Voice Recorder

These simple voice recorders are used to record questions asked by us to spirit in the hope that we record an answer. This would be known as an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena). Since spirit voices can be quiet it is imperative when asking the questions to be as quiet as possible. When we analyse the audio recording, we can hear if there is a spirit response (although we may not clearly understand the words at first).
Often the spirit voice is quiet or at least lower than our own voices and we must listen for the tell-tale signs. On a computer using certain software it is possible to see the waveform of a spirit voice. Oddly or helpfully every spirit voice starts the same way when looking at the waveform, no matter what the response to the question is.

Since most spirit voices can be quiet (some are loud) we must remind people to be quiet, no talking or whispering as this could be mistaken for a spirit voice. No movement as clothing makes a noise, especially winter jackets. Plus, all mobile phones to be switched off as our audio equipment will pick up the carrier signals for incoming sms text or phone calls.

It is also important after asking a question to leave a silence period, so that spirit have the time to answer. We usually tell people to be silent for 5-10 seconds after asking a question.
It can be fulfilling to have an answer to a question you asked to spirit. It does not happen all the time, but with practise it is possible to have quality answers. Obviously, the questions need to be specific to the venue or location or the spirit. We often tell people to ask the sort of question you would answer if someone asked you that question. E.g. What’s your name? Did/do you work/live here?

If you have a rapport with a spirit (and have listened back to some recordings and know that you have some responses, even though you may not know what is said until after the investigation), you can ask more detailed questions or more personal questions. The idea through EVP is to be able to gather tangible evidence that could potentially be looked up or is known. One of our favourite questions is to ask spirit; how many people are in this room? Or how many can you see? Quite often we have had the right answer spoken back to us.

The simple Olympus ones that we use VN2100PC and VN3100PC are readily available on Amazon & eBay and can be picked up for about £15 each. You can get more expensive recorders including Tascam recorders, but the results are much the same.

You could probably use an old tape-based system, but in the digital age it is a lot easier to transfer a digital recording on a PC.

Marwell Hall – 11th April 2015 (Wayne)

Marwell Hall ghost hunt 11th April 2015
Winchester, Hampshire

Seymour Room

Equipment used :- Ghost Pros, K2 Meters, Mel meter, Laser Grid, Full Spectrum Video and Still Cameras, SB7 Spirit Box and Digital Voice Recorders in all sessions.

Session 1

As always ghost pros and K2 meters were given to the guests to see if any communication could be established with spirit, almost immediately the ghost pros were lighting to indicate spirit presence.
2 female guests were talking to a female spirit that claimed to be Jane Seymour and another that said she was the spirit of the bride who became trapped in a chest and was not found until many years later.
We started a spirit box session and noticed a female scream lasting about 3 seconds over multiple sweeps, this was also heard by a male guest. Were these screams of the trapped bride?

Session 2

This next session became much more active with guests interacting with spirit and asking plenty of questions through the ghost pros.
We had male and female spirits present. A female guest managed to communicate with the bride on several occasions and also a male spirit that worked at the hall who died in the 1880s.
Another female guest using a ghost pro was speaking to a chamber maid in her 20s from the 1800s and an older chamber maid in her 50s from the 1700s.
We held EVP and Spirit box sessions but no voices were captured.

Session 3

Activity started before the guests came into the area, as just outside the doorway our next group could already sense spirit. A couple of the guests were being prodded by “unseen hands” and when they questioned Steve (GHE team) he told them that there had been the spirit of the “house master ” standing in that spot all evening and he keeps prodding people. All of the group where taking photos in and around the area before we went into the Seymour Room where the guests carried on taking photos as they were capturing many unexplained lights, orbs and the odd mist here and there. Ghost pros and K2s were being used by the guests that weren’t taking photos but they were having photos taken of them while they were trying to communicate.
Michaela captured 2 very bright anomalies located against the ornate woodwork which actually looked like light bulbs but clearly were not.
Free time

