Old Police Cells Museum ghost hunt – 01-02-2014

Sunday, February 2nd, 2014

The Old Police Cells Museum 1st February 2014
Brighton, East Sussex

On the previous two occasions that we have visited the Old Police Cells the activity has been really great but sporadic with some people getting lots more activity than others and different rooms having different sensations.

However this evening that changed for the better, lots of activity was experienced by the guests in all areas, albeit some of the activity was exceptional.

I had chosen the sub-sub-basement for two reasons, firstly this was the most interesting area to me as it is quite a big space and there are quite a few “active” areas and secondly it was also the coolest area, the temperature down here was a pleasant 15 degrees Celsius. Upstairs it was closer to 25.

On previous occasions there have been two areas where guests have stood on their own and unusual things have happened to them, nothing sinister but also unexpected. I held all my sessions in this area.

The spirit that we present here remained throughout the whole evening with every group, one was a male spirit energy called Tommy in his late-30s who was about 5’10” in height. He also wore a “warehouse” style brown three-quarter length jacket and seemed to be from the early 1900s. He never actually told me the year but I assumed this based on the way he spoke and acted.

The second was a very well dressed man with a large stature, he never told me his name, as he seemed disinterested in telling me. He was about 6’ in height and of a portly build, and he had a full length bushy beard. Wearing a smart three piece black suit, he had the air of authority about him and at first I thought he was a councillor however it later transpired he was a council solicitor who wrote law reports and documents for the council. The area in which we were standing was where all the law report books were stored, some dating back to the early 1800s.

The first group to this area we started a séance circle and almost immediately after I asked for Tommy to move us in some way, Mark (guest) was pushed backwards against the shelving and he stated that he could not lift himself back upright. At around the same time both of my hands started to lift (which is nothing unusual, as spirit usually start with me) Jeanette (guest) however was not expecting this as she was holding my right hand. Kerry (GHE team) who was on my left wasn’t surprised and very quickly Tommy was able to move our arms into more uncomfortable positions!

As Tommy became more confident and more adept at moving us he progressed the activity around the circle with other guests having their hands moved or being gently swayed or rocked, some people were pushed backwards into more of the book shelves.

Whilst all this was happening several of us heard some odd noises, these ranged from footfall sounds to the sound of various things being clicked or dropped and one particularly loud noise which everyone heard, sounded like a pebble being rolled across the floor.

Several times the two people either side of me were dragged (by our arms) to the floor and my hands being dragged across the floor, fortunately there was (this time) a piece of paper on the floor which protected my knuckles from scraping across the floor.

Carl (GHE Team & Camera) was supposed to be filming this session but due to a problem with the camera it just didn’t want to work, so Carl was standing at the end of the shelving looked back towards us. Many time he heard the sound of something around him and every time this was due to the well-dressed solicitor spirit. On one occasion Carl felt a prod in the back of neck. This is something which has happened to other guests who have stood in this spot on previous investigations.

After we finished the séance I asked everyone to stand in between the book shelves as on previous occasions people have felt physical sensations. It is always much better in my opinion when people are not part of a séance circle to be touched or moved as the guests generally cannot find any logical reason for this.

Those guests who stood with their backs near to the wall facing out all felt the same sensation. This was the sensation of being pulled back which can be quite unnerving when standing in total darkness!

Whilst the guests were taking turns to stand in these areas noises kept being heard from the only entrance to this room. It was unfortunate that this wasn’t recorded but this is relatively normal, when good activity happens it is rare to have it filmed.

The second group to this area, we started the séance circle in much the same area, Tommy once again joined us very quickly as did the Solicitor spirit, although he stood closer this time. The two people standing either side of me (both called Emma) felt their arms being gently lifted which surprised them both a little as neither was expecting this to happen so quickly. This very quickly progressed around certain people in the circle and then Tommy started to rock, sway and push people which they were not expecting because all of sudden people would feel their balance go and then would fall into the person standing next to them.

Once again some of the guests were pushed backwards into the book shelves and Emma (the one on my right) was dragged by our arms to the floor again, however this time the sheet of paper wasn’t underneath my hand and my knuckles were dragged across the floor. This wasn’t painful to start with but became painful!

