Fort Borstal – 31st October 2014 (Kym)

Thursday, January 8th, 2015

Fort Borstal 31st October 2014
Rochester, Kent
Halloween Special

Area: Counterscarp ‘Dungeon’
Equipment: KII’s, Ghost Pro’s, Dowsing Rods, Pendulums, Writing Planchette & Glass Work
This was a new area, of which we had only investigated on our recent live event, so was interested in what spirits liked to do here.

Group D – We started with the writing planchette as some of the guests had done that before, but unfortunately initially no movement.  We then switched to glass work and we had a male spirit wishing to communicate with us.  He had been married with children, lived in Kent, had passed over from an illness before the 1800’s, he was over 60 years old.  Asking spirit if they would like to use the writing planchette, with a yes we tried again.  We had a lot of writing, his initials were possibly M or W, he wrote the guests initials, he also copied a triangle and number 8 that I had drawn on a pad, not showing the guests, on to the paper.  He then copied what the guests were thinking in their head.  The planchette started tipping up randomly too.  We did hear a bang in the room next to us.  The spirit finished the session with lots of random patterns on the paper.  The spirit felt happy for us to be there.

Group A – Started with the writing planchette, and again received lots of random drawings, nothing too specific, except one of the guests initials when asked.  Some guests were using the rods and pendulums, and were asking spirit questions.  Two guests, when comparing information after, had both got the initial D for the spirit, and the name Daniel.  Remembering my previous session, we had got the letter D a few times on the paper.  Just when I thought it might be a good time to experiment, I asked Carol (guest) to write something down for the spirit to copy (she was standing away from the table), and at that point the planchette stopped, and Louise (guest) felt a thump on her side.  It was as if the spirit thought “sod this, I’m off!”.  We did get some slight movement with the glass, but decided to try table tipping briefly.  Just before we started though Emma (guest) heard a gust of wind pass her (no windows/doors open to cause this).  We did get quite a bit of lifting on the table.

Group B – Glass work – drew the letter I for initial – name Ian – yes.  British soldier connected to the fort, fought in France in WW1, but died in Kent of natural causes aged over 70.  He died in Medway Hospital, and at this point one of the guests, Amanda, asked if she had cared for him when she worked there.  Yes – in Keats Ward where she worked.  Asked if Byron ward – no.  He died in 1999 when she was a student nurse there, but she couldn’t remember him as she had cared for the elderly and many had passed.  He did confirm there were 9 spirits with us, and he knew them.
Group C – With my last group we started with the rods & pendulums.  Again asking spirit questions.  We tried the writing planchette but had no movement.  Tried the glass, and had some slight movement, but not enough to ask questions.  We then tried some table tipping and had a few lifts/tilts.

Landguard Fort – 4th October 2014 (Kym)

Landguard Fort ghost hunt 4th October 2014
Felixstowe, Suffolk

Area: Guard House with adjoining cell to rear
Equipment: Writing Planchette, KII’s, Ghost Pro’s, Dowsing Rods, Pendulums

Group B – I had been looking forward to coming back to Landguard Fort since our last visit in April. One of my favourite places and I started by showing the guests how to use the rods and pendulums.  Once everyone had established their yes & no’s, we asked spirit who they were.  We had a male soldier, British and over 50.  We asked spirit to point the rods to where he was standing, and three of the four rods all pointed in the same direction.  We did use the Ghost Pro too which was answering questions.  We then moved to the cell and tried the writing planchette, but no movement, however some of us were swaying whilst kneeling on the floor and leaning on the table.  We did hear noises and footsteps near us, and were feeling cold breezes.  With just 10 minutes left we moved to the shower area and spent a little time in there.

Group C – With my next group we started with the rods & pendulums and had a lot of movement.  Most guests had a male spirit, but one person had a female.  The male was again a British Soldier, and had died here in battle.  One guest’s pendulum was rotating continuously in very large circles, and would change direction when asked.  We asked spirit to do this to the rods, and all started rotating, slowly, but kept going all the way round.  Again we asked spirit to point the rods to where he was standing, and they pointed to the same place as previous group.  We moved to the cell but had no movement on the writing planchette, so we took the Ouija table to the bathroom.  Although the glass didn’t move, the table was gently rocking whilst everyone’s fingers were on the glass.  Some guests were being swayed too.  With 10 minutes left we all moved to another room and whilst doing so two guests saw a shadow of someone move across opposite.  They both went to check but no-one there.  We did all go into another room for just a short while, but with no movement on the Ouija stopped for break.

