Geophone

A Geophone is used to see noises. Strictly speaking these are data logging devices to record vibrations or sounds, however we are not after the scientific version, we just need to be able to see when there has been a noise or vibration. The device picks up sounds and converts this into light which is displayed by the device.

Some are round, others and square or oblong and others have a range of lights. The purpose of the device is the same, it is to “see” the noise. Depending on how the device lights up will depend on the loudness of the noise. Some models more lights, light up, others get brighter or different colours.

Whilst these do not measure the sound with any accuracy, these are purely designed to let you know that there is a noise or vibration. These devices are usually very accurate in picking up noise or vibrations that we cannot hear. This is also one of the downfalls of these devices, that any small movement create a noise or vibration. They are however ideal for lock-off situations or where there won’t be anyone present.

This is the reason why we like these devices as we can put them beside some other kit which has a camera pointed at it in a locked off area and know that if the geophone lights up then something must have made a noise.

At one time these were quite simple devices and you pick them up cheaply for about £20 in Maplin. However since their inclusion in the paranormal field and ghost hunting these are now quite expensive and start at about £35 and the top end models are about £80, found on Amazon or eBay.

Newhaven Fort – 18th March 2017 – Steve

Newhaven Fort ghost hunt 18th March 2017
Newhaven, East Sussex

Newhaven Fort is a new venue for us in 2017, and after a site visit back in January I was really looking forward to the event itself.

I started both my sessions in the Laboratory, in both sessions we were joined by spirit, the strongest spirit was a chap called Stanley, a Second World War soldier aged in his mid-40s who could lift peoples’ hands and arms, push people and pull people backward off their feet.

The second session the spirits were less forthcoming but nevertheless they were still able to move us.
After both sessions, I asked everyone to think of a question to ask spirit and recorded their questions and a gap after each question for spirit to respond in the hope of recording a spirit voice (a.k.a. EVP – Electronic Voice Phenomena). At the time of writing, the audio files are still being analysed.

After the second session, I asked questions via a spirit box in the hope of hearing a spirit voice but unfortunately none were forthcoming.

The East Bastion and Caponier were strange places to be and many guests wandered (quite quickly!) through them, on several occasions footsteps and other noises we heard behind the person exploring and whilst this area is known for ghostly whistles, none were heard.

We are looking forward to our return to this fort in October 2017.

Fort Amherst – 20th May 2016 – Kym

Friday, July 8th, 2016

Fort Amherst ghost hunt 20th May 2016
Chatham, Kent

fort-amherst-1

Area: Upper Gun Floor

Ouija & Table Tipping, Dowsing Rods, Pendulums & Human Pendulum
We started with half the group on Ouija, and the other half on Table Tipping.  We had slight movement on both.  We then tried the Human Pendulum and had the spirit of a male soldier step forward.  He had passed in his 20’s from a head injury.  His wife was also with us.  One of the guests had his name as Archibald.  He had murdered someone, for stealing his money.  He was happily married, who then stepped forward, her name was Elizabeth.  We did try the table tipping again and had a lot of rocking but no more.  We then used the dowsing rods & pendulums, and guests enjoyed exploring and communicating with the spirits.

With my second group again we started with table tipping and had some rocking, one more than another with a lot of spins, rocking and walking across the room to where the spirit was standing, after hearing noises from that area.  We then all tried the very large table and was able to get a lot of movement, rocking rapidly, tipping up and holding to one side when asked.  Two guests at one end of the table both had blowing in their ears at the same time.  Jenny (guest) kept feeling like someone was pulling on her trousers.  We tried the Ouija and had the spirit of Edgar, from 1943 aged 23.  He was pushed down the stairs here in this room and died of a head injury.  The man that pushed him was having an affair with his wife.  People have experienced being pushed on these stairs.  Was this the reason why?  His wife Charlotte who was a nurse, had tried to make him better.  Others were using the rods & pendulums to communicate with the spirits, a male spirit confirmed he was the one that had moved the large table.

With my last group we had a little movement on the Ouija & table tipping, but not enough to communicate.  Tried the large table and had some gently rocking.  Used the rods & pendulums for a short while, but everyone wanted to try the human pendulum.  We had a spirit come through that had known Mark (guest).  He was able to communicate with him.
In the free session I joined Mark and his family in the Salle Port, we started with table tipping and had some slight movement.  We then switched to glass work, and with a yes & no established communicated with the spirit with us.  We were hearing noises around us, and did hear and feel a breath.
A great night at Fort Amherst again!

Fort Amherst ghost hunt 20th May 2016
Chatham, Kent

fort-amherst-003

Fort Amherst is one of our favourite venues as there is never a dull moment during the event. It is also one of the spookiest as long tunnels and underground rooms often are.

During the séance sessions that I held we were joined by a spirit called Christopher who was aged in his late 30s and an Army Sergeant from the Second World War era.

Whilst Christopher was able to push and manipulate people we also heard a lot of strange noises, doors banging and footsteps. This was all very odd as there wasn’t a slight breeze outside let alone a strong wind to slam a door.