Tommy quickly tired of trying to move some people, however the Solicitor chap stepped in and started to move my arm in a purposeful method (Emma, on the right). I asked the guests to then use our arms as a pointer to ask simple yes and no questions. So a yes was pointing at one person, a no another person.

Several questions were asked by the guests and this is when it transpired that this spirit was a Solicitor, he also didn’t like his job as he found it boring. We also found out that he was a local man who in his day lived in the countryside (now this is part of Brighton) and that he was married and had two boys. Apparently he lived a happy life, but just didn’t enjoy his job.

After quickly looking through the wash room area so that the guests could read some of the macabre stories about the Museum and the murders and criminals who were imprisoned here we finished the session.

The third group, who have attended numerous ghost hunts with us and are collectively called “The Boo Club” I didn’t need to explain what we were about to do. However several people who will remain anonymous were very jumpy looking down to the entrance of the room, they kept saying that it “freaked them out” and none of them really wanted to stand with their backs to the doorway. Both spirits were still present and very quickly started to move and lift our arms, some of the positions were more painful than others and the spirit were able to move the majority of people. Rusty (guest & new member of the Boo Club) stood next to me because he wanted to experience the movements, the rest of the guests had no problem with this as they knew what was going to happen!

Very quickly the whole group were being manipulated and arms twisted and entangled with each other and people forced to move into extremely painful positions, at one point two guests (who usually stand together, Mark & Darren) who this time stood far away from each other each ended up on the floor, both of them were pushed down wards by their heads and both at one point but at different times had their heads touching the floor. Several times various people were pushed into others and at one point most of us were on the floor on top of someone else, this proved to be a lot of amusement for Carl (who was now successfully filming) and the two spirit energies.

In a rare moment when were we all standing upright, after being pulled one by one around the circle, we all heard a loud crash of paperwork, everyone in the room was suddenly very awake and alert and Carl was swearing. This was because a box file of paperwork which was on the top shelf above Carl suddenly fell or jumped from its position on the shelf and landed on the opposite side on the gangway (so really not a fall, as things don’t fall in arcs, unless pushed). Even though it happened in front of Carl it wasn’t recorded because the box file fell above the camera’s view point. Which is a great shame, but you can definitely hear the sound and the resulting swearing on the video!

After we finished getting up from the floor for the fifth or sixth time, I suggested that people stand at the end of the gangways to see if something would happen to them, like the first group. The majority of people who stood in a particular spot all got pushed or pulled, some quite violently, which did unnerve them.

After briefly spending time in the washroom part of this area, as there was a spirit in the wash rooms who didn’t like us and impolitely asked us to leave. He was a Policeman from the 1970s who seemed to have the belief that he was a Policeman “do as I say” not “what I do” personality.

After our controlled sessions finished all guests were allowed then to venture throughout the building and hold their own ghost hunt or participate in activities they enjoyed during our controlled sessions and as always we let them use our ghost hunting equipment.

This was a very enjoyable ghost hunt with the majority of the guests having some form of physical paranormal activity happen to them.

Rye Castle (Ypres Tower) ghost hunt – 28-9-2013

Rye Castle private ghost hunt 28th September 2013
Rye, East Sussex

We as a team were heading back to Rye with a sense of uneasiness because the first event that we held here this year was an action packed amazing experience for everyone who was present, then we returned a month after that and whilst the level of activity was still interesting it was nothing like the first event. So we were a little cautious in getting our hopes up. However since this was a private event, the majority of the people have been on a ghost hunt before we didn’t have to show the guests what to do, they knew. This however didn’t prepare anyone for what happened.

Whilst half of the guests headed into the Women’s Tower with Carl, I stayed in the Keep with the other half.

During my explanation of the room, as there are two cells in two corners and a balcony which overlooks the courtyard I was standing on the balcony explaining to the guests the metal prongs which stopped anyone from climbing the walls. I was using my torch to show some of the guests where they were and undoubtedly shone my torch into the women’s tower skylight. However Carl came out of the tower as they had seen a light above them (which was my torch) but they had also saw a light shine up the staircase, which could not have been me because the entrance to the staircase is 90 degrees from where I was standing.

Back inside the keep we were joined by a spirit called Tommy or Thomas, quite recently a spirit from 1988 aged in his 50s and quite broad shouldered and well built.

