Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt – 18th April 2015

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt 18th April 2015
Colchester, Essex

This was our second investigation in Colchester of the week as we had been at The Town Hall the night before and were hoping that the spirits would make themselves known in the Hotel.

We split everyone into 4 groups and each group headed off to a different area with different team members. I chose the cellar as always because some things happen here which do not happen anywhere else in the hotel.

There was only really one spirit in the cellar, his name was Michael and he was a Dray man (he delivered ale and beer from the local brewery). He fell to his death at The Red Lion hotel (although it wasn’t called that then) in 1833 by falling down the keg drop and breaking his neck.

This wasn’t the only spirit that made an appearance although Michael was the most prominent or the strongest energy. There were also other male spirits who lurked in the background and a couple of female spirits who made themselves known to different people.

All but the last group to the cellar there was lots of arm movement on command, with the arms of people being lifted when they thought nothing was going to happen to them, people being pushed and swayed on their feet much to their surprise and amazement. Some of the guests saw what they thought were people lurking in the shadows, or people watching them.

Plus every so often one of the grates of the keg drop is loose so when people on the high street walked on it, it made a very loud bang. This didn’t help with people’s nerves, especially when they were standing closer to it!

There were also many strange noises and whispers heard by some people but not everyone, although those that heard the sounds could not always say in which direction the sound came from.

In the second group there was a male guest who said that he felt petrified, he didn’t know why but he was afraid of something, this was apparently very uncharacteristic of him as he usually wasn’t scared of anything. After the session had ended he went outside and when he came back in he felt fine.

The last group didn’t want to be moved and every time someone walked on the grate several people screamed and jumped. However another male guest in this group during the course of the séance started acting in an aggressive manner and when I looked at him he didn’t look himself and looked very angry and had the face of someone who wanted to fight. He also reported that he felt very cold and at one point unable to stand properly. I felt that had the conditions have been right he (the guest) would have gone into a trance to allow the spirit to talk, however I also felt that it wasn’t safe to do so. After I placed this guest in the centre of the circle he regained his normal look and stance and told me what he felt, although he didn’t know why he felt so aggressive.

We have held numerous ghost hunts at the Red Lion Hotel and I have held many séances in the cellar, but never has a person felt aggressive for no reason or been affected by spirit in this way, let alone two people in different groups behaving in similar ways.

Once again a very enjoyable ghost hunt that many people had paranormal encounters and experiences that they weren’t expecting.

Pluckley Screaming Woods ghost hunt – 7-2-2014

Sunday, February 9th, 2014

Pluckley Screaming Woods ghost hunt 7th February 2014
Pluckley, Kent

Pluckley Screaming woods is one of our most popular ghost hunts which is attested by the amount of time in advance people have to book, which at the time of writing is 4 months ahead of the event. Everyone came dressed for the weather, which as usual was rain, although the rain didn’t arrive in the woods until we were at least half way through the night.

After walking to the centre of the woods I handed out our usual ghost hunting equipment, which consisted of KII meters (with are proximity metres [to spirit]) and our Ghost Pro’s which are communicators through a series of flashing.

It took a while, but eventually spirit started to come forward, first a male spirit who had leather patches on his trousers, which I thought may have been a woodman, as it turned out he wasn’t. He was a pig farmer who kept pigs within the woods. Although he never actually gave me his name he was aged in his late 30s and came from the mid-1800s. He was quite happy to answer questions that John (guest) asked via our communication equipment. We were also joined by a female spirit who was aged in her late 20s, possibly early 30s and she also didn’t give me her name. She seemed shy and reluctant to answer questions. The KII meters never lit up at all, much to our disappointment.

The two spirits seem to be opposite each other and communicated with the people who were closest to them, so the pig farmer communicated with John and the female spirit communicated with Cheryl & Kerry (guests). David & Charlotte (guests) didn’t have a communication device but both kept seeing odd shadows and lights within the woods. Kerry and I also kept hearing mumbling and talking, which was like a conversation being carried on the wind, but at that time it wasn’t windy in fact quite still and I couldn’t work out or hear what the conversation was about although it seemed relentless.

Several people started to take photos and Kerry & Cheryl had strange anomalous photos with unusual light anomalies which I have never seen before here or in fact anywhere else.

John kept seeing a shadow walk between two trees and every time he saw something come towards us his communication device lit up. He asked (not out loud) whether the spirit kept pigs and then felt something brush past him, I too felt something on my foot and looked down but saw nothing.

I decided that the best way for the guests to feel the spirit energies and experience their energy first hand was to hold a séance. Neither of the spirits that we were communicating with earlier seemed to want to do anything but just as I was wondering whether anything at all would happen a very well dressed spirit called Alfred turned up, he looked like he could have been a mayor or a councillor because he was wearing a very smart suit, he was about 5’8” in height and aged in his late 50s and had a “handlebar” moustache. Alfred was able to move our arms and started with Charlotte and me, which progressed around the left hand side of the circle, leaving just Kerry. As I reassured her to relax and loosen her grip with me our hands started to slowly rise. I then asked Kerry to ask Alfred to move her hands in a particular direction, which Alfred slowly accomplished. Several times my arms were pulled downwards and both guests on either side of me could feel the weight and pressure, although I insisted that I did not want to touch the ground since it was very wet and muddy. Alfred moved my arms to within a whisker of the ground just to prove a point!