Group A – With the last controlled session we started with the rods & pendulums, and had lots of movement.  We then tried the writing planchette in the cell, and almost immediately it started moving.  We asked spirit to give their initials, and although not too clear we think it was either an S or P for their first name, and a Z for their second.  Then we asked spirit to copy the shape a guest had a drawn on paper (she was not on the planchette and didn’t show anyone).  A triangle was drawn by the planchette, a star was what we had asked for – quite close.  We asked spirit to copy again, this time a Z, but the planchette drew a circle with a square around it.  One guest who had a digital recorder hanging around his neck felt it being pulled.  We then spent the last few minutes back in the main room quietly, asking spirit to affect us, make a noise, etc.  One guest felt he was pushed a couple of times.
In the free session I joined a group of guests in the map room on the ouija table, although there was only small movements with the glass, we were hearing and feeling lots of thuds underneath the table.  Gill (guest) was also feeling taps on her back.  We then did try some table tipping, and got lots of rocking followed by the table tipping up and spinning around.

Rye Castle ghost hunt – 27th August 2014

Tuesday, November 11th, 2014

Rye Castle ghost hunt 23rd August 2014
Rye, East Sussex

After splitting the guests into two groups, I headed upstairs to the first floor of the Keep, the other headed into the Women’s Tower.

After starting a séance we were joined by a spirit called Paul, who I described as being a local rogue, aged in his late 30s and of a large build, shaven head and a scar on his left cheek.

There was also a young spirit of a soldier who did not interact with us.

During the séance the guests had their arms moved and were gently pushed and pulled. A couple of occasions the people either side of me were pulled to the floor.

Towards the end of the session I noticed an older female spirit had entered the room and at this point Ted (the Museum Guide) had to leave the room as he said he felt odd.

The second group experienced some more arm movement; lots more than the first group although there was no pushing or being pulled to the floor.

During the séance we all heard some odd noises and saw strange lights within the room that upon investigation we could not find any explanation for these oddities.

After this we all headed into the garden (the old exercise yard) to do an experiment with a Spirit Box (a device that scans the FM radio frequencies in reverse at 100ms). Many of our questions we all heard an intelligent answer.

Some of the guests after this session held Glass and Table tilting sessions, other ventured on their own throughout the Keep to try their hand at ghost hunting and to take photos.

This was once again a very enjoyable ghost hunt with all the guests experiencing paranormal activity in some form.

Fort Horsted ghost hunt – 22-3-2014 (Kym)

Friday, April 4th, 2014

Fort Horsted ghost hunt 22nd March 2014
Chatham, Kent

Area: 10 Equipment: KII’s, Ghost Pro’s, Dowsing Rods, Pendulums, Writing Planchette

Group B  – Kerry (team) joined me on my first session and we started with explaining to guests how to use the pendulums and dowsing rods.  Almost immediately we had movement on all, and the guests were able to establish their yes & no’s, which they enjoyed immensely asking questions to spirit.  I then suggested we split the group so three girls joined Kerry on the writing planchette whilst I took the remaining five guests into the opposite room.  We continued using the pendulums, but also used the ghost pro.  We then re-joined the others as they were experiencing a lot of movement with the writing, and some other guests joined in.  As all the writing received seemed to be random, we turned the paper over and asked spirit to write the initial of one of the persons present.  Immediately we had the letter J – and Julie (guest) was very surprised.  We then asked for another initial of a guest, and to Calum’s surprise a C was drawn.  We then joined everyone else in the tunnel, and some guests could smell burning, and another guest felt a touch on her back.