Whilst using KII (EMF meters) and our electronic communicator meters we all noticed a strange “ball” of energy in the room, it seemed to start about 2 feet off the floor and extend to about 7 feet above the floor and was approximately 8 feet in diameter that suddenly “arrived” at the same time as Tommy. It was also centred in the room right over some of the display cases, which although had an electrical supply, these were all turned off as I checked to make sure. There was no obvious explanation as to why this ball should be there as we have never had something like this happen before and as quickly as it arrived it disappeared. It was only after talking to Ted (the Museum guide) later in the evening that he suggested the tie ring. The tie ring was in the centre of the room and prisoners were tied to this ring when there was no room in a cell.

Tommy though was able to say several words on a spirit box (a device that scans the FM radio bands at 100ms in reverse) including “Tom” and answered some questions posed by the guests.

After a short break I demonstrated what I had done in the first group with regard to the torch as those in the Women’s Tower were a little confused how my torch managed to shine up the staircase and no matter what I pointed the torch towards the light never shone up the staircase, which sort of proves that it wasn’t me. Although no-one had any idea what they saw the first time as my torch looked completely different apparently and according to those who saw it my torch wasn’t that bright either.

The second group to the Keep we still had Thomas present and once I started a séance circle he was able to move people’s arms very easily. He also pulled Darren (guest) downwards and backwards so that he was resting on the table behind him in an awkward manner. Tom also pulled Mark, Darren, Esther and me to the floor by our arms, then without any warning pulled Jo down as well. Once we were on the floor we were all still being moved and twisted although Darren remained in an awkward position much to his delight [sic].

Eventually we were allowed to stand back upright and more or less as soon as we got to our feet, Esther and Jo were both moved in a swaying circular motion. Others of the group had our heads pushed down by other people’s hands and arms and Darren had his head and ear “stroked”. My hands were pulled in opposite directions which was quite painful and also pulled behind other people’s backs. Whilst this was amusing for us it was also fun for the spirit energy as he smiled throughout the session obviously enjoying what he could do with us.

After another break I headed with a group to the Women’s Tower as I wanted to see if the same sensations and noises that I had heard on previous ghost hunts happened again.

On the top floor everyone felt the same swaying and pushing sensation. No matter where anyone stood, everyone felt the same sensation and that was being pushed or pulled towards the corner of the room by the only window. This is exactly what happened when we first visited earlier in the year, which was just after the tower had undergone some building work. Whilst we were here we all heard a familiar noise, footsteps. However like the previous time I visited this tower the footsteps sounded like someone walking on a wooden floor and since the tower is detached from anything else this sound still remains a mystery.

Darren felt a female energy at the bottom of the stairs was too afraid to enter the building, so we went downstairs to see if this would make any difference.

Since we were all in the small downstairs room no-one was expecting to hear the sound of a person walking on gravel (which is what is in the garden, the previous exercise yard) but that is exactly what we heard, someone approaching, but no-one did. Then we all heard a stone thrown into the Women’s Tower which landed a few steps in. We checked but no-one was outside nor on the balcony to the keep. Immediately after the stone being thrown we all heard the sound of water being poured from a jug as we heard a “glug glug” sound plus several bangs. Darren and Mark went to investigate upstairs as they thought that the noise came from upstairs, however they didn’t stay long because they kept hearing footsteps and other noises that we didn’t hear nor make because we were standing still.

As soon as they came back down to join the rest of us both Carl & Ted thought they heard the footsteps on gravel sound. Although most of us thought it sounded like it was raining, however when going outside it wasn’t raining or windy.

Back in the keep once again lots of KII spikes seen on our meters plus lots of electronic communication.

There was a soldier present in the room, but not a uniform that I have ever seen before. He was wearing a bright red jacket with a white belt (similar to a Boer war soldier) and a black fez style cap. It is the cap that puzzles me because it didn’t look like it belonged to the rest of the uniform.

We recorded a spirit box session and EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voices) but on analysis nothing tangible could be heard.

This was a great ghost hunt with lots of strange and paranormal occurrences for the guests and it also had a familiar feel for us, because we have investigated here five times previously and every time we have similar activity, not necessarily the same activity from the previous time but something that has occurred on a previous visit happens in a similar way or the experiences of the guests happens again. We cannot wait to investigate here again in 2014.