At various times whilst we were being moved, I and some of the guests heard footfalls and whispers plus the strange relentless talking, which wasn’t getting louder or quieter, if it were carried on any wind then I would have expected that.

When I asked Alfred to gently push people he moved around the circle and one by one everyone fell backwards, very gently, but enough to know that they were not just losing their balance and David was picked more than anyone else. Cheryl however was not moved at all but Alfred did try a few times but it didn’t work.

From here we moved on to another part of the woods where I switched on my spirit box (a device that scans the FM radio band in reverse at 100ms) and asked for any spirit to say our names. It took a long time but eventually a spirit came and said three of our names and when asking for how many people were present we all heard 10, but there wasn’t ten of us, just six. However we don’t know how many spirits were present as they didn’t answer that question. By this time the rain had started to fall, not terribly heavy but enough to know it was raining. We happened to be standing beside some trees that when the wind blew creaked and groaned like an old wooden door which added to the atmosphere! But every time that I asked for a noise this particular tree squeaked which became rather annoying.

Using the laser grid here as well didn’t produce anything interesting because the rain was interfering with the beam although communication continued and a few times the KII meter that David was holding lit up a lot, which surprised him, although the other KII held by Cheryl and Kerry didn’t.

Kerry and I could still hear this odd talking noise, although we both thought it was coming from different directions, I thought it was coming from deeper in the woods whereas Kerry thought it was coming from the edge of the woods, unfortunately none of the other people could hear this talking sound.

As we started to make our way out of the woods, past an area that people used to live in the woods as late as the early 1900s I could distinctly smell a wood fire, which given the amount of rain we have had recently was hard to believe especially on this particular night because of the level of the rainfall. No-one else could small a fire although John smelt what he described as an odd smell, but couldn’t describe what it smelt like.

Given the weather no EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena) experiments were undertaken because the only noise that would have been heard was the rain, which was a shame because we have had some excellent EVPs from our Pluckley events.

Given the weather this was an excellent ghost hunt with lots of noises and physical paranormal activity felt by the guests and one in which all those present thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Fort Horsted ghost hunt – 17-11-2012

Fort Horsted ghost hunt 17th November 2012
Chatham, Kent

Ghost Hunt Events as a team always enjoy going to Fort Horsted, as every time we go there something different, amazing or unbelievable happens during the ghost hunt which leaves our guests speechless. The level of activity that we have encountered at this Fort is surprising although we look forward to every event as if it were our first time there.

My first session was in a location the furthest from the other group and although we had sporadic communication via our electronic equipment, I decided that it would be better to hold a séance and ask the spirit present to interact with the guests.

Just after we started a male spirit called Michael stood in the doorway, several guests reported that they too saw a shadow in the doorway. Michael was of West African descent in his late 20s and appeared to be from the 1960s. He also told me that he was a carpenter who would have worked at the Fort at some point, he didn’t give the specifics.

Michael was able to move some of the guests arms but the majority of the time we were all hearing mumblings and whisperings from outside the room, although spirit did copy some of my whistles, which were heard by the guests. Also a lot of loud bangs were heard, although given the nature of the tunnels and that sound travels throughout these tunnels, those bangs could have been anything, although not the other group as they were too far away and not in the same tunnel complex. The whisperings and female voices on the other hand were not originating from the tunnels, but from within the room.

After a while we moved into another tunnel to see if guests felt anything strange, which is often the case however on this occasion none of the guests felt anything, but then we were a large group and the best activity here happens to small groups of people. There was however another male energy called Peter present who was able to answer some questions via our electronic equipment. Also more whistles were heard in this tunnel.

My second session was in exactly the same area, as each group just swapped for the second of our controlled sessions. Once again Michael joined us although no-one reported any movements. However many guests this time around (including me) smelt paint or white spirit which was strange as there would never be anyone painting within these tunnels. Some other guests reported smelling liquorice.

Once again we all heard female voices, mumblings and whispers although not on the same level as the previous group and after moving into the other tunnel, even less happened.

The third session was held in casement 26, which involves walking down an interesting and steep staircase below the dry moat. Whilst I was in this area with the majority of the guests I didn’t feel or sense any spiritual activity, although some guests did have some communication via our electronic equipment with a child energy.

After this final session we allowed our guests to go back to any particular area to experience any activity, although the majority of people wanted to experience the same rooms as each other, apart from three guests who asked me if we could go somewhere else and try to get some good evidence as they hadn’t experienced much all evening. So I took them to an area in which other people were unlikely to interrupt us and held a séance to encourage spirit to join us.