During the final séance session many of the group, including me had numb or tingling toes. What this meant or what it was supposed to mean is unknown, maybe we’ll find out on a return visit to Fort Amherst later this year.

This was another excellent ghost hunt at the Fort with lots of paranormal activity felt and experienced by the guests.

Landguard Fort – 6th November 2015 – Steve

Landguard Fort ghost hunt 6th November 2015
Felixstowe, Suffolk

landguard-fort

For this evening I chose one of the magazine rooms near to the Caponier told hold my séances.

We were joined in this room by two Second World War Army soldiers; Georgie and Frank, both aged in their early 20s and both wanted to have fun.

The first group didn’t get much in the way of physical movement, although we could hear lots of strange noises and footsteps.

The second group experienced lots of movement including pushing people against the walls and pulling them by their arms to the floor. Once again some strange noises were heard but no footsteps.

The third group all experienced their arms being moved and some people were swayed, pushed and twisted as well as being pulled to the floor. We have no idea if there were strange noises or not in this group since we were all laughing so much.

This was an excellent ghost hunt with everyone experiencing some form of paranormal activity either during the séances or one of the other sessions.

Fort Borstal – 30th October 2015 – Steve

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 30th October 2015
Rochester, Kent

fort-borstal-front

The séance sessions we were joined by a spirit called Antony (Tony) who was a Marine, aged in his early 30s and wore glasses for reading.

Tony was able to poke people and make some people including me get very hot during the séance. He was also able to move people, mostly by their arms, but also pushing and pulling the guests backwards. Many people experienced arm movement then a very heavy force would be applied to their shoulders which forced each person down towards the floor.

A number of times guests would be pushed and pulled towards the corners of the room and sometimes from opposite corners. This resulting in many people being tangled and twisted, sometime in painful or unusual positions that we could not figure out how to untangle ourselves. This was a very strange experience which wasn’t filmed on this particular night.

Odd smells were smelt by various people including myself, these smells were; pepper, sweet tobacco and other strange and unusual smells.

During a total darkness experiment people felt a spirit amongst us, some could see the outline of a person whilst others heard a young female voice, unfortunately whilst we heard the voice we couldn’t understand what was said.

This was an enjoyable ghost hunt with everyone experiencing paranormal activity.

Charlton House – 20th November 2015 (Louise)

Tuesday, January 12th, 2016

Charlton House ghost hunt 20th November 2015
Greenwich, London

charlton-house

Area: Grand Salon
Equipment: Writing Planchette/ Table tipping

Session 1: Group C
Guests (Andy, Rosemary, Daniel and Danielle)
I started this session with the writing planchette. Initially the planchette was really slow to start. Andy (guest) encouraged spirit to step forward and move the planchette for us and draw something on the paper. The planchette then started moving around the paper drawing small circles and the bigger circles. The spirit of a man then entered the room and stood in the doorway watching us. I could not make out his features as they were blurred to me. I kept getting the name Edward in my head over and over again. I did not tell the guests this as some of them might have picked up on the same name. I asked the spirit if he could write his initial on the paper but we got no further movement from the planchette.
We then moved on to the table tipping and immediately heard loud footsteps outside in the corridor. Daniel (guest) went to investigate in case when of the other groups ha finished early but there was no-one there. As he came back into the room the door behind us slammed really hard. We investigated all possibilities but could not come up with an explanation and had to believe this might have been paranormal. After we re-grouped and went back on to the table it began moving straight away rocking gently at first but then tipping and spinning really fast.

Session 2:
Group A
I started the group on the writing planchette. Again the movement was slow to start but eventually with encouragement from the group it slowly started moving around the paper. I told the guests I was thinking of an animal in my head and Eve (guest) asked the spirit if it could please draw the animal for us. The planchette started moving very fast drawing different shapes on the paper but none of them resembled the animal I had in my head. The guests then wanted to move on to the table. Encouraging spirit the table moved straight away. I stepped away from the table but kept encouraging spirit to keep moving the table for the guests. It tipped on to two legs and held this position, then suddenly spun round in a clockwise direction and started walking into the other room. Once I the room the table stopped and we didn’t get anymore more movement. I asked spirit it they could copy me and bang on the table two times. Spirit did do straight away you could feel the vibrations through the table.

Session 3:
Group B
I started this session on the writing planchette. Again the spirit was very reluctant to move the planchette. We kept encouraging spirit as a group but we only got very slow movements. Just about to give up and move on to the table, the planchette started moving and drawing random lines and circles. We all then encouraged spirit to try really hard for us again and see if they could spell out their initials for us and they confirm if they were male or female by drawing the letters. The movement was very quick at this point and I asked spirit when they had finished to lift one end of the planchette up for us. The planchette suddenly lifted and fell on to its side. When we looked at the paper we were all amazed as clearly on the paper were the letter R and N, then a few circles and lines and the letter M in the corner of the paper.
Moving onto the table we only got very slight rocking back and fourth, but we heard lots of noises coming from the other room. Creaking floorboards and loud knocks and bangs were heard by the whole group. We all went to investigates and asked spirit if they could make the noises again for us please. Spirit did so but this time back out in the other room.