Fort Horsted ghost hunt 21-9-2013

Fort Horsted ghost hunt 21st September 2013
Chatham, Kent

As ever the team always like returning to Fort Horsted as we always have interesting nights, sometimes though the ghost hunt is exceptional, this was one of those nights!

After separating the group into teams of three we set off to our nominated areas, I usually choose one of two areas, but for this event I had chosen I room that I first had a great experience, as did the guests that were with me.

The room was one of the old magazine rooms and the farthest walk from the rest of the groups so we could be fairly sure that there would be no noise pollution.

We were joined by Geoffrey, a lieutenant in the Army from the Second World War, he was aged in his late-20s or early 30s and came from Lincolnshire. Also present was another Second World War soldier called Paul who was a quieter or shy spirit. Both of them seem to have a funny side to their nature.

On asking these spirits to touch or move people slowly some people’s arms started to move and quite quickly various people’s arms started to stroke the arms of other people in the séance circle as well as pushing people’s chins up (as if to say stand up straight). Some guests arms were pulled to the floor and hands dragged on the floor.

One of the spirits kept calling one of the guests “Teddy Bear” which at first I ignored but after a while realised there must be a reason for this and told the male guest what the spirit was telling him. He was a little surprised because there was a family link with the phrase Teddy Bear.

I moved around the circle as some people on the opposite side of the circle to me were not feeling any movement. Once I had moved various people on this side of the circle started to feel their arms move and on command and once again there was some gentle pushing and pulling back felt by the guests. Some people were also dragged to the floor by their arms and had their hands dragged on the floor. Those that didn’t get dragged to the floor had felt the spirit energies gently rock them, either forwards and backwards or side to side.

During this séance we all heard footsteps further down the corridor, usually this sounds like someone approaching which is exactly what we heard but as ever no-one arrives. There were also sounds of chatter or mumbling but because of the acoustics of the room it is very hard to know which direction the sounds are coming from.

At the end of the session I held an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiment. During the recording we all heard a strange whistle after one person spoke, although nothing was recorded. There were several ghost voices on the recording but unfortunately many of them were either too quiet or tainted with some other noise (either someone speaking or moving their feet). There were however two clear EVPs which can be heard at:-

http://youtu.be/NBL7voeb9CQ
http://youtu.be/BQNZUBQnBko

The second group to this area (of which some have been to this Fort before and other had been on other ghost hunts of ours) knew exactly what to do during the séance. The two spirits from the first session were still present and almost immediately after I asked for the guests arms to be moved, the spirits complied and moved lots of people arms and pushing them into uncomfortable positions. One guest (Darren) wanted to see how far the spirits could push him and it was no surprise to me, but he ended up on his back on the floor!

We were also joined by a different spirit; a Colour Sergeant or Sergeant Major (the terminology depends on the division), this particular spirit was a very strict man although he was able to move people with greater force and stood behind one particular guest (Mark), the reason for this was apparent afterwards. Mark could feel a strange coldness behind him and Jo (who was next to Mark) also felt a sharp stabbing pain in her back, she said like a needle was pressed into her back. Another guest was afraid to look at the only doorway into the room, but this is a normal experience and exactly why I chose this room because that is what has happened to the majority of the guests that come to this Fort.

The Colour Sergeant wouldn’t tell me his name, but he had the demeanour of a man that if he asked you to jump, you would say, how high? He was 6 foot tall, quite strong looking build and quite muscular, he wore a moustache and had long sideburns that were down to his chin. He also wore the usual green fatigues and a cap with a red stripe. He also held a knotted/rope thing which at the time I didn’t know what it was, but have since found out this was called a swagger stick.

The Colour Sergeant stood directly behind Mark and he commented that he felt a thumb pushed into his back. (After we finished the session Mark told me that his father would do exactly the same thing when he was younger).

When asking for any of the spirits to make a noise, everyone heard the sound of a footstep, which Darren and I heard a noise that came from directly between us and since we were both looking at the floor, we each knew that neither of us moved.

Some other guests heard breathing noises behind them which became very unnerving.