Group C – I was joined by Carl (team) on my second session who was filming for us.  After handing out the rods & pendulums we received movement with them.  Then we tried the writing planchette again.  Although we had movement, not as much as before, it was just random squiggles.  Whilst standing around the table one guest felt a touch on her back.  I took three guests into the opposite room with ghost pro, explained how to use it, and once they had contact with spirit they went to explore the tunnel.  Carl started feeling unwell so he left the area.  The remaining three guests returned and tried the planchette, whilst the others went to explore the tunnel.  One of the guests could feel the energy behind her and had the name Victor in her head, and asking spirit if that was his name we started to get movement on the writing planchette.  With no more movement I placed a ghost pro on the table, and one of the guests was sure she saw it move.  I said it was possible as I recalled an incident in that room many months before when I had placed a camera on the table and we all had seen it move.  The five guests then returned from the tunnel and said that two of them had been touched on the back of knee within 4 minutes of each.

Group A – With my last group, all four ladies were showing an enormous fear of the spiders in that area.  We entered very slowly, pointing out where not to stand, and everyone felt comfortable to enter one of the rooms.  I handed out the rods & pendulums and all received some movement.  One guest in particular who had used the rods before was able to ask spirit yes & no questions from the start.  We had a male soldier with us, and when asking if he would join us on the table with the writing planchette, he answered yes.  Whilst asking spirit to move the planchette we could hear the table creaking underneath.  With fingers on the planchette and a hand on table, we could feel gently rocking on both.  We then all took a break and one of the guests asked spirit to copy her whistle, and we all heard what sounded like a female whistle back.  As two of the guests had left the area because of her fear of the spiders, we had to check it wasn’t them, but they were standing outside and hadn’t even heard us whistle out, and had definitely not made a sound themselves.  We did ask spirit to repeat the noise but nothing.  All six of us then walked up the tunnel, and some noises and taps were heard.

I then joined Steve, Kerry & guests in area 26, and we did a séance circle.  I was holding hands with Louise (guest) to my left.  She had been reluctant to join in as before she had felt sick whilst in the circle, but I persuaded her to join in.  I started feeling a heavy weight on my left shoulder, and Steve said we had the spirit of Justin behind us.  He was very large and had been a prisoner.  I asked Justin to move the weight onto Louise’s shoulder as I didn’t want her to think I was pulling her down, and to her surprise, and my relief, the heavy weight moved to her right shoulder.  We were then pushed down to the floor, and Louise thanked spirit and asked to be moved back up.  I then suggested she ask spirit to move to her left shoulder which it did.  She then asked for spirit to move to her son Calum’s shoulder which it did.  Louise continued to ask Justin to move us in various ways, which he was very happy to oblige.  Meanwhile the remainder of people in the circle were being moved by two other spirits, and we all ended up being moved in various, and sometimes funny positions.

A great end to a memorable night!

Fort Borstal ghost hunt – 4-5-2013

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 4th May 2013
Rochester, Kent

We are finding that every time we investigate Fort Borstal, the activity that is experienced by the guests is getting greater and more frequent and certain rooms have certain experiences which are consistent.

This ghost hunt was one of those nights. I, as usual, had the Counterscarp Galleries as my zone for the night, as this is the most physically demanding with 200+ steps to descend and ascend.

However the walk is definitely worth it, as these counterscarp galleries are rather active and being that this area is underground it is always rather dark!

All three groups witnessed the same spirits and activity

The spirits that were present were; Captain Daniel Bedford, a soldier. Tony, a rather mean looking prisoner from when the Fort was built and his accomplice “Biffa” or Bernard, both these prisoners were in their early 30s and both were of a muscular build.

The activity of all groups in a seance usually started with some gentle arm movement and then pushing and pulling people in all manner of directions, usually in a surprising way that the guest had no idea what would be experienced next, sometimes I had an inkling what would happen to a particular person, but I too was surprised by what most of the guests experienced. This ranged from the gentle arm movement, to people be swayed and rocked, to people being pulling to the floor by their arms and in some cases dragged across the floor, those that ending up on the floor had difficulty and in some cases it was impossible to get up off the floor. Many guests reported that it felt like someone was sitting on them. There were also lots of instances of people being pushed against the walls; this was unusual because it looked very much like an execution.

Although not all the activity was extreme physical behaviour many times throughout the night, with different groups, several people arms and hands were pulled to the floor and “draw” a smiley face in the dust. Which many guests felt this was an odd thing to do.

