Deal Castle

http://www.ghosthuntevents.co.uk/deal-castle.php

History of Deal Castle
Deal Castle is an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII in Deal, Kent, between 1539 and 1540. It protected against invasion from France. The Castle comprises of a keep with six inner and outer bastions, the moated stone castle and had sixty-six firing positions for artillery.

During the Second English Civil War of 1648–49, Deal was seized by pro-Royalist insurgents and was only retaken by Parliamentary forces after several months of fighting.

Although it remained armed, Deal Castle was adapted by Sir John Norris and Lord Carrington during the 18th and 19th centuries to form a more suitable private house for the castle’s captain, which was an honorary position.

In 1904, the War Office concluded that the castle no longer had any value either as a defensive site or as a barracks and it was opened to the public when the captain was not in residence. Early in the Second World War, the captain’s quarters were destroyed by German bombing and the castle became a Battery Operating Post (one of the first-floor rooms in the keep became the Battery Office) for an artillery battery placed along the shoreline. The castle was not brought back into use as a residence and was restored by the government during the 1950s to form a tourist attraction.

Ghosts of Deal Castle
From our visits we have discovered that there are many areas of this castle which can be called haunted! Some of the rooms on the first floor have been amazing with Ouija board and Table tilting activity. The lower levels have proved interesting with various activities especially using our tech equipment and séances. On this floor people have become disorientated and “lost” because the tunnel is circular, and every bastion looks the same.

Event Showcase: The Royal Hotel

https://www.ghosthuntevents.co.uk/the-royal-hotel.php
History of The Royal Hotel
The Royal Hotel in Deal, Kent opened April 1837. Prior to this it was called the “Three Kings.” and historical records show this being open in 1750.
This 18th century Georgian hotel with it’s historical connections to Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton who were frequent visitors to this hotel, is situated on Deal’s seafront close to Deal pier and Deal castle.
Winston Churchill also stayed at The Royal Hotel when visiting Dover Castle during the Second World War.
A night porter has witnessed the ghostly figure of Lady Hamilton sitting in a corner of The Royal Hotel’s lounge, having often stayed in the hotel when visiting her beloved Admiral Nelson.
The voices and noise of children are often heard in a particular part of this hotel late at night.
Ghost Hunting
We have been investigating #RoyalHotel since 2020 and our first investigation in January 2020 we had some interesting activity. Whilst some of the guests were downstairs, there were two guests in Churchill (one of three rooms that are linked by the veranda) listening out for laughter or noises, as we had thought we heard something outside. Another team member was in the next room doing a solo vigil and had to leave the room because the kettle had turned itself on!
Our favourite areas are; The three interesting rooms; Churchill, Hamilton and Wellington plus the corridors and rooms on the 1st floor, which were good for table tilting and ouija boards.

Timeball Tower ghost hunt – 9-3-2013

The Timeball Museum ghost hunt 9th March 2013
Deal, Kent

We have held several ghost hunts at The Timeball and every time something odd or unusual has happened, on this occasion it was no different. The venue is a small venue so we don’t hold fixed groups, instead we allow all guests to wander freely and I join them frequently to see if the active spirit will do some physical to them.

The first session on the upper floor a Fisherman called Frank was present, he was aged in his 40s and whilst holding a séance he was able to gently move some people’s arms. There was also a French girl present, her name was Anne Marie and she was in her 20s & wearing a blue & white dress. She had very noticeable long brunette hair. Several of the guests reported some strange cold spots.

The second session we recorded some EVP (Electronic voice phenomena a.k.a. ghost voices) experiments, however nothing notable was heard during the analysis. Whilst asking out to spirit to make some noise we all heard some gently tapping on the floor and on the table. This tapping could not be another person since the whole group were in this room at the time. We were joined by a male spirit called Daniel who was aged in his early 50s. Daniel was a very camp character and generally rather playful and sarcastic in his responses. Daniel was quite a tall slim man but had a “professor” looking hairstyle which reminded me of typical 1970s hair styles.

After this session we tried to do some scrying in one of the middle floor rooms. An older gent who was approximately in his 80s with a small face was trying to superimpose his features over a guest, but unfortunately the guest could not see it. There was also a female energy present called Maddie and was dressed in typical 1950s attire and she wore a yellow & red flower summer dress, but once again the same guest could not see any change.