At the end of this session I held another EVP experiment and since the majority of this group had been on a ghost hunt, they knew to be quiet. There were lots of spirit voices after the questions asked but unfortunately not all of them we could understand but out of 8 people there were 4 clear responses which can be heard at:-

http://youtu.be/CxF6YFMmSfU
http://youtu.be/0SujixcN1so
http://youtu.be/OLIq0cq0b3Q
http://youtu.be/vDTrIeQRZq8

The third and final group session in this same room the spirit energy of the Colour Sergeant and Geoffrey joined us and once again asking for the spirit to move arms of the guests resulted in some gentle but purposeful movements, most of the time on command i.e. when people asked for their arms to be moved (in their heads) their arms moved, obviously there is no way the person who was holding their hand knew that one of them had asked and was surprised when both their arms moved.

There was also some gentle pushing and swaying which some of the guests found unnerving but I find it is an excellent way to prove that people are not doing it themselves because it is very difficult to sway backwards because if you were doing it yourself you would not be able to see or know what you would fall into.

There was also some rubbing of people arms and shoulders with other people’s hands and once again some people were pulled by their hands to the floor, many of which didn’t want to touch the floor but no matter what they said (the guests) they ended up with their hands on the floor.

This was the only session of mine which was filmed (see the link below) and whilst Jason (GHE team Cameraman) was standing in the doorway to the tunnel he could feel a spirit near to him, this was a female energy, a nurse called Annie which I have seen at this Fort before. There was also another soldier from the Second World War; Alfred standing behind Jason and he commented several times that he could hear whispering and movement behind him.

After our controlled sessions we allow (as always) the guests to venture off to any area of the Fort under our guidance so that they can hold their own vigil or ghost hunt and use our ghost hunting equipment.

I joined a group in an area known as casement 10 and there was a male spirit in his mid-50s wandering about the rooms, he is a maintenance man and I have seen him before in this area. Whilst nothing exciting happened, some noises we heard and the guests that were here felt uncomfortable because it felt like someone was watching them. Other groups that used this casement in earlier groups reported the same thing.

Several guests went to the most interesting part of the Fort; The Counterscarp Galleries and held a séance where two people were pushed to floor in a strange way.

This session was filmed and can be watched at: – http://youtu.be/1x5LFzjS1Co

The full event video can be watched at: – http://www.ghosthuntevents.tv/#clip=819617

This was a very active ghost hunt with all groups getting some excellent paranormal activity.

Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt – 10-8-2013

Thursday, October 24th, 2013

The Red Lion Hotel ghost hunt 10th August 2013
Colchester, Essex

We come to the Red Lion Hotel every few months because the amount of activity the guests encounter throughout the ghost hunt is usually very high, this particular evening the activity surpassed everything that we have done at The Red Lion Hotel before, especially in the cellar sessions which enabled the majority of the guests to feel what it was like to be moved and touched by spirit.

The first group to the cellar we were joined by a familiar male spirit energy, his name is Michael and he is a very playful and fun energy and he is able to make the guests feel his energy in all manner of different ways. Michael is a spirit who I have seen at various visits to the Red Lion Hotel. He showed himself as being in his mid-20s wearing a three piece with a white bow tie and wearing a top hat and adorned with a silver pocket watch.

Firstly we started with some gentle arm movement which was concentrated on the two people either side of me, one of the guests commented that she felt a strange tingling sensation in her hand as it moved. From this Michael progressed to moving people’s arms in more forceful and sometimes uncomfortable positions and started to pull people by their arms around the circle so that the guests were rocked and swayed. I then noticed another male spirit energy sitting at the far end of the tunnel on a little chair or stool. He was an old man, well- educated and spoke well, aged about 70 and spent most of the time laughing and giggling.

Some of the guests were now being pulled to the floor by their arms and being pushed into other people. Some guests thought they could here odd noises from the end of the tunnel, although on my side of the séance circle we didn’t hear anything because we were occupied with the strange movement forced on us by Michael.

Whilst most of us were relatively happy being pushed and pulled around by Michael, suddenly one side of the circle was pushed into those who weren’t feeling anything and our arms were being used to stroke faces and chins, then one girl was pushed or pulled to the floor backwards, much to her amazement and our surprise.

As most of us were on the floor I turned around to the guest behind me to ask what she said, to which she replied she didn’t say anything, but thought I had. I then asked what she had heard and others in the group also said that they all heard the same voice, which is what I heard and it was simple voice saying “Yeah”.

As the séance drew to a close, one person who was still on the floor was unable to get up, she said that it felt like someone was pushing her down and keeping her down. It took a while but eventually the person was able to stand without aid.