Really active areas of the building making everybody feel uneasy and some very tired like they had been drained of energy.

Charlton House – 20th November 2015 (Kym)

Charlton House ghost hunt 20th November 2015
Greenwich, London

charlton-house

Area: Long Gallery
Equipment: Dowsing Rods, Pendulums, Ouija

Having a quick walk around with Louise (team) I saw a dark shadow of a person on the stairs.  We continued upstairs and whilst setting up with Louise we both had an uneasy feeling in one of the upstairs room, and whilst trying some table tipping in that room a door started moving, when checking inside, seeing nothing, Louise closed the door and it was pulled shut with force from her hand.  Louise decided she wanted to work in that room, and as we went to leave we heard what sounded like one of the chairs moving across the carpet, but couldn’t see any chair, or table had been moved.  On leaving again we heard the same noise again, but again couldn’t see anything that had moved.  The third time whilst walking out we heard it again but again saw nothing different.

With my first group we started with a séance circle to invite the spirit to join us, and whilst doing this one of the guests noticed his torch (which was turned on) move on the table.  Starting with the Ouija we were hearing noises and creaks around us, but with no movement on the glass we tried with the dowsing rods & pendulums.  The guests were communicating with two spirits, a husband and wife who had lived here.  We tried to work out the year, but we all had different: 1550’s, 1800’s and 2000’s.  Alex saw a light/orb with his eyes, and was getting a lot of activity in the area he was standing, using his dowsing rods.

With my second group we were communicating with spirits using the rods & pendulums, and whilst using the Ouija we were seeing shadows and hearing noises in the room.  But with only a little movement with the glass, we went to explore the adjoining rooms.  We were all drawn to the top of the staircase, sensing a female spirit that may have been pushed here.

With the last group, we tried the Ouija at the top of the staircase and did get some slight movement, but not enough to communicate.  However, myself and Eve (guest) were getting a sharp stabbing pain to the back of our heads, felt very sore and burning.  Tom’s (guest) head torch had also started flashing, and to our surprise when we asked for the flashing to stop/start it would do so on command.

Fort Borstal – 13th November 2015 (Kym)

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 13th November 2015
Rochester, Kent

fort-borstal-front

With my group tonight I was doing the Human Pendulum, and the first spirit that joined us was a female spirit who had worked here at the fort in the Second World War.  Her husband was also stationed here, who was with her in spirit.  They had both passed away from old age.

The next spirit that joined us was a male friend of the previous female spirit, and he shared some details of his life here at the fort.

The final spirit that joined us was a female, however had wanted to be a man, to give her the opportunity for better employment.  She initially said she had joined the marines, but also said yes to being in the navy and a fisherman.  She said she was from the 1700’s and had passed before she was twenty.  The guest standing in the middle was Anita, and when we stopped she had been hearing an old war song in her head, with the name Polly in it.  To myself and Louise’s (team) surprise we had both had the name Polly in our head throughout.  Was this the name of the spirit, or did she just like singing that song.  We asked the spirit to join us in the Ouija session, so we could find out some more details about her.

We also wanted to try an experiment, I wrote a word in my notepad, and asked spirit to copy this word on the Ouija when asked.  This word was not shown to anyone.  However, when we did ask spirit to copy this word later on, with the spirits confirming they knew the word, they were unable to copy it on the Ouija until we had asked several times, and re-shown the word to spirit.

Also, throughout the pendulum session we were all hearing noises and footsteps around us, and some guests felt like they were being touched.

Charlton House ghost hunt – 10th October 2015

Charlton House ghost hunt 10th October 2015
London

We have investigated Charlton House on a number of occasions and it is safe to say that we know that it is haunted and have many reoccurring incidents in various rooms of the house.

However every time we go there I try to investigate a different area or room and move the team around so that they can experience the different spirit energies.

This time around I chose the Library for my séance sessions and several spirits came to join us. We were joined in the first session by an Army Captain from the First World War, he didn’t give me his name but he was aged in his mid-30s. There was also a Priest present who was from a much later time period but he was not a happy fellow, but we really never discovered why he was so unhappy.

Various noises were heard within the room as well as people feeling their arms tingle and move, some people also felt cold spots that came and went but not consistent with a draft.

The second session we were joined by Dave a soldier also from the First World War, Dave was able to manipulate people much more than in the first session, with people being twisted and their legs moved, sometimes against their wishes.

Strange an odd noises were heard throughout this session some of the noises sounded like people walking on the upper mezzanine floor.

The third session we were once again joined by the Priest who was aged in his late-60s, this time around he was able to push and sway people by moving their arms. We were also joined by another soldier called Lincoln who was only able to make people feel tingly and slightly dizzy.

All in all this was a very enjoyable ghost hunt and we look forward to our last visit of 2015 at Charlton House on 20th November