The fourth session we tried some table tilting, well actually the female members of the team and guests tried table tilting with little response. There were three spirit energies present; Elisa, aged in her mid-50s who was a working girl, Jenny, a young 15 year old watched over by her father (who I couldn’t see clearly) and Daniel (the character we met in an earlier session) however the spirit Daniel suggested to me that if the men were on the table he would move it, so three of us placed our hands on the table. I was not expecting much because I don’t have a lot of luck when it comes to table movements and generally it doesn’t work for me. However to my surprise the table gently glided across the floorboards making no noise in an anti-clockwise direction and then abruptly rocked and moved in a more determined motion, all without making a sound. When asking whether the table could be moved in the other direction (clockwise) the table only rocked. After we finished with the table as no more movements were felt several of the men reported being touched in strange places, namely all below the waist, which was very likely of Daniel as he was that way inclined!

Using the Ovilus (a device that converts EMF pulses into words) several words were heard by everybody although there were no “stand out” moments. We tried some glass movements on a table and once again this only worked for the men twisting violently and the majority of the time the glass travelled two thirds over the edge of the table. Many shapes and numbers were “drawn” on command plus some other random movements.

The final session was another EVP session in one of the quieter rooms. There were several responses to the guests questions, however only one was clearly audible and that can be heard at

Once again a very enjoyable ghost hunt which had many memorable moments for some. We will be returning to this venue later in the year.

Timeball Tower Museum ghost hunt – 23-6-2012

Timeball Tower Museum ghost hunt – 23rd June 2012

Due to the size of this venue I conducted the welcome briefing outside the Tower before anyone entered the building and told everyone of the experiences that the custodians of the building have witnessed for themselves as well as what happened on our first visit to this venue back in January 2012.

This is one of the rare venues that we have a very limited amount of people that we can bring into the Museum and therefore we generally allowed everyone to wander from room to room to conduct their own investigations throughout the night, watched over by the Ghost Hunt Events team. We also conducted several experiments on different levels of the building and guests were free to watch or join in with these vigils and experiments.

Every room we had investigative kit that guests could use as well as a Ouija table set up in the “Clock Room”. Given that this is a museum about time, there were many clocks throughout the building which ticked and tocked, some very loudly that the guests commented that it sounded similar to a dog barking.

The investigation started with people complaining of kidney and back pains as well as a team member having acquired a headache and had to leave the building to recover. Various EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiments took place over the entire evening and many EVPs were recorded by our team as well as some guests who had their own equipment. Many of these are still being analysed as we can hear words being spoken by spirit but cannot fathom the exact words.

During a vigil in the “Television” room two guests repeatedly reported feeling cold spots throughout their body and feeling disorientated and nauseous.

Various knocks and tapping were heard both in rooms and on the staircase, these were not in response to the clocks ticking as we used some relatively new equipment so that we could see the noise. This equipment detects sounds and then displays a light or lights to indicate the loudness of the sound. The noises which were heard in the Television room were reported to be metallic and in the absence of a heating system no obvious source could be found.

KII activity was reported in the uppermost room which on a previous visit we experienced the same phenomena. Our KII meters were picking up very high levels of EMF in the middles of the windows. Normally we can attribute high reading with power cables, but there aren’t any across these windows and thus this is still very much unexplained.

During a very active Ouija session where a male energy who would not give his name, but had visited us just to communicate with us gave us some remarkable answers to our questions including some very personal answer to the people present which simply amazed them. At one point we asked what was the collective age of everyone in the room and the spirit immediately answered with 323, it then took us several minutes to add up all of our collective ages since none of us present are good with maths. The correct answer was 332, but at the time we noted that spirit were correct because we could not be sure that we identified the initial numbers correctly. We then asked immediately what was the time to the spirit and the answer came back as 11:37, once again it took us a moment or two to see the time as we were operating in virtual darkness and no-one was wearing a watch. The spirit was spot on though. Everyone who was present were suitably amazed.

Towards the end of the evening we conducted a dual Spirit box experiment, two spirit boxes were run at the same speed (in reverse) to see if we heard a response on one did we hear it on the other. What was strange is that the two spirit boxes (which were identical) did not stay the same frequency apart during the experiment, with one box running behind the other and then catching up and finally overtaking the other. Whether this is normal or not we don’t know but it reminded me of the metronome synchronisation experiment, which is a known interference stabilisation method, once used in Cathode Ray Tubes (Old style televisions) to keep the picture in place.

When asking the spirit for the colour of the sky, Yellow and Red were heard by everyone present as well as the word rainbow and Saturday. However not all responses were heard on both devices and this is an experiment which we will conduct in the future possibly with three or more spirit boxes.

Once again a very enjoyable ghost hunt in which all guests enjoyed themselves and quite a lot of evidence was recorded (and is still being analysed). Generally this was a good ghost hunt for audible noises and inexplicable occurrences as well as two exceptional Ouija board sessions.

