Ghost Hunt at Deal Castle (November)

Deal Castle is an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII in Deal, Kent, between 1539 and 1540. It protected against invasion from France. The Castle comprises of a keep with six inner and outer bastions, the moated stone castle and had sixty-six firing positions for artillery.
During the Second English Civil War of 1648–49, Deal was seized by pro-Royalist insurgents and was only retaken by Parliamentary forces after several months' of fighting.
Although it remained armed, Deal Castle was adapted by Sir John Norris and Lord Carrington during the 18th and 19th centuries to form a more suitable private house for the castle's captain, which was an honorary position.
In 1904, the War Office concluded that the castle no longer had any value either as a defensive site or as a barracks and it was opened to the public when the captain was not in residence. Early in the Second World War, the captain's quarters were destroyed by German bombing and the castle became a Battery Operating Post (one of the first-floor rooms in the keep became the Battery Office) for an artillery battery placed along the shore line. The castle was not brought back into use as a residence and was restored by the government during the 1950s to form a tourist attraction.

Ghost Hunt at Shaw House (Halloween)

Shaw House in Newbury, West Berkshire was built in 1581 by Thomas Dolman who made his money as a clothier in Newbury. In the October of 1644 the house witnessed the Second Battle of Newbury and although the house remained unscathed, hundreds of soldiers died in a standoff and many believe this plays a large part in the ghostly encounters witnessed on the estate, the ground and the main house.
Shaw House stood empty until 1728, when the Duke of Chandos bought the estate. The Duke (James Brydges) improved the grounds between 1729 and 1737 however he kept within the framework established by the Dolman family. During the Second World War Shaw House was requisitioned and used by the British, American and Canadian armies.
The house accommodated over two hundred men – a far cry from the pampered households of the earlier times. Later in 1942 American and Canadian troops were housed at Shaw; these troops were subsequently to take part in the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy in 1944.
In 1949 it was finally purchased by Berkshire County Council for use as a Council School. Shaw House began a new life as a school for local children but sadly in 1985 it was evacuated as there were major concerns about the structure of the building.
The unique feature in relation to the paranormal claims at Shaw House is that many have reported full body apparitions throughout the many rooms as well as the sound of battle on the lawns.
Mysterious balls of blue light and a Grey Lady have been seen in the upper rooms. The screams of a former house maid are also said to echo from a tunnel, which reportedly runs between Shaw House to Donnington Castle. She was killed when the tunnel collapsed. The sound of marching has been heard inside the building, and visitors also claim to feeling watched when they have been alone inside!

Whitstable Castle, Whitstable, Kent was built from copperas works in 1790 and this formed the Octagonal Tower. The black tar of the works can still be seen on the walls. The Pearson’s home was known as The Manor House and little is known about its layout except that in 1798 the chimney to the tower was taken down and a staircase put in its place.
The family spent every summer at the house, from their Greenwich based home. Charles Pearson died in 1828. His son Charles Pearson Junior, born in 1786, inherited the estate and carried on using the house as a summer residence. The Tower fell into neglect and he sold it to his cousin by marriage Wynn Ellis.
Wynn Ellis had the most significant impact and made the greatest contribution towards shaping the building and its grounds. In 1897 Tankerton Castle, as it was now known, was sold to Thomas Adams. He added a billiard room to the North of the original tower. This provided a good room with feature fireplace on the ground floor with servants’ quarters upstairs but obstructed the fine sea views of Whitstable Bay. Later this became the Council Chamber.
In 1921 the Castle passed into the hands of Mr Albert Mallandain. A paper manufacturer, he and his wife used it as a summer residence. Changes were made in the building, with a fine new staircase and extensive additional oak panelling to match original designs. The Whitstable Urban District Council, despite some opposition, bought the Castle for the town in 1935.
Following the local government re-organisation in 1972, the Castle remained empty until 1975 when at the instigation of The Whitstable Society the "Castle Centre Association" was created with the aim of using The Castle for the benefit of the people of Whitstable. In 2004 a new committee with its first Castle Co-ordinator began a complete interior upgrade and Weddings and Civil Ceremonies could commence. This brought in much needed income to regenerate the Castle and enable it to return to its original role as a venue for family celebrations, major local events and community activities. A heritage Lottery Grant enabled a new Trust to be formed in 2008 to take over the running of the Castle and Gardens.

Charlton House in Greenwich, London was built between 1607 and 1612 by Sir Adam Newton, Charlton House is one of the finest examples of Jacobean domestic architecture in the country.
The house and grounds were used as a hospital for officers during World War I and were bought by the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich in 1925. The North (Chapel) Wing was bombed during the Blitz of the Second World War and was subsequently rebuilt albeit with non-matching bricks such as were available in the immediate post-war period.

Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich, Suffolk is a beautiful Tudor mansion with over 500 years of history. Christchurch Mansion is built on the site of the Holy Trinity Priory, founded in the 12th century.
In 1894 the mansion was bought by Felix Cobbold from a syndicate of property developments to save the building from demolition. Cobbold, a wealthy local businessman and philanthropist, then offered to give it to the Ipswich Corporation to establish a Museum and Art Gallery. His offer was on condition that the Corporation buy the surrounding parkland for the people of Ipswich. It took Cobbold three attempts to get the corporation to agree to this, but in February 1895 the mansion was transferred to the town and in April 1895 the Corporation purchased the central part of the park. The corporation acquired the Upper Arboretum in 1928.
Ghostly activity
One of the most commonly sighted ghosts is a young Edwardian lady who is seen dancing and laughing in the upper picture gallery of Christchurch Mansion. Often she is said to be accompanied by a couple of happy children.
There is also another female spirit that is seen downstairs in the mansion. Many a visitor has been shocked when the apparition of a lady in grey suddenly appears and swishes right by them in a full-length gown.
It is believed that the young lady passed away in the house under mysterious circumstances!
In 1995, there were reports of paintings turning themselves round on the wall and a Victorian woman seen moving through glass doors!