This was probably one of the best sessions I have had at the Fort. A male energy called Sergeant Mitchell joined us, he was 27 years old and Scottish and told me that in the Second World War he would train people at the Fort, but he was then sent to Normandy in France where he died from shrapnel wounds. He instantly liked Phil (guest) and myself because of our Celtic links (Phil is Welsh & I am Cornish) and he started moving all of the guests arms, first gently, then with more purpose as the guests got used to the strange feeling. He was also able to push and pull us usually surprising us as he did so. The guests then asked several questions (some out loud and some in their heads) which Mitchell answered by swaying some people and moving our arms to signify yes and no.

During this session, two other guests found us and whilst we were unable to let them fully join in, as we were being manipulated (by being pushed and pulled) they stood and watched. Becky who was standing nearest to us felt strange tingling pins and needle sensations as Mitchell told me that he was trying to touch her. Audrey (guest) who was part of the séance group felt her bum being touched or caressed. At the end of the séance I asked all the guests to think of a personal question to ask Mitchell as part of our EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiment. Many of the questions had some form of response although we have been unable to hear the exact words but three responses (out of six) had audible answers, two of which are very clear. These can be heard at

Once again a very enjoyable ghost hunt, although a little slow to start with, but as the night progressed more activity was experienced by the guests, especially when the two large groups split down into smaller groups. The Ouija board sessions were also very active (this will be covered in another team members report).

The ghost hunt events team were all present as we were shooting a promotional video before the ghost hunt.

Fort Horsted ghost hunt – 22-9-2012

Friday, October 12th, 2012

Fort Horsted ghost hunt 22nd September 2012
Chatham, Kent.

This was our third visit to Fort Horsted in September, the previous two ghost hunts were quite active and all guests had some physical paranormal activity as well as experiences which left them speechless.

We were hopeful that this ghost hunt would be just as productive and we had two guests from the US who saw the Ghost Adventures show back in July and whilst in the UK on holiday decided to attend one of our ghost hunts. Click http://tinyurl.com/8ewbs2q to watch the Ghost Adventures episode at Fort Horsted.

Before we had even started the area at the end of the main tunnel which is an area where many people have experienced strange things, guests and GHE staff saw some strange lights and odd noises coming from the derelict areas of the fort.

I took all groups to casement 26, as this is the most interesting part of the fort, it is also the most strenuous to get to and from. Usually we go into the rooms on the left hand side of the casement but due to two nesting squirrels we used the rooms on the right.

Whilst in this area there were sporadic levels of KII activity but a lot of communication via our electronic equipment. I suggested to a few guests to go into the small room at the back which would have been used to store ammunition. In here there was a male energy called Michael and as people held out their hands he was able to touch them and the guests felt strange sensations in their hands as well as a pins & needles in their fingers.

After joining the bulk of the guests I conducted a séance to try to get the spirit energies that were present to move the guests. Raini (guest) who was standing to my left got the most attention during this as she kept claiming that it was horrible. However the spirit energies were able to move the majority of people’s hands and arms, especially Robyn, Joanne & Graham (guests).

Many times throughout the session everyone heard the sound of talking, whispers and noises which came from the other end of the casement, none of these sounds sounded like two nesting squirrels.

The second group to come to this area were not as brave as the first group; however this did not detract from the level of activity experienced, once again there were high levels of communication via our equipment but less activity on the KII. Odd and strange noises were heard in this area again although they did not sound similar to the noises I heard earlier, these were the sounds of something being hit or dropped.

We were joined by a different male energy, his name was Charlie and he was 53 years old and passed over in 1965. Charlie was a stocky built man about 5’7” in height who was mostly bald except for a small patch at the back of his head. He gave me the impression that he was a carpenter or joiner and that he was a local man who would have worked at the Fort during the 1950s.

Charlie was able to move the hands of the majority of the guests and push or pull some of the guests which all seemed to happen with little warning.

The third group were petrified as soon as we entered the room, some of them looked like that had already seen a ghost!

The spirit activity encountered by this group was a lot less that previous groups, but there was some communication via equipment and in the séance there were some small movements felt by one or two of the guests.

No noises were heard whilst we were in this area with this group.

After the guests had experienced three sessions we then let the guests decide where they would like to go and try to experience the fort in smaller groups. We were all on hand to supervise them but the activities the guests participated in were entirely their own choice. We also gave our equipment to those guests who wanted to do lone vigils or small groups.

Many of the guests chose at this time to go back to casement 10 as the Ouija board and glass movement that the majority of groups experienced was truly exceptional, videos of this will be on our website shortly.

I however joined a group that were far away from everyone else where the group were talking to a young female energy via our electronic equipment. I suggested we hold a séance to get the energies (there were more than one) to interact with the guests. Once I had collected two guests that were investigating an area on their own and brought to this group I joined in the séance. David Corey was the name of the spirit that was in the room with us and he managed to move some of the guests hands.