Joining me were;
Sean McMillan – Paranormal Investigator,
Kym McMillan – Paranormal Investigator,
Carl Hutchinson – Paranormal Investigator &
Marc Weston – Paranormal Investigator

Timeball Tower Museum, Deal ghost hunt – 27-1-2012

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

The Timeball Tower Museum Private Ghost Hunt 27th January 2012

The Timeball Tower which is in Deal, Kent is a little gem of a building. Tucked away in this part of Kent, no-one would know how important this building once was. For those who don’t know, the Timeball was dropped at 1.00pm everyday so that maritime people would know the time. The signal for this came from Greenwich via the telegraph system.

The Timeball Tower then is all about time and the measurement of it, which for our purposes means that it is not a quiet building as there are clocks on every floor, some gently ticking, while others loudly clanking away. However this did not stop us enjoying the evening as this was a private event, the majority of the people knew about the Timeball Tower.

We started on the top floor and like many venues that have not had paranormal investigations held in them before, it took a while for the spirit energies to realise what was happening and to interact with us. Our EMF meters showed a small building up of energy surrounding the mechanism of the timeball and after about twenty minutes we were getting strong pulses and our dialogue equipment was also picking up spirit energies.

From the dialogue meters we established there was a female energy called Annabelle who was aged in her early 20s, smartly dressed and used to work in the building in 1908. She seemed a shy girl but after a while she began to “talk” and it transpired that she was either pushed or fell from the roof of the building. What she was doing on the roof remains a mystery.

A second energy was also communicating via the dialogue meter, his name was Gordon and he was a well-built man, about 5’10” in height. Aged in his mid-50s and dressed in Navy uniform and wore a navy coloured peaked flat cap. He gave me the impression that he was from 1870s.

Throughout this session we could all hear various noises on the floor below, but there were no clocks on that floor that were that noisy. A guest volunteered to go down to the floor below, but as soon as they left us those loud noises ceased.

After a short break we resumed the investigation on the top floor and I set up the laser grid to see if the energies that were present could manifest themselves somehow. Although nothing noteable happened at first some guests could see lights and orbs within this grid, according to the guests the lights were white and red in colour, whereas the laser light was green.

During my whistle experiment a whistle was heard a few people but unfortunately not recorded on our audio recorders, although it may have been recorded via our video cameras, but the footage is still being analysed for anomalies.

Once again, whilst we were all on this floor many loud noises were heard on the floor below but as soon as someone went down to listen to them, the noises stopped.

The majority of the group made their way down to the second floor, as it was relatively cold on the top floor (there was no heating in this building) but I and another guest stayed behind to do some EVP experiments. From the recordings there were two EVPs recorded. http://youtu.be/HkC04pK4uOg
http://youtu.be/330CgH0_WQY

After the EVP recording session, I joined the rest of the group on the second floor and we attempted some scrying using the screen of a TV, all those who took part saw their features change as many different energies participated. Some of the guests found this to be a frightening experience!

Our final session we decided to hold a Ouija board session, which meant carrying a table from the ground floor to the top (only when we finished, did we notice the legs were detachable!)

The first energy who presented themselves on the Ouija board didn’t actually want to communicate with us, nor could they spell, so after about 20 minutes and very little activity a “proper” energy started to move the planchette. This spirit was called Andrew Dafny, aged 35 and from 1648 and was a Burmese citizen who belonged to some religious order, but one he would not divulge. I asked whether he came here specifically to communicate with us, as his actions on the board we precise and he knew to return to the centre of the board after answering a question. He said Yes. This raised lots of questions from the guests, all of which were answered by Andrew.

This was a great venue; all the guests thoroughly enjoyed themselves since this was the first time that they had attended a paranormal night. Considering the ticking of the clocks the EVPs are some of the clearest we have recorded.

I would like to thank the Trustees of the Timeball Tower Museum for allowing us to conduct ghost hunts at The Timeball Tower Museum.

This venue is available for private ghost hunts, see http://www.ghosthuntevents.co.uk for more details.