This was an exceptionally active night, with every guest getting some form of physical paranormal activity that amazed them.

Fort Borstal ghost hunt – 29-3-2013

Friday, May 17th, 2013

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 29th March 2013
Rochester, Kent

Every time we return to Fort Borstal the event gets more interesting, more stuff happens to more people, this time around was no different, although this time the activity that happened wasn’t pleasant.

I usually hold my sessions in the counterscarp galleries because just getting there is a physical challenge in itself, 232 steps to be precise, but to me it is a really interesting area where paranormal occurrences are normal.

The first session there was a male spirit present called Capt Daniel Bedford, he is a spirit who I have often seen in the counterscarp galleries. He is a tall slim built First World War soldier who carries a crop and undoubtedly would have used this as part of his command style. The resulting séance started with people feeling a tingling sensation in their hands and arms, which progressed to their arms actually moving (which is what I asked for amongst other phenomena). After the majority of people felt their arms move, Daniel became braver with his actions and many people saw their own hands being rubbed across the chins of other guests and themselves. These actions also increased along with the phenomena of being pushed and pulled backwards which to some guests was unnerving as they had no idea when this would affect them. Many times various different people’s arms would fly across to hit Ross (guest) in the face, but fortunately every time he was able to duck and dive out of the way as I could feel or know when a lunge was coming. Cold spots were also felt by the guests, which in this particular fort is unusual because all the exterior holes are sealed and the weather outside has no impact on the conditions felt inside.

There was also another male spirit energy present, his name was David and he was a convict, he approached us with caution and did not interact although he did speak to me briefly. He was a Cockney and of a stocky build.

The second session that I undertook in the counterscarp galleries more or less started how the first finished. The same spirit energies were present and the séance started with arm movements almost immediately interspersed with pushing and pulling sensations, twisting and turning people into odd positions and dragging them downwards on to the floor. Once again many people felt cold spots and breezes which are unusual. Many people arms were moved in such a way that it looked like they were trying to be strangled by other people’s arms. Other guests were moved and pushed towards the wall. Several attempts were made to lunge at people, although once again I could feel it coming 1 or 2 seconds before the action took place and could warn whichever guest the action was intended for. However there was a moment when my attention was gravitated towards another young male spirit who should not have been there and needed help. He was a young (17 years old) male who passed away during a relatively recent (1997) motorcycle crash on a road not far from the Fort and whilst I was engaged with him and trying to help him a lunge of people’s arms hit one of my team members in the face (Kym) and then the second lunge which was more like a punch hit a guest in the shoulder.

During the séance Matt (guest) saw light orbs and another guest felt very aggressive, as I have met this guest on several of our ghost hunts I knew that this was not in his nature and I called an immediate end to the séance. The guest that felt aggressive asked me to come over to him as he “wasn’t feeling right” and I gave him some emergency healing to take away the aggression. As everyone was recovering from the active séance we could all hear a strange mumbling noise which included the sound of whistles and whispering. The whispering sound seem to come from further along the tunnel in the direction of the other counterscarp gallery.

When I asked whether the guests would like to walk down to those galleries some guests didn’t want to venture down there on their own! So we all went down to that area, although nothing was seen or heard once we arrived.

After these sessions the guests were allowed to wander freely, some but not many wanted to go back to the counterscarps and I joined a group in the Officer’s Mess area. Various spirits were encountered in this area, the majority looked to be female Nurses or Second World War clerks. Carl (GHE team member) who was sitting in a chair noticed that the chair was swaying and moving which he found odd although his instruments detected high levels of EMF and huge temperature fluctuations which coincided with the chair moving.

This was a very enjoyable ghost hunt where the majority of guests had a very unusual night and many paranormal occurrences. This was one of our more memorable ghost hunts at this location and everybody thoroughly enjoyed the experience, even those who were pushed to the floor or lunged at.

Several EVP’s (Electronic voice phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiments were undertaken by the team but we have not had any confirmation from our experts of actual ghost voices.

Fort Borstal ghost hunt, Rochester – 20-10-2012

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 20th October 2012
Fort Borstal, Rochester, Kent

Fort Borstal is one of those sites as a Ghost Hunt company we never thought we would be able to investigate, because it is privately owned. However we were nicely surprised after the owners contacted us wanting to know whether we would be interested in investigating their Fort.