At the end of this session I held an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiment. The audible results of this can be found later in this report.

The second group to the cellar had probably the weirdest experience in the cellar for we were joined by Michael and the old man spirit energies who started to move people in much the same way as the first group. Although it didn’t take long before Michael was able to move all the guests and lift their arms, sometime on command but mostly into weird and uncomfortable positions.

Several guests reported feeling a sharp pain in their necks, similar to someone pushing their finger at the back of the neck.

It also didn’t take long for everyone to be moved in some way or had their faces stroked by the two people standing next to them.

Suddenly without any warning one of the guests burst into uncontrollable laughter and although she could hear herself and us, she had no idea when questioned why she was laughing or what caused her to laugh in the first place. Then as quickly as she started laughing she stopped and instead started crying and still she had no idea why.

I asked that Michael do the same thing to everyone at the same time and gave him visual clues as to what I wanted to happen, but I didn’t tell any of the guests. Slowly but surely everyone’s arms were raised to about shoulder height, some took a little longer than others but eventually everyone had their hands at shoulder height. I then asked for Michael to finish the manoeuvre and to my delight everyone’s hands were raised above their heads as this is exactly what I had asked.

More or less as soon as this movement was felt, the lady who was laughing and crying started to laugh again, only this time the laughs were proper belly laughs, similar to the laughing policeman song. Once again she had no idea why although when questioned further she said that one of the people’s face in the group made her laugh. What I found funny is that the person she was talking about is Sue (GHE team) and every time Sue looked at the guest she laughed even more.

Eventually the lady stopped laughing as the spirit energy was pulling all hands into the circle & swirling everyone’s hands around in an anti-clockwise circle until many of our hands became untwined with each other.

At the end of this session I also held another EVP experiment.

An edited version of the laughing / crying part of this session can be seen at http://youtu.be/HIFdYFB65hQ

The third group to the cellar had probably the least amount of movement, but that’s not to say they didn’t get moved. They did but it was much more controlled and less painful.

Michael was still present but the old man had left. Once again Michael moved various people’s arms mostly on command and what the guests asked for but quickly moved everyone’s hand that he could and put them wherever seemed to be the most embarrassing for all concerned. Many pairs of hand were placed behind the back of other people.

Some guests (as usual on this night) were pulled to the floor by their hands whilst other guests were stroking the faces and chins of other people.

The only thing that was different on this session is that the majority of people were pulled to the floor very quickly and once on the floor the movement just continued which was unlike the previous sessions where the movement stopped when on the floor. This time those of us on the floor still had our hands and arms moved. Even we the majority of guests were not on the floor there was a lot of swaying and pushing felt by the guests.

At the end of this session I conducted another EVP experiment.

The audible results all the groups EVP experiments can be heard below

Fort Borstal ghost hunt – 6-7-2013

Friday, August 9th, 2013

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 6th July 2013
Rochester, Kent

Fort Borstal is always an interesting ghost hunt for us as something that has never happened before usually happens to the guests however no one could have predicted what happened on this particular evening. As a team with a combined experience of over 100 years none of us have ever seen or witnessed anything that even comes close to what one particular guest experienced in the Caponier, however that will be covered in the second report by the paranormal investigators. However that doesn’t mean nothing of interest happened to the people with me on the contrary I too had a very unusual experience in the Counterscarp galleries…

The first group to the Counterscarp galleries we formed a séance circle in one of my favourite parts, it is actually the furthest room, not particularly big but usually the séance held here have a common theme, which I am very aware of and hence why I bring people to this area every time.

We were joined by a familiar spirit energy to this area; Captain Daniel Bedford who is a strict man however he also likes to make guests aware of his presence and he started by moving various peoples arms, sometimes on command other times of his own free will. He was also able to physically push some people. Using some people arms and hands he was able to rub the chins of some of the male guests, this is a common occurrence. He also tapped one particular guest three times on his head, very similar to the phrase “is anybody home”. Daniel was also able to slow punch two of the guests under the chin, as if to tell them to stand up straight. I and another guest were also pulled down so that our hands were touching the floor and our hands were dragged on the floor. Many guests heard the sound of “chatter” as well as breathing and whispering sounds, this is anomalous because the dry moat ground level outside the counterscarp galleries is about 15 feet below where we were stood inside and there are no animals wild or domestic in the moat. Several guests also saw something pass the windows since it was still light outside and other guests saw lights at the other end of the tunnel, no explanation could be established for either occurrence.