Deal Rifle club ghost hunt – 27-8-2011

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Deal Rifle Club ghost hunt – 27-8-2011
When I was approached by a member of this club to “have a look” I wasn’t expecting much, because of the nature of the place (they shoot guns) I wasn’t expecting spirit to be very active. I was wrong, this is an active place and we certainly were not disappointed throughout the investigation.
This venue is probably the smallest I have ever investigated, basically there are two rooms. The club room for teas and coffees and the shooting lanes. The rifle range room is 25 yards long, so there was space. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I certainly did not expect to have the activity that occurred.
We started with a séance in the rifle range, I became aware of a young male energy who was dressed as a WWII soldier although his uniform looked different from UK soldiers and when he gave me his name it became apparent that his was Swedish, unfortunately I cannot remember who to spell his name it was quite long and unpronounceable in English. The soldier was about 5’6” in height and he started moving the hands of Justine, me and Christine. At the same time Andy was also being moved gently.
Lynn picked up on another male energy, he was in his early 60s and I could see him dressed in a plain blue boiler suit, Lynn got the name Bert. Bert started by gently moving the arms of John & Lynn. Whilst this was happening Justine and myself heard what sounded like footsteps, at one point we heard a metal clank and then about 7-10 footsteps. Everyone heard this and John asked whether we had shut the outside door, because it sounded like someone had entered the building and walked down the passageway. (Which was adjacent to the room we occupied)
We asked if it were Bert who was making the noise (1 tap for no, 2 taps for yes) and we all heard two taps. Lynn asked many more times for Bert to tap, which he did, some were more audible than others, but generally everyone heard those taps. During this I (and others) heard metal sounding taps coming from the far end of the room. The pellet collectors and baffles were metal, however we could not establish what was making these noises at the time because of the noises which were coming from the wall that separates the corridor and the rifle range.
Whilst all this was going on some of the guests were more vocal than others and I had noticed that Marc who would usually have said something, especially about the noises, remained very silent. After asking him if he was OK for about the third time and having no response I decided that he may have been in trouble, so I proceeded to stand behind him holding the arms of the people who were next to him, thus placing him effectively in the middle of the circle. Marc then immediately stated that he was OK. However afterwards he explained to me that although he was aware of what was going on he could not respond at the time, he also felt that his chest was tightening from the back and his legs had just locked up. Below is how Marc described the feeling in his own words.
“I felt as if the whole of my back, shoulders, neck, head and legs were being “forcibly pressured” horizontally and downwards from my shoulders, whilst experiencing a strange tingling sensation’ likened only to a mass pins and needles effect, in all of the aforementioned areas, almost rendering me paralysed! I felt cold and squeezed and experienced the sensation of a difficulty in breathing. At the point I realised you were standing behind me, forcibly parting my hands from those of my neighbours in the closed circle,I began to recover my senses and total awareness of my surroundings. I felt the presence of a female, nothing malevolent or oppressive, who sought merely to experience the sensations of my physical being. I have encountered this once before but with slightly different results and it was a male entity on that occasion. I have suffered no after effects whatsoever.”
Many guests experienced cold spots, the room was effectively sealed against drafts. It was the amount and volume of the tapping however that made all of us generally speechless, because at first these sounded distant, no-one could be sure which direction they were coming from. But as the taps became louder they seem to originate from the separating wall.
I asked Bert (the spirit) to tap twice in quick succession and then we would leave him alone and take a break. Almost instantly we all heard two very loud taps.

After a coffee break, we all assembled back in the rifle range, although I wasn’t expecting spirit to top the experience, but nevertheless we tried various experiments. I had set up my laser grid, in the hope that if spirit could walk in the room the laser light would be affected and I had placed my two EMF (Electromagnetic Force) Metres at the lower end of the room. Marc also had his EMF closer to the shooting area. Just after setting up the laser grid the laser seemed to twinkle, it isn’t supposed to do this, although looking at a laser is not a good idea, but it seemed as if the laser light was fluctuating, which it shouldn’t because the batteries were new and no one was holding the device.
A female energy had joined the group and the group were generally asking questions and getting some responses, but nothing like what happened in the first session. However Marc threw some of his flashing LED balls in the hope that spirit would throw them back. But as Marc and I became aware that where the pellet collectors were situated was generally where we were hearing some odd tapping sounds. When Marc and I were standing close to the baffles we both heard many taps, although later Sean came down to the same area and he noted that it sounded like the plastic lights. I however still believe that some of the noises were the lights but some were definitely metallic in nature. Since Sean was filming and I was recording with my audio recorder I am hoping that I can isolate and compare the two noises to see if the early sounds were those of the lights or metal. What I don’t really understand is why the lights would be making a noise (like cooling down) because they were not turned on all evening.
Marc recorded that there was quite a large temperature difference between the two ends of the room. Where we were hearing noises was 16 degrees Celsius and a few minutes prior to this activity the temperature was 19.3 degrees Celsius. There was no obvious reason for this sudden drop in temperature.
After this some people tried using a Ouija board with some mixed results and I was using a writing planchette. We had a female energy come through who couldn’t spell or write, but she could draw, through some careful question asking I managed to ascertain that she passed in 1749 and was killed at 37 years old due to her own brother, she was married with children. She was able to draw squares, circles and basic shapes and when each one of us on the board imagined or drew a shape that the others could not see the spirit responded by repeating the shape on the paper.
All in all this was a surprisingly good ghost hunt with hopefully some useful evidence captured (the camera footage & EVP recordings have not yet been fully analysed). But one which would be good to repeat just to see if the tapping sounds occurred again.