Considering this is one of the five that was built especially to protect Chatham and we already investigate Fort Horsted (which is the largest) we were very keen to see what this Fort had in terms of spiritual activity. We were not disappointed.

The approach to this Fort is strange, not least because of the lack of lighting and it certainly looks a scary place upon arrival and as my team said to me, very atmospheric.

For this ghost hunt we had three distinctly different areas to investigate; The Caponier, which as the worst staircase in the world to navigate, 92 steps down (and back up!), The Officers Mess, which was a secret area even to those soldiers stationed there in The Second World War and a third underground Caponier.

My area for the night was the main Caponier (with the wonderful staircase [sic])

The first group had varying degrees of activity on our electronic equipment; some spikes of KII activity and some communication, but I thought it would be better to hold a séance since this particular place doesn’t get any people visiting and the energy levels would naturally be low.

A male energy by the name of Thomas came forward, he told me that he was a Colour Sergeant (Sergeant Major) in the Army. He was about 6’2” aged in his 20s and of stocky build and he was wearing civilian clothing (a blue shirt). He also gave me the impression that he was a funny character and had a wicked sense of humour. The was also another male energy present; Dave a private. Both were from the Second World War era.

During the séance many voices, mumbling and footsteps were heard, although given where the other two groups were, no person on site could have been responsible for these noises.

Both Thomas and Dave treated most of the guests to some gentle arm movement as they in turn went from one person to another to manipulate them.

At the end of the séance I conducted an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiment. Due to the natural echo because of the long tunnels cancelling out the background noise was quite difficult, as was listening for ghost voices, however the clearest and most audible from this session can be heard at:-

http://youtu.be/9euwDXfViZc

The Second group I took to the other end of the Caponier (as it is a double Caponier).  Almost immediately there was good communication from our electronic equipment but no KII spikes. During the resulting séance a WWII Soldier by the name of Jeremy came forward and was able to move some of the guests arms. There was also a female energy present, aged about 20 years old and called Isabelle. During the séance we heard lots of noises, some in the tunnels and one very loud sound that came from the dry moat, this sounded like wood being banged (an impact sound). Several whistles we also heard, although when we heard them no-one could say in which direction the sound came from.

The Third group I took to the same area as the first group, although very little happened because the group were busy laughing and joking with each other and paying little interest to the reason why we were there i.e. ghost hunting.

The strangest sound that we heard was the sound of footfalls, as if someone was approaching but given the staircase and the fact that it was dark, we would have easily seen someone approach, as they would have needed a torch to navigate the staircase.

After we finished our controlled part of the night, we let the guests (under supervision) return to any area which they enjoyed or wanted to experience again in a smaller group or on their own.

I spent some time with another member of my team in the Officer’s Mess just for about 10 minutes or so but during those 10 minutes the both of us heard; a door slam (there are no doors to slam), lots of footsteps, knocking sounds and female voices. We also did several EVP recordings as there was a male energy present who seemed to be of great importance. This energy didn’t like either of us being there and made us feel uncomfortable. Carl who was listening with sound enhancement equipment heard some responses when I asked whether this spirit energy was from Yorkshire. Carl heard “go” “leave” and some laughing.

I too also heard sounds but couldn’t hear any words although I did have a strange chemical taste in my mouth. We both also saw some strange lights further along the corridor.

On analysing our EVP recordings the following results can be heard at:-

http://youtu.be/CZe02y2bBJw
http://youtu.be/ad4R00PIaHE

After this the remaining guests joined us in this area to experience the same feelings that we had both just felt. Although the uncomfortable feeling had dissipated, probably due to the fact that any area isn’t scary when there are lots of people about, we did hear some noises, taps, knocking, whistles and some loud bangs.

However one of the guests did capture a strange photograph, which seems to have the shape of a person at the end of the corridor. Both the photographs below are copyrighted to Emma Coyle.

All in all a very enjoyable ghost hunt, especially since we were the first ghost hunting company to investigate Fort Borstal, hopefully future visits to this location we will have more activity experienced by us and our guests.