At the end of this séance I conducted an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiment. Unfortunately there was quite a lot of noise from the guests shuffling which when the files were analysed by our experts drowned out any spirit response because the echo in these tunnels is a lot longer than in a normal room. However the only good EVP can be heard at:-

http://youtu.be/UvrtQKX1Prw

The second group to the Counterscarp galleries I formed a séance circle in exactly the same room, hopeful that the same spirit energy would be present for the guests to experience his energy. Unfortunately he wasn’t but there was another male spirit called Bernard or Biffa to his friends present. He was from a time when the Fort was being built, about 1880, as he was a prisoner. Once I asked Biffa to move the guests in some way, lots of people arms were simultaneously moved and everyone felt a physical force push them down towards the floor. One particular guest (Chris) was pushed down with such a reasonable force that he couldn’t get up and whilst he thought it was safer to stay on the floor the spirit had other ideas. Biffa then managed to push and pull us all across the floor until Chris was pushed against a wall. I have no idea how we managed to be moved in this way and I have never seen a spirit manage to do this to people before. Once we were all against the wall Biffa then decided to twist people and bend them into what looked like impossible positions, yet we all managed to stay linked and the séance ended with us rubbing Chris’ chin which looked like a thinking man’s pose.

Just as we were about to end the séance everyone heard the sound of a whistle request that I had made earlier, they were two very distinct repeats of a whistle that I asked spirit to repeat about 20 minutes earlier.

The third group to the Counterscarps were not eager for more spiritual movement as they were the group that had the amazing activity in the Caponier, however during the séance in exactly the same room both Biffa and Captain Daniel were present and they continued moving people’s arms and pushing them. Once again we all heard the now familiar “chatter” and whisper sounds, although we still have no idea where these noises could have come from. Some odd noises were also heard coming from the moat, one of these sounded like a man groaning or cursing, however having walked the whole of the dry moat (in daylight) I know that this is very unlikely that anyone would have been in the moat as it is more or less impossible to get out especially at night where the hazards cannot be seen.

Using a spirit box (a device that scans the FM radio band in reverse at 100ms) we heard the words “Ann” “Hi” and eventually “Go”. None of the questions asked had any intelligible answer.

Moving to the other end of the Counterscarp gallery there were two Second World War soldiers present, one was Welsh and the other from Lincolnshire, neither did very much to affect the guests although Jason felt a poke in his stomach.

This was an exceptionally active ghost hunt with all guests getting some truly exciting paranormal evidence that they could not explain but nevertheless enjoyed.

The video of what happened that amazed us can be seen at http://youtu.be/b6FYM23wgJM although the report from this group is published under the Paranormal Investigators section.

Fort Borstal ghost hunt – 4-5-2013

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 4th May 2013
Rochester, Kent

We are finding that every time we investigate Fort Borstal, the activity that is experienced by the guests is getting greater and more frequent and certain rooms have certain experiences which are consistent.

This ghost hunt was one of those nights. I, as usual, had the Counterscarp Galleries as my zone for the night, as this is the most physically demanding with 200+ steps to descend and ascend.

However the walk is definitely worth it, as these counterscarp galleries are rather active and being that this area is underground it is always rather dark!

All three groups witnessed the same spirits and activity

The spirits that were present were; Captain Daniel Bedford, a soldier. Tony, a rather mean looking prisoner from when the Fort was built and his accomplice “Biffa” or Bernard, both these prisoners were in their early 30s and both were of a muscular build.

The activity of all groups in a seance usually started with some gentle arm movement and then pushing and pulling people in all manner of directions, usually in a surprising way that the guest had no idea what would be experienced next, sometimes I had an inkling what would happen to a particular person, but I too was surprised by what most of the guests experienced. This ranged from the gentle arm movement, to people be swayed and rocked, to people being pulling to the floor by their arms and in some cases dragged across the floor, those that ending up on the floor had difficulty and in some cases it was impossible to get up off the floor. Many guests reported that it felt like someone was sitting on them. There were also lots of instances of people being pushed against the walls; this was unusual because it looked very much like an execution.