We (Wayne and Paula) joined with Louise (GHE team)  and the female guest and her boyfriend from Session 2 and went for a snoop around the building and eventually made our way to the room upstairs that Steve was using for all of his séance sessions, where we met Kerry (GHE team) and some of the other guests. We started to call out for spirit to copy our tapping and whistling but all was very quiet. After chatting about table tipping the huge table at Fort Amherst we decided to try table tipping with a large table that was in the room. The room is carpeted and the table has metal feet and was very heavy but we all gathered (probably about 8 of us) round the table and began to put our energy in to trying to get a spirit to move the table, which it did faster and faster the table then moved bit by bit across the room until it came to a standstill, then with no warning slid by itself in one smooth movement, amazing everyone, quickly back towards Kerry and Paula for about 12 inches.

Fort Borstal Paranormal Investigation – 15-2-2014

Fort Borstal Paranormal Investigation 15th February 2014
Rochester, Kent

We arrived early to set up camera’s in the Officers Mess area.  This is a long corridor with six rooms, probably used for army personnel to work & rest.  Room 1 was set up to watch the four cameras.  We had cameras set up in room’s 4, 5 & 6, and one looking down the corridor.  The only equipment we had to use was hearing enhancers and electronic voice recorders.  Our aim was to gather evidence.

Group A sat watching the camera’s with Kerry, whilst I took Group B into the rooms.  In room 4 only myself was swayed back & forward.  Room 5 not too much, but one guest stayed in there whilst we moved to room 6.  That guest shortly joined us as he heard shuffling next to him, and an intake of breath as if someone was about to speak.  He had no hearing enhancers on.  The last room felt very different, all females being pushed/pulled/swayed.  Felt a lot colder in this room, was feeling cold spots, and one guest felt a cold touch on their hand.  Tingling feelings on head and face too.  Guests didn’t like the far right corner, feeling very uncomfortable whilst standing there.

After 30 mins we swapped – Kerry took Group A and they experienced swaying in rooms 4 & 6, although only myself and Kerry in room 4.  Someone heard whispering with the hearing enhancers on.  Another guest was touched on their leg.  Again this group didn’t like the far right corner in room 6.

After a short break we took Groups C & D.  I took Group C first and again we were experiencing swaying in room 4.  In room 5 I was sure I saw a male spirit standing in the far left corner, others were feeling uncomfortable in this room.  I then saw a shadow move a few feet away from that corner.  Time was approx 22.45 – not sure whether our camera was facing that way.  In room 6 many of the guests were swaying.

Jo then took group D first to room 6 – a loud noise was heard by someone with the hearing enhancers on.  When in room 5 they felt uncomfortable in this room.  In room 4 many were swaying again.

Whilst we were watching the cameras in room 1, the room suddenly felt extremely cold, starting with our backs, then eventually all over.

I then had Groups A & B again, and this time the focus was on EVP’s.  Jo took group A and one guest whilst standing in the front right corner of room 6 was feeling very sick.  When someone stood in the far right corner they felt static around them.  Also Jo & guests being swayed and pushed in this room again.  Whilst playing back their first EVP in room 4 someone asked “did you die here” and they were sure they heard a male “yes”.

I then took Group B, and when playing back our first EVP in room 4, we were sure we heard a male whisper after Justin’s (guest) question.  In room 5 before we started the EVP Lee (guest) whistled out asking spirit to copy.  No reply was heard but I suggested Lee do this again on the EVP, which he did.  Whilst playing it back we heard two whistles before Lee asked his question.  However, whilst wearing the hearing enhancers Lee heard a whistle after his question/whistle request, but on playing back again it was not heard, concluded Lee may have heard the whistle in ‘real time’ not on the recording.  We moved to room 6 and Karen (guest) was shoved back three times, she asked spirit for more, saying “is that all you can do”, but received no more.  However, she was the last person to leave that area when we finished, and whilst walking out she thought someone was walking alongside her, she looked but no-one there.  She had the feeling the spirit was escorting out.

Myself and Kerry took Group’s C & D for the final session of the night, however with both groups feeling tired, each time EVP’s were recorded, nobody could be serious and kept laughing.

A brilliant night – great fun and lots of very different experiences.
