit box where voices were clearly heard answering questions asked by the guests. [A spirit box is a device that scans radio frequencies in reverse at 100ms]

The following two sessions I held séances in the cellar of the hotel with spirit happily and capable of moving the majority of the circles. Some people were pushed, swayed and gently rocked, some people had to be asked to be moved whilst others were moved whether they asked or not. Some of the guests were pulled by their arms to the floor, whilst other were raised high above their heads.

Some people were not moved at all, but these guests did not speak for the entire session. Therefore nothing happened to them.

All in all this event ran as smoothly as we could manage given the difficult circumstances the manager of the hotel had enforced on us. The majority of the guests had great paranormal experiences which left some of the speechless.

Theatre Royal ghost hunt – 15th August 2015

Tuesday, October 13th, 2015

Theatre Royal ghost hunt 15th August 2015
Margate, Kent

As a team we always look forward to investigate a theatre, it is one of those locations much like a library or hospital that is on most ghost hunter’s wish list.

Normally I investigate back stage but on this occasion I decided to use the bar area for my séances.

The first group there was some slight arm movement, this was due to the fact that no-one in that group spoke at all or asked spirit to do anything, so I finished the session early as it was pointless continuing.

The second group had lots of movement and pushed to the floor by their hands, the spirit responsible for this was called Godfrey aged in his early 60s and dressed for the Theatre in 1850s, he was also accompanied by his daughter called Laetitia.

Godfrey was also capable of pushing and swaying several of the guests.

The next two sessions I held on the top floor of the theatre. Mostly in the corridor but also in the seating area. This was a gadget and tech session. The highlight of these sessions was a spirit box session in the male toilets that proved to be very out spoken. The guests heard one of their group’s Christian names, then the age, followed by “hi” and “hello” and answered the question “how many of us in the room?” with “seven” followed by “how many men?” with “four”. I left the guests to see if the spirit would continue answering their questions. Which it did but after a while the guests became scared and returned to the base room.

Lots of guests reported seeing strange lights backstage along with shadows seen on the fly floor (the part of the backstage area used to lower the scenery and backdrops)

This was a very interesting ghost hunt and we look forward to returning in 2016

Explosion Museum ghost hunt – 24th July 2015

Friday, July 31st, 2015

Explosion Museum ghost hunt 24th July 2015
Gosport, Hampshire

This was the third time that we had investigated the Explosion Museum. The original plan was to use rooms and buildings that would be dark because it was summer. However as it turned out there was no problem with light because 24th July it rained constantly all day and it was a dark and miserable day.

Sometimes we have several members of the team present, but being July some were on holiday so I decided that Kym, Louise and I would hold two different activities in different parts of the site so that the guests could experience different aspects of ghost hunting. The first two sessions, one with each group would be a séance session, followed by a tech and gadget session both sessions would be held in different buildings.

After splitting the guests into two groups I headed off to a building known as C Mag.

We were joined by a spirit called Colin who had a Dorset accent, aged in his mid 20s and was someone who worked in this building unloading explosives. He had a colleague but this person who was aged in his late 30s was only called by a derogatory name; Stupid.

Both séances Colin and his accomplice touched, pushed, twisted and swayed people as part of the séance, many times our arms were lifted as high as we could reach and then pulled downwards so that we touched the floor.

Many guests felt uncomfortable in the room and there were odd noises heard and cold spots felt. The cold spots weren’t in the same place on each session and those who reported the coldness sometimes were the only person who could feel it. On more than one occasion people saw something that they described as a person or a shadow moving behind people. On one of the occasions a guest and I saw something that looked like a person wearing a hooded jacket, turn and walk away from the group. If the workers in this room wore felt suits which is likely during its early days then this could be an explanation of what we saw.

The following two sessions were tech and gadget sessions held in a building known as 309 which is a store room and maintenance room for all the large guns, missiles and implements of war that don’t fit in the main museum. Adjoining this building are the two former cottages.

After explaining how the gadget work and handing out kit to everyone I let people roam around the building. I had also set up a laser grid. I had hoped to use a spirit box, as it was still raining I thought it might be better to listen to that noise, but unfortunately the two spirits boxes that we brought to Gosport neither of them worked, both had the same problem which was a battery leakage. This is strange as our kit is used weekly and it was fine 6 days ago.

Nevertheless guests had lots of activity in both groups with our KII meters and Ghost Meter Pro’s (EMF meters) and had unusual spikes in the cottages. The REM Mel meter also went off a couple of times although we heard it no-one was near it on either occasion to witness what triggered it.

Many times we heard footsteps and strange bangs within the building, every time I asked the guests where they thought the noise came from, everyone pointed in different directions.

All in all this was another great ghost hunt at the Explosion Museum and we look forward to returning later in the year.