Although not all the activity was extreme physical behaviour many times throughout the night, with different groups, several people arms and hands were pulled to the floor and “draw” a smiley face in the dust. Which many guests felt this was an odd thing to do.

This was an exceptionally active night, with every guest getting some form of physical paranormal activity that amazed them.

Fort Borstal ghost hunt – 30-11-2012

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

Fort Borstal ghost hunt 30th November 2012
Rochester, Kent

Fort Borstal is still new to us as this is our second investigation here, however the evidence that we encountered on our first investigation surprised us (the EVPs especially) and we were hoping that the ghost hunt would reveal more to us. We and our guests were not disappointed.

I spent most of the night in the casement galleries which turned out to be the warmest area albeit the most walking to get there.

The first session started with some KII activity and some communication via our electronic equipment but within a matter of minutes we started a séance to get the guests to sense the spirit energy that was present.

His name was Jake and he was a prisoner who had helped to build the Fort, he had short dark hair and was about 6’ tall and of a well-built stature. Although he did not look friendly he seemed a happy sort of person. Jake started by lifting the arms of some of the guests and then some light pushing sensations. Some guests were swayed and twisted.

During the séance heavy breathing, whistles, mumbling and groans were heard from further along the tunnel and since we were the only people in this area and no other group was anywhere near us these remain unexplained. Some guests also reported strange cold spots that emerged and faded around them at various intervals. The area we were in is a sealed area with no possibility for a breeze as all doors were closed and there are no holes for air from outside to come in.

We moved down to the other end of the gallery as the guests wanted to explore, whilst down here I set up a laser grid, which some guests reported seeing the lights change and flicker, two guests volunteered to investigate but came back very quickly because they heard a scream, the rest of us didn’t hear anything.

As we were leaving the area, myself and a guest who were at the back heard footsteps behind us and it sounded like someone wearing dress shoes as opposed to boots, which made everyone want to leave the area quicker!

I took the second group to the same area, as I could still sense that Jake was still around and now had the desire to manipulate the guests more forcefully.

The séance started with lots of arm movement, just about all the guests felt Jake’s energy as he lifted their arms as per the guests requests (which was certain guests asking in their heads). I noticed that there were also two other spirit energies present, both WWII Soldiers, called Dave & Justin. These two energies could obviously see what was happening, they didn’t join in but I could see them laughing at us.

As Jake got more used to moving certain guests the intensity of the movements increased with some guests being pulled downwards to the floor. There were also incidents of peoples arms being moved to stroke the stomachs and hair of other guests. Several guests were twisted and moved into very uncomfortable positions and generally tangled up with each other. Some guests were even forced to the floor and couldn’t get up.

Whilst all this was going on not many noises were heard as we were too busy laughing however just before the end of the séance we all heard a name being called out, I thought it sounded like my name spoken in a female voice. However not all guests could agree on the name spoken.

The third session was also in the same area and room as the second group as the guests wanted to experience the same types of movements.

Once again Jake was present as well as the WWII soldier Justin, once again the spirit energies started to lift the guests arms and move them according to their non-verbal instructions. There was also the same type of stroking attempted, although the guest that this was happening to didn’t like the idea and kept ducking and diving out of the way, which only increased the amount of activity as the spirit energies wouldn’t give up.

Many guests were also swayed and pushed but not quite as spectacular as the second group, this time it was more gentle and controlled.

During this séance many whistles were heard as well as other strange noises which we all heard but couldn’t decide what we were actually hearing, although the noises did sound of a metallic nature.

A couple of times Mercedes (guest) who was opposite me didn’t look well, she also complained of feeling nauseous and on both occasions I had to step out of the séance circle to help her. Both occasions after a few minutes she felt better although on the last occasion she felt drained.

After leaving the area Mercedes felt better although still quite drained.

After we finished our controlled sessions we then let the guests go back to any area they wished to try to get more activity or experience any further activity. All of the guests wanted to experience the Ouija boards again or to investigate the Officer’s Mess. No-one, least of all me, wanted to go back to the galleries, as the staircase to get to this area is a hard one to climb (approx. 130 steps) and it is a lot harder going back up!

Once again a very enjoyable ghost hunt with the level of physical activity much higher than our first investigation unfortunately this time I didn’t record any interesting EVPs or videos, but since we will be returning to this venue in 2013, there will be lots of opportunities to gather more tangible evidence.
